Ham Radios...

Aren't they cool? HAM Radios I mean. I have a friend who has one and uses it a lot...anyone got any ideas where I could get one cheap? Does anyone even know what a HAM radio is here? Or are you all stuck on just cars?

A HAM Radio is actually a radio that was used duing like ww1 and 2 and stuff. It's made on a lower (?) frequency I think. Loads of people use them..basically to talk to other people way across the country.

I don't know that much about cars either, so i'm thicker than a mile of solid concrete.

Think audio only, primitive internet.

When I was at high school many years ago a guy actually built his own FM broadcast aerial and used to send out short little tranmissions. He didn't have a whole lot of power so it was pretty short range. Pretty funny, too, when you find out just how illegal it is do that.

This thread is absurd.

Cobraking - he's not even a teenager yet, no surprise - doesn't know what amateur/ham radio is. You can't really expect him to, it's decently obsolete in this generation, and there rarely (I can think of a few) any references to it in normal life.

But then it's explained to him - by somebody clearly as equally inept - as:

A HAM Radio is actually a radio that was used duing like ww1 and 2 and stuff.

Am I expecting too much? I like the first part of that:

A HAM Radio is actually a radio

Whoa! No kidding?

Am I right in saying the film 'Frequency' used one?

Couldn't comment on that, but anyone who's seen the beginning of "Contact" should know what a HAM Radio is.

Vat_Man: At boarding school a friend and I built an FM transmitter, which was, off a 9v battery, powerful enough to burn out a major national radio station within the radius of our boarding house. We ran our own pirate station on Radio 1's frequency for about three nights. Then we got bored.

Alright, now that at least some of you know what HAM radio is, how about info on getting a licence?

Google.com is your best friend.

There is a HAM Radio community distributed all over the world. From what I gather the attraction is being able to talk to people not only on the other side of your country but the other side of the planet. All sorts of variables come into play and sometimes they work better than others. I guess there's clubs and they keep track of all the places they've talked to, like a status symbol in their world.

I'd think a site like this would be the perfect place to bring up something so incredibly nerdy. It's just a hobby. Most hobbies are useless in any practical sense but at least HAM Radio has a potential for usefulness.

And you get those cool special license plates.

Low frequencies, correct

And people use them to talk to people around the world, not just across the country. My uncle has/had(don't know which it is now) one, and he could communicate with people in Germany or something from in the middle of Wisconsin.

yes, aren't those licence plates with VE3XXX on them or whatever? i've never really been into radio or communications so i don't know much about ham (or HAM?) radios.

as for pop culture, patty and/or selma had a HAM radio in one episode of the simpsons.
