Hey guys. I was looking for a realistic driving game, as I haven't owned a racing game for such a long time, but wanted something with more challenge than the NFS where you can pretty much just accelerate through the races. So I went out and bought GT5 thinking it would be great because it's a fun game and maybe I'd learn a thing or two about the mechanics of cars as its something I've always been interested in, but never really had any time to invest into it. Anyway, to the point: basically I thought I'd be able to just pick it up on my own, but I've found my self well and truly confused! I have literally no idea what any this tuning stuff is or how it works. I've had a look at some of the very well written guides on here, but unfortunately they are of no use to me as I have literally no knowledge and dont really understand how things affect the car at all. I know I don't have to tune, but it seems like a big part of the game and it's something I'd really like to learn, so if anyone can help me out it'd be great thanks!

Also sorry for the essay haha.

Welcome to GTPlanet. I have written a beginners guide and posted it in my garage link below. Feel free to stop by the garage and ask questions. It is easier to help if we know what car you are working with and the issues that you are having.

I am sure that you will find many here willing to help.

Thank you and thank you for the quick response. Okay, you're the first guide I looked at (very well written and presented may I add) but my problem is that I don't even understand the basic terminology, for example how front/rear torque distribution would actually affect my car if I changed it. I just don't know where to begin haha. My first attempt at tuning a car, and I use that term lightly, is with my impress sedan wrx sti '10. I literally bought every upgrade for it thinking I'd be able to just take it out and go into some more high speed races, but how wrong I was. I found it near impossible to turn even when al,it's slowed to a halt. I did however follow your beginner guide and change some of settings around which made it more manageable, but it's still pretty awful. I'm guessing that's because that guide is for it without the engine, intake etc upgrades.

You've bought a very nice racing game but a very bad tuning simulator.
GT5 tuning physics are totally crazy, very far away from the reality and sometime totally backwards.
We are all still waiting updates to fix this , but it seems Mr Polyphony digital prefer to spend his time and money with reals race cars.
Have fun. At least, this is a good game for this.

Ooohh haha I see. Well I'd still like to learn about the game ones even if it doesn't teach me anything useful for real life, because it feels like I'm missing out on a large part of the game if I don't learn to.

You're right, tuning cars is a game in the game and you can have very good time with this too.I'm just saying that you can't use real life tuning guide to help.
Motor city guide is very good and clear.
Check also the CSLACR one.https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=216152

If you are having particular trouble with the terminology, try Ronald's dictionary:

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=258486

It should get you started in the right direction as far as putting a word with what your car is doing. If all else fails, just describe the problem and someone here can give you an idea how to fix it. Even better if you post the tune you are working on and some general specs of your car. 👍

Good luck! :D

I shall check that out now, thank you very much :)

You began with what I think is a very difficult car to tune. There was a Federation of International Tester and Tuners challenge that featured this car. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4631639#post4631639

This competition was prior to game update 2.0 that brought some physics changes so some of these tunes may need work to be super fast today. At the very least, you will be able to see how some of the best tuners on GTP approached tuning this car. I would recommend driving these tunes then comparing them to your current tune. Taking note of the differences may reveal some areas for you to test against your driving style.

Ooh that explains a lot. Trust me to pick the most difficult one, I have an obsession with Subarus you see. To be quite honest with you I followed your beginner guide and it made it much more controllable. However I shall definitely check out your link. Once I get my head around the terminology a bit more and learn what effects what, I should be able to tweak it to perfection :D

On a side note I'd like to thank you for your guide to tuning as its helped me tune all my cars and they all run quite smoothly.

Thank you. Glad it helped get you started.

As for the Subaru obsession, I tuned the 2007 WRX and JTQmopar tuned a 2000 WRX in the FITT Rally and Street competition. This is by far the best 4wd tune that I have built to date. JTQ's tune is good too. You will need to set the transmission final drive number to quite a bit lower number if you plan to try these tunes on longer tracks. These were both tuned for Eiger Short track. Link... https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7421534#post7421534
