Just a quick question.. How does this work?

Just thought I'd ask as it was a bit of a  moment for me. I was doing my usual of looking up locked threads for some amusement. :dopey:

I have a screencap of a time when my profile said:
BigMackAttack is currently- Moderating
When I saw it I was all like WTF
Ill post it tommorow

Banned users can view the forums, but cannot post. Hence the "Online Now" status.

Is this being said from experience? :dopey::lol: But, makes sense, I assumed if you were banned that you wouldn't be able to log in.

Nope, I have 0 infractions.

You are allowed to log in to see your PM's, mainly the one from the moderator that banned you, telling you why you were banned.

I remember Jordan saying it a month or so back.

Oh yeah.. Never really thought about the fact they'd need to see the pm as to why they were banned!

That happens when you have been deleting profile messages.;)

Also, banned users sometimes log in from other devices, such as mobile browsers, thus having a different IP address.

That doesn't work. If the account is banned, it is banned.

OK, not sure what I was seeing last night then. Maybe I interpretted it incorrectly.

Unless the user logged in via a mobile device, a) to see if that would circumvent the ban (clearly not) and b) to read the PM, as above, to see why he'd been banned.

Do temporary bans (days/weeks) differ at all to permanent bans other than in length of time?

It could have been that the interval between the user being banned and you noticing it was quite short. I think that the online status is not updated in real time. The user's session could still be active even though their rights have been taken away.

Also, when users visit pages to which they do not have access, the "who's online" page will show them as viewing that page, even though they're seeing an "access denied" message.

Said person, according to the BUL, was banned 3 days ago and read the PM regarding the ban then. And yes, they were online yesterday but are not able to post, as has been previously mentioned.

We're talking about two different users as I was initially referring to a ban actioned only yesterday. However I do know who else you're referring to and am grateful for the info 👍

The ban prevents the user from doing anything on the threads I was led to believe. They can still be online, but there is nothing to access while they are here. Maybe they just kept hitting the refresh button just to see if something changed.
