Hey folks,

I moved my rSeat/CSR cockpit out of the living room and into my office/listening room. I thought about getting a surround sound speaker setup, but I think it might be overkill (lawlz). Instead, I was wondering what you guys recommend for a...more quiet setup. I picked up a Turtle Beach DSS 7.1 processer (meh) and a Plantronics GAMECOM 377 earlier this morning, but I'm not sure if I like it. I would've bought a Turtle Beach headset, but they all looked a bit chincy. I might return the DSS as there is a new DSS2 that is 10 bucks cheaper and has different virtual speaker modes. Hell, I might return both headset and DSS for and order an Astro A40 setup (yowzer!). What do you guys think? Also, I'm completely deaf in my right ear, so I feel like I should get a 50% discount on some of these things. Hah.

In addition to the headphones, I'm leaning towards a Buttkicker Gamer 2 when they are back in stock. I was thinking of gettin Aura Pro Bass Shakers, but I'd still have to get an amp for them...no?

You are correct on the Aura's. Treat them as a regular set of speakers when defining equipment needed. As for headphones I'm currently trying Tritton AX Pro's and I don't find them that bad (as some reviews suggest). One thing about them is they require more setup than every other headset as you have to set up the levels on the 5.1 because there are actually 4 speakers per ear. I have another few days left with them, I'll try to do some serious listening and see if they are golden or not.

I have the trittons also. Have had them about 8 months and love them. Have had no issues and they sound great. Wasnt sure about surround sound with headphones, but I must say in very impressed. You can really hear where things are around you. 👍

modded Senn 555's

cheap as chips, 595 level after mod.

EDIT: ANYTHING that is advertised as "GAMER" is crap. Trust me on this one. I had a X41 and that thing sounded tinny and ate batteries like nothing. Just get yourself a nice pair of studio 2.0 phones. AT AD700's are good.

A good pair of headphones are the way to go. It's far better than surround sound speakers IMO and far cheaper too. :)

My headphones agree. Right side broke free from a minor drop (thank you Mr cat). They are difficult to fix as well. A little unceremonious gaffers tape and I am still using them even though the ear pads are not quite in the right alignment.

The separate chat & game sound controls are very welcome as well as the mic mute. Sounds quality is perfectly adequate for gaming imho.

I'd have to disagree with the above statement, the Turtle Beach PX5 headphones were designed for PS3 and XBOX 360 gaming and IMHO are fantastic for gaming as well as watching movies or listening to music.

Did you even read my post? PX5 = X41 w/ PS3 compatibility

Anyways, I'm an audiophile and I guess thats why I thought they sounded tinny.

Take the Astro A40's for example, the phone itself is terrible for gaming (ie: small soundstage, bass is not precise), but the mixamp that is included is a serious piece of kit.

I was thinking of just getting the Mix Amp at 130 bucks. What do you think?

Astros are amazing, the sound quality is outstanding. I heard things in games and music I had never picked up before but I would suggest the a30s. The a40 are open backed cups so you can here the outside world. A30 are closed back have much better bass and block out any out side sounds ( like the wife )

Daz

A use my a40s for cod buh when a do suffule races a like usein the a40's to hear the diffence in cars spesho American muscle cars the deep roar of the engine sounds so good with the bass on

I've owned all the current headphones and the Astros are easily the best, both in sound and quality and presentation. I have both the wired and wireless. Get them you won't regret it.

For comfort and good sound decent stereo phones have advantages.
Personally for me I found most "multichannel gamer" headphones lack in comfort build and general performance. Yet can in games offer a soundstage that's exciting.

I'm happy with my HD600 although the best surround sound headphones I've owned are Sony Japan only models (available to import) Sonys S7000 7.1 wireless series. Great performance, unique (Virtualphones Technology) though no mic. Sony were the first to offer surround sound headphones many moons ago and their latest models in the SONY MDR-DS7500 Wireless offer full lossless audio direct input via HDMI transmitter.

Effect mode: OFF / Cinema / Game / Voice (Stereo)

Decoder: Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES, DTS, DTS Neo: 6, MPEG-2 AAC , LPCM 2ch/5.1ch/7.1ch, Dolby Pro Logic IIz

I think these would be amongst the best surround models available, if you Anyones got the cash. Their even designed to be worn with 3D glasses.

Latte, the a40 headphones are the most comfortable headphones I've owned, and I own several including high end cans. For the price of the A40 package, it's a quality kit with many uses. Supremely comfortable for hours of use on end. I'm sure the Sony's are awesome.

As I have quoted myself.

As for the newest Sony 7500. If wireless surround is wanted these are amongst the best but many folk will not want £340 gaming headphones.

The only experience I have with headphones is Turtle Beach X11's. Great little headsets. Good chat quality, and great surround sound and bass. You can also separately adjust the Chat Volume and Game Volume to your liking. Big plus. I would, and have, recommend these headsets to anyone.

The headset I am personally using and love no matter what the contents is I am using it for (music, video or games) is the Sennheiser PC360.

Thought we were talking about 'gaming headsets'. I would not call the PX5 an audiophile headset by any means, but it is a great gaming headset that works for movies and music, that's all I was saying.

The Astro A40 setup is, for any non Audiophile wackjkob(like myself), a VERY solid setup.

First off, the Mixamp is great. If it didnt have Astro branding on it, you could sell it next to other headphone amps. You can run it with or without Dolby Headphone(Surround Sound) too, which is nice.

The A40 Headset.. Not terrible. Does the job.

My setup for the consoles?

Astro Mixamp with a set of Sennheiser PC 350(like the 360's, but closed). A wonderful setup IMO. I used to also use the phones on my PC, plugged into the Asus Xonar Xense sound card, but IVe since upgraded my PC audio setup a bit more. But any good quality headphone with the astro mixamp will work great.

I have a set of Turtle Beach PX21's I use if I need in game chat for PS3 and X360. I'm pretty happy with them and the price is reasonable at about $65.00 USD. People say that they can hear me very clearly and there's little to no background noise with the mic on. Sound wise they are okay, not the clearest set in the world.

I also have a set of Steel Series Siberia V2's. I find this headset to be much better than the Turtle Beaches in terms of sound quality. People have said the mic isn't as crisp and it does pick up more background noise. I also can't use then with my X360 so that was kind of a negative.

Neither set is really hardcore audiophile quality, but if you're deaf in one ear screw it right? :)

I just received the new wireless playstation headphones, and I must say for $100 they are awesome. One thing I don't like is if I am using with the buttkicker it kills all audio going out of the playstation to anything but the headphones so my BK won't work....

I've tried playing with my cans. Digging my room, I found and used ibasso amp paired with Sennh PX100, Ultrasone PL-750, and a v-jays. Finally I settle down with v-jays because of being lightweight and clarity.

Last week I tried my friend's PS3 Wireless Headset, I'm impressed with it's comfort and lightweight, so I bought new one on the next day. haven't tried it again though.. Still inside the box :)
Nice info regarding the buttkicker conflict.

Try this: Go to your Playstation Audio settings and make sure you have Audio Multi-Out setup:
