Is there a trick to using a USB headset with the PS3 ? I was looking into getting one of the ones you guys were talking about when I remembered that I have a Plantronic DSP 400 laying around. Plugged it into the PS3, went to the Audio Settings and activated it for both in and output.
On that screen I was able to hear myself through the mic into the earpieces.
But in the game everything still goes through the TV speakers, no sound through the headset.
Sorry, don't mean to high jack this thread but thought it is the best collection of knowledge already here :)

i bought the older tritton ax360 5.1 surround sound headphones a while back and they have never let me down. i bought them originally for my first person shooters and come with 4 speakers in each ear. great sound and tons of adjustability to suit your listening needs. it changed they way i play video games forever haha. i would only imagine that the tritton ax pros could only improve on their predecessor. best part of the trittons i think is the little decoder box they come with can be used with any other surround system that uses 3.5mm jacks to connect the front/center/rear speakers individually as well as the head phones when you need them. i have my surround speakers connected to the little box at the moment and when i need to be a little quieter for the lady, i power off the speakers and plug in the headset. works like a charm

I've owned all the current headphones and the Astros are easily the best, both in sound and quality and presentation. I have both the wired and wireless. Get them you won't regret it.

I got a quick question for you I'd you don't mind, do the Astros A40 allow you to run three sources at once? For example, playing music from iPod, while listening to race effects from the game, while chatting on the mic? Is this possiable? Thanks in advance

P.S I'm familiar with the hook-up of wires and connections I just need a answer if it can work this way or not

Yeah, you can do that...You may have to play chat audio through your speakers, though...I'm not sure. Check the Astro website for the MixAmp Pro/5.8 wiring diagrams.

I don't have a MixAmp yet, but I've been doing my research...

Thanks, I've downloaded their wiring diagram and have read it carefully, and although it states you can mix your own music in with the game's special effects track, but it doesn't clarify that you can chat and listen at the same time. Although this should be possiable, I just need the reassurance, before plunking down my cash- other than that, looks like a solid solution to my needs.

Like I said, you may have to output the chat audio with your game audio...it's an easy fix in the Audio Settings.

Also, Turtle Beach has a new DSS2 that's similar to the MixAmp Pro. Aux Input for your mp3 player, USB passthrough, it even has presets for virtual speaker positions. It's not as sexy as the Astro unit, though. And if it's anything like the DSS I'm testing out, the max volume is a bit lacking.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on the A40s + MixAmp Pro...

Can you double check me?

Ok here's an update about the PS3 wireless headphone
Confirmed.
Once you turn on the headphone, the console will divert all audio to headphone, including the one came out from composite cable (RCA).

I have had a few gaming headsets over the last two years. I first had the X31 that were ok but wanted something that worked across all the platforms so I picked up the Tritton AX720 and those were great when used with the box and ok just straight connected to my PC. I broke those last week and I decided I wanted wireless again so I would not break them again in the same fashion I broke the AX720.
I picked up the Turtle Beach Ear Force Bravo (Call of duty branding) and they work across all the consoles and PC without a hitch. No interference whatsoever. I bought the DSS 2 but I have not received it yet.
They are a bit cheap looking but my X31 were too and they lasted 1 1/2 without giving me one problem.

Yes you can run everything at once, every input. For instance I use the Xbox party chat as my in game comm for PS3 games for my clan since the PS3 chat is such garbage. So we'll have the 360 chat, PS3 game audio, and a seperate channel with music running from my ipod, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. :D

Hope this helps.

Thought so. I wonder if Sony can change that with a update?

Sent sony a e-mail to see if they can change this. Will update with their response. I want to use my buttkicker!

I suggest Sharkoon X-Tatics DD 5.1. Far superior than any Turtle Beach set I have owned and more bang for your buck than Astros.

I ended up ordering Turtle Beach's new DSS2 Dolby Headphone amp. I should get sometime next week. I had their DSS for a little bit and I was content with it. The DSS2 adds a selection of EQ settings that simulate speaker position. Also, they added an auxiliary in for listening another source (mp3 player, etc.). I'll be using my Grado SR60s with it for now...I still haven't found a good set of gaming headphones...

