Hardware problems with GT4

Hey I just got a Japanese slim PS2 yesterday and GT4.

However during the races the screen seems to "tear apart"

It seems like every other line of pixels is missing, or misplaced. It only happens during the races and not in the menus.

I have it connected through component cables playing in 480i. I hooked up my original video cables and samething happens.

Also I hooked up the PS2 to my surround system with an optical cable but after the intro when it goes directly into the GT map all I get is white noise. This does not happen all the time, it happened twice so far.

Anyone got similar problems?

Mmm.
I got my slim ps2 today and GT4,

sometimes the laptimes look a bit misplaced (interlaced?) or something.
I'm now reading the threads about what kind of cable to use etc, that should fix it.
It's not that the game is not playable

good luck

Happens on my chipped UK PS2 (30003) and Chinese import with Toshiba widescreen TV. Also used to happen on my Chinese copy of Prologue. It basically looks like the interlacing gets messed up and the 2 lines overlap. Wierd.

It's believed to be a bug as it happens to everyone no matter the PS2 version or video mode/connection. It's got nothing to do with cables and stuff. It's also mentioned in every review I have read so far, so, live with it.

If it happens mid-race, which is quite rare, a quick tap on the 'look behind' button instantly fixes it.

There have been a lot of issues with the new slim PS2, thats part the reason i have yet to buy one. Even though my old Phase 1 PS2 is starting to have problems loading. The new PS2 apparently suffers quite badly from overheating which can cause the screen tearing you have mentioned. I have read of many people who are not happy with the new PS2 mainly due to this overheating which is really bad on GTA:SA for some reason & has been several consoles fail completely.

Yeah hapens to me too, it only happens during the race or during the replay that the screen shakes for like 2 to 5 seconds its really weird, I thought that it was my tv or my PS2 but the PS2 specialist who installed my modchip says its a bug of GT4 and not of my system or Tv cause it only happens with GT4 and not with other game or DVD

Does this seem to happen only on the "slimline" PSTwo or does it happen on all PS2's?

It does sound more like a hardware problem than a software problem.. the field order is being reversed for some reason.

Nope, I remember it happaning to the UK and US versions of GT3 UK version of Concept, the Japanese/UK versions of Prologue and how Japanese version of GT4, it only ever happened in GT3 a couple of rare times, but it did, I've always thought it was just the PS2 having trouble loading the graphics and just stuttering a bit???

I have a V.7 US ps2 modded with a magic 3.1+ and chinese copy of GT4 and I have this same problem. It really doesnt bother me, but it is noticeable.

yeah i was going to trade in my old ps2 for a slimline one but was told the new ones overheat easily because they have no fan inside,it mainly happens when you play GTA:SA i was told

How many of those versions are being played with a modchip? Could it be the chip that's causing it?

I've never seen it in GT3, and my PS2 is stock, so I can't play any other versions on it.

Also, what kind of TV are people noticing this on? Normal TV's, or HD sets?

Actually, I think that's something different.. GTA:SA is a dual-layer disc that's constantly spooling from the disc as you play the game. So that laser gets a hell of a workout.

The fan in the PS2 is there primarily to keep the power supply cool (like that big honking fan on the back of every PC, right next to the main power switch). Since the PSTwo's power supply is external, it doesn't need it anymore. The rest of the components really don't get that hot. Certainly it's well within their tolerance.

The new slim PStwo does have a fan internally... Look up internal photos of this to confirm.

If you are having problems with overheating, try using the vertical stand and put it in a cooler place.

also happens in the demos, the wierd thing is that when i started using comnponent cables, the problem was minimized to a point it bearly happened, and i'm pretty sure about this.

Component cables indicate you're using it on an HDTV... can anyone say whether this effect happens on a normal NTSC-resolution CRT television?

The reason I ask is that the signal from the PS2 is interlaced. Any digital television is going to have a hard time with this, since interlaced signals are specifically designed for standard televisions. What you're seeing are the individual fields of the interlaced signal, which is usually 100% invisible on a standard television, except in rare cases where the field order is reversed.

Wait a second, can everyone chill, collect their issues and in a clear and precise, perhaps more visual way so that us less technical people will understand, describe exactly what the problem is. I gather the screen fractures of becomes distorted? can someone explain the problem properly and perhaps post a screenshot?

cheers

the HDTV i'm using my PS2 on is a direct view CRT, wich does 480i native, just like a regular non HDTV CRT direct view set, and no, it's not just the fields, i mean, you do see the fields, but in a way that it seems like slowdown, not TV related in anyway (doesn't always happen, but when it does it looks ugly)

The shaking of the screen also happens when, in the Japanese Demo, you choose the tires of the Mazda RX8.....just starts to shake for at least 10-20 sec.....

To mention is that I have a PAL PS2 with Matrix Infinity and the NTCS-J GT4 Demo......

I saw this the first time with the chinese GT4P, it happend in the menu screen once in a while.

It also happens with the latest GT4 Japanese demo. but then it happend during replays, on the Nordschleife coming out of Hocheichen, it looks as if the framerate is dropping, also if you zoom in it happens often.

(Ive a Pal PS2 with messiah chip)

To me it seems to happen when there is a lot being displayed on the screen, for example at the start of a race where all 6 cars are in view. Perhaps the ps2 is having trouble rendering gt4 at full load.

So it's a fact now, the games on the PS2 are too advanced for the machine to handle, in some cases anyway.
I really hopes that Sony announces PS3 soon because the PS2's time is running out fast,

I don't have GT4 yet (waiting for the US version), but I do have the slim PS2. I play GT3 and Driv3r all the time. Last night I played GT3 for over 5 hours with no problems. The only problem I ever had was the PS2 locking up when I play Driv3r. I hope I don't have any problems when I get GT4...

it has happened to me too, it happens mostly right before race starts and the screen shakes for a few seconds, and some replays with many cars
i think its normal, maybe just a glitch or the ps2 can't handle it?

i have a slim ps2 with magic kx and Japanese GT4 with sanyo tv
also did it on my friends moded ver3 ps2 and his Japanese ver3 ps2 with toshiba tv
