Maybe, but what's the bigger picture?

In this case, the bigger picture is that Rowling thought the similarities so marked that she sued Gaiman for breach of copyright. Gaiman then handily counterclaimed with the quite valid point that he published 10 years earlier.

After Warner, Rowling's cinematic partners, bought the film rights for Gaiman's stories for a cool million, the cases were dropped.

We could just buy one copy but I don't want to wait til she finishes reading it which will take about 2 weeks for her.
Two bookmarks. An extra bookmark will cost you about 2% of the cost of a second book. Maybe 3% if you get the kind that hook on the page (my personal preference) so that it won't fall out when the other is reading.

Does that explain that horrid, unadvertised, underbudgeted, piece of crap that was on Sci-fi a few years back?

Bookmark will be pointless as once I start reading I won't put it down til I am done. Plus I don't want her giving away the ending to me, where as I will have great pleasure in teasing her because I will know first. And apparently Jack is ordering in pizza all weekend.

This books already been ruined for me. Somebody sent me scans of the pages with bullet points of what happens at the top of the E-mail. I'll still read the book though.

I'm just hoping what I read is not genuine.

WARNING! The following link contains the summary of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. So big spoilers.
The summary of book 7 is located here. (You really don't want to go here if you're planning on reading the book.)

Lol, i actually never read a harry potter book (nor lotr for that matter).
If they make a film about it, i'll pass on the book.
(I actually only saw like the first 2 harry potter movies, still have to watch the other ones)

Let me be the first to say that the books are 10 times better than the movies...

... that's saying something about the movies.

The only people who don't know this to be the case in general never read. I have seen relatively good movies and then gone out and bought the book because of it.

Or, as is the case with Harry Potter, when they are making a movie that has a lot of buzz because of the book I go read the book first.

There's actually reports Rowling had dummy copies created - whether by ghost writer or otherswise; we're not sure - and deliberately circled them into production early on so that the first leaks are actually fakes. I haven't seen any of these so-called genuine spoilers (though many people on another foum I know of deliberately try to ruin it for fun), but I do know that there's at least three different versions of the book aside from the real one that have been printed. The only "spoiler" I've seen in the one on YTMND, but it's clearly fake.

I actually do read books (although it has been a while, have to pick that up again)
Harry Potter isn't really my taste of books. And if i see the movie first, i never read the book after, because i want to visualize the story in my mind, and if you saw the movie, that vision already has been created.
My favorite type of book is one about ancient warfare, or something that has to do with it.
My favorite book is one about the youth of Hannibal.

I'm not attacking Rowling. I'm just saying that people think Harry Potter is so wonderful and original when they are oblivious to what so similar literature preceded it.

Ok, fair enough. You can make it your mission to educate these people. Tell them all about Earthsea. I remember watching a TV show called The Worst Witch years ago, I never put two and two together, but apparently thats also a book series Rowling has been accused of plaigarising. Again, they're similar, but not similar enough until you start nit-picking. But feel free to tell them about that too.

Anyways, you have the same birthday as me, Omnis, so I've decided even though I thought you were annoying yesterday, today you're awesome.

And Harry Potter 5 is the best movie so far. Matt thought so too :)

Yay. Yet more plagiarised nonsense masquerading as literature.

Honestly, people, read The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin. If Harry doesn't turn out to be the result of a spell by Voldemort to rid him of the good parts of himself (or some similar theme) I'll be very surprised.

If I can muster up enough care.

Too bad all it ever warranted is a Hallmark production. Seriously deserved more than that. I feel that WOE is more mature than HaPo. The charm of the Potter series is that it starts and stays at such a low level for a while. A place where kids can jump into fantasy. Then, after a while, it builds up to the pre-teen, then, eventually, the teen level.

There are some problems with the books, but generally, they're entertaining, and, on the whole, child safe. HaPo became popular simply because it's a child-safe, generally acceptable form of fantasy that's about as far removed from hardcore fantasy as possible.

Having read them, I can't say they're the best fantasy I've ever read. But they're not bad, either... just a bit shallow... and even by book number six, still canted a bit towards the pre-teen / teen market.

She seriously sued Neil Gaiman? The man could write rings around her... d'oh! :ouch:

Considering i read book 6 by the end of the day i bought it. I expect to have read book 7 in the same day also. Pick it up about 9am and probably have it done and dusted by dinner. Currently 240 pages into book 6, will have that knocked over before i get 7. All the events fresh in my mind. Looking forward to closure after being involved in the series for about 6 years.

So, in other words:
just a bit shallow...
I always thought it was a good story, but poorly written on a low level that makes it so anyone can read it. I just kind of coast through and then I'm finished. It is just slightly below Clive Cussler style, although I prefer his stories.

In general I prefer my books to make me think more or to at least not find myself able to guess what is going to happen next. A perfect example of what I like is Orson Scott Card's Ender/Shadow series.

Of course, I'm the same guy that left a library sale ($.50 a book) with three boxes of books. I would have bought more but I showed up on the last day so my choices were limited.

Now I believe in wizards and witches. I believe in magic, casting spells, and all that sort of stuff. That's not my problem with Harry Potter.

What I don't believe, is that a red-haired kid with freckles has 2 friends.

I should have spoilered this whole thread 3 days ago to prevent argument about Harry Potter, where it has Wizards and Magic, If I were some dude living in the middle ages I would sue all of you.

That is all.

Finished...

Well what a story..

Will not discuss anything yet, i dont want to spoil anybodys read, however if anyone else whos finished wants to share some thoughts, send a PM.

Just finished a short while ago. I agree with SF... what a story.

Only a few places where it got bogged down, but only for a page or two so it wasn't too bad struggling through.

Overall, a good finish to a well-above average series. Definitely worth the read.

Just started reading it -Really enjoying it so far, to the extent of it taking preference over WRS. Got as far as the demise of..................

nige

As I posted in the Dork thread, I just went to Target about half an hour ago, the new book is $18 and they have literally hundreds of them sitting on a trolley.

I got one for the hell of it. As soon as I'm done with Going Faster, I'll give it a try.

You know, I hate and love Wikipedia.

I hate it because it told me the ending, but I love it because it just saved me 700+ pages of something I felt I've read before in previous installments....

Ditto that. I read the first 4 books, started on the 5th but ran out of bothered when I realised the book was thicker than my PS2... Just read the Wiki page on the Deathly Hallows, and read all I needed to know in 10 minutes. Excellent.

Heh, I never even thought about that! Looks like I'll be catching up on Books 6 & 7 and save me time and money.

I finished it just now. It was definately the best in the series  Riveting, really.

I have got just over 100 pages to go and I really can't afford to stay up late reading. It's all Jacks fault, if he hadnt stayed up with his friends til 5am Saturday morning I might have got an ealier start yesterday.

Can someone please explain to me why exactly Harry is the true
master of the Elder Wand? I thought since Snape killed Dumbledore and Voldemort killed Snape, he should be the master. Of course, then Harry kills Voldemort, but he says something about how Snape was never the master because Dumbledore's death was planned.

I think it's because the power can't be passed through a planned death and since snape and dumbeldore planned the killing, the power wasn't passed to snape. Since Malfoy was the person that was supposed to kill Dumbeldore, he unknowingly got ownership of the wand. Since Harry stole Malfoy's wand, Harry got the power from it, or that's what I interpreted