I was set on the A40 headset with a MixAmp Pro, but after doing some research and lurking their forums, Astro Gaming seems to have a bad reputation. Also, their mic/amp don't seem to play well with 3rd party controllers (Razer Onza and Fanatec CSR)...

I'm thinking of buying this. Thumbs up, LogiForce?

It's a great headset, but with a USB sound card like the Soundblaster Play it only lets voice through on the PS3. Just a warning on that.

Apart from that the sounds is awesome and sounds very natural. The dynamic range of the headset is the best by far from any headset out there. I love it no matter what I listen to, or what I plug it into for that matter. Music, videos, voice chat, gaming. It all sounds equally good. And I am a very picky guy when it comes to how audio should sound.

The microphone I always get praises about because it's so clear and my voice gets through perfectly.

Is there a Mic Volume control?

This sounds more like fanboy rhetoric than anything. What I've noticed is that people like to bag on the Astros because of the price. I've owned literally every headset mentioned in this thread and other than the high end Sen's and my $600 Grados, nothing compares to the Astros for complete package. Sound, quality of materials, comfort. I have to say most of those "reviews" or comments are full of shat. Just my opinon of course but as long as your happy.

Who's the fanboy now, Mayaman? lol, j/k.

I was set on the Astro A40s, but the delay in shipping and the rumors about a bad batch turned me off. Also, the two controllers I'd be using with it are the Razer Onza TE and Fanatec CSR...both of which people are saying have issues with static in the mic. Maybe it's the controllers at fault, but it's an issue that hasn't been solved.

I'm still keeping my options open, though. Just stating what I'm trying next.

LOL I wasn't calling you a fanboy, just the comments about Astro. Been seeing them for years now. Same mysterious "batch" since 2008 LOL.

anyway, as long as your happy with your purchase thats all that matters. I own four different Astro's with mixamp and wireless mixamp, the earbuds, etc. Excellent products and best bang for the buck for people that actually care of gaming sound IMO or course.

I'm anticipating the Tritton/Madcatz warhead 7.1 but their obviously having production or technical issues.

I'd love a pair of A40s, but I wish they had customizable cord lengths...

Also, this MadCatz/Tritton guy irks me:

Is there a Mic Volume control?

Unfortunately not, but I don't miss it and haven't heard anyone complain about me yelling in their ear when talking normally. You can ask Ilonioum or amf7 for reference for that. ;)
So only a mic on/off switch in the mic boom and speaker volume control on the right ear side.

It's bare but I like it that way. The sound for me is perfect as well, but what one likes differs very much from person to person. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I bought a Steelseries 7H USB before but it sounded very bad and was within the same price range at the time. All I could get out of it no matter what input device I used (Yamaha RX-V450 receiver, PC with X-Fi card, Mac Mini, iPod, my TV... whatever) it just gave a overwhelming bass sound that was very dull like you get smaked by a pillow each time. This was in music that has a crisp bass.

What it wouldn't play was this for example. I couldn't even hear Santana. lol

Anyway, being disappointed in what others consider a great gaming headset I went for my trusted brand of which I owned several headphones in the past and knowing their history and use in professional audio, Sennheiser.

Which one do you suggest among those?

  1. SteelSeries Siberia V2 Full-Size
  2. Turtle Beach Ear Force P11
  3. ORB GP1 Gaming Headset

They all costs bellow 45€ (38 British pounds)

I have just realized that the SteelSeries Siberia V2 Full-Size is not PS3 compatible.
The PS3 one is much more expensive.
SIBERIA USB SOUNDCARD is supposed to be functioning with a PS3, but no details are given. Does any one has owns this combination (SteelSeries Siberia V2 Full-Size + SIBERIA USB SOUNDCARD)?

Hi!

I have used headphones for gaming for a while, and I'm pretty active on head-fi forums :P

For consoles the best would be:

Cheap alternative for PS3 only: Sony wireless headset (7.1 dolby headphones)

Cheap for all consoles: Tritton AX720.

Best all-rounder for consoles (IMHO): MixAmp + PC360

MixAmp pro (wired) or MixAmp 5.8 (wireless)

For PC any decent soundcard that was has THX TruStudio or CMSS-3D

Now, if you want headphones and no headsets, there are MANY options such as Sennheiser, AKG, Grado, Creative, Ultrasone...
