Indeed. Nolan wanted it to happen, and he wanted it to happen for real. Fortunately, nathan Crowley and Chris Corbould - the production designer and special effects co-ordinator - are two of the best in the business at what they do, so they constructed the biggest nitrogen propellant canister ever used for a film (which is basically an enormous metal piston fired out of a cannon by pressurised nitrogen), and placed it in the back of the semi-trailer. The stunt was complicated by the fact that the street actually had dozens of bank vaults underneath it, which meant that there were only two points on the entire street where the canister could be fired. Anywhere else, and the force of the canister firing would have blown a hole in the street; that's how much force was exerted. The piston that was fired out of the canister was digitally removed in post-production, though the trail of nitrogen vapour was left in. They got it in one take.Always wondered about that... Epic scene!!
