I'm planning to build my own computer for the first time and I'm wondering if the space of the hard drive depends on what motherboard you use. I'm planning to use a 2 TB hard drive.

Provided you're using modern parts and not old, outdated bits and pieces, the only correlation between the motherboard and the hard drive would be read speed. Make sure both items support SATA3 for the best speed/performance.

Good luck with the build. 👍

If you buy a 2TB hard drive, it has a capacity of 2TB (for some definition of "2TB" :D) regardless of what motherboard it's connected to.

Bear in mind though, that because of the way windows formats the drive it will only show up as 1.81 TB in my computer, don't go thinking there's something wrong with it, its normal.

Technically, the hard drive of 2TB is actually 2TiB by the manufacturers and marketing men of that manufacturer. That being terabits, not terabytes.

There are 8 bits to 1 byte.

So this is why you "lose" so many bytes.

Curse those marketing people.
