This will be the family car & i was wondering if people could help decide on what to look for.
We are alooking at the follwoing:
Lexus IS200
BmW 5 series
BMW 3 series
Subaru Impreza (i not there luxury but there nice)
Audi A4

In terms of value for money for under £4k,i was wondering what peoples opinions on any of the above cars are. what should i look for if buying them. are repairs expensive, insurance etc.
Just general help would helpful.
Thanx

Can you get Lexus is200 for 4000?

For the 3 series for 4 grand you could get yourself a top of the range E36. I wouldnt bother with the A4 as the model thats in your price range wasnt regarded to highly compred to the 3 series and BMW.

You could get a nice volvoS40 for your money aswell.

Yeah, but I wouldn't want one with over 100,000 miles on it. Something electrical is bound to go wrong on the car. BMW's are also a no go for the exact same reason, only more so.
Try this.

After a bit of research i realised i cant get an IS200.

There are plenty of A4's for under 4k. same as 3 or 5 series.

I dont really no if i want a volvo. i mean, its a volvo! its just the badge that puts me off, sad i know, but its a fact.

Our nxt door neighbour has an A4 1.8T Quattro that is 2 years old & really nice, and problem if we get a A4 for our money its gonna look pap compared with theres i feel.

So on a 3 or 5 series,
whats reliability like?
are spares/parts/servicing expensive?
Best engine?
i read that the 318 or 328 are best, but are they at all quick??

Our last car was a Supra which was mega quick!

I think I would go for the Impreza. Nothing against the others, but for 4K, you could get a much newer, nicer condition Impreza that will be cheaper to fix once it comes time to do so.

No offence but thats BS.

I wouldnt really class a E36 bmw as luxury to be honest.

Id for a A8. Or A6 even.
Id really consider the volvo aswell the S80 and S60. The S60 is a rather nice looking car.

Like Famine and Y_W have said, its got to be an A8 all the way. if you want luxury you might as well forget about the smaller 'premium' cars (A4, 3-series, IS200 etc) they are too compromised to be truely luxurious. Older A8's, 7-series or S-classes are so cheap for what you get, as long as you buy a good one. The A8, looks wise, has aged well compared with the Merc and BMW.

If your going to get an A8 you might as well go for the 4.2 Quattro :sly:

Um, no. BMWs can forever, 100,000 miles is like the run in period. I assume Audis are along the same vane. Very well made cars. I'd suggest getting a 3 series BMW for your £4k 👍

Ent know way i can get a decent A8 for £4K! the car needs to be relatively new.

Before we get confused this is a car for me my mum n dad. And she wants something as new as poss. I think the oldest she'd go is maybe 95??

3/5 series or A4's are luxury enough, we dont want a mini-limo. and bare in mind we are used to an 1990 Supra & a Clio, any of the above mensioned cars will be alot more luxury than the current turds we own.

Did you not click on the link I provided you with?

There was a full page of "decent" A8s for less than £4,000. 100,000 miles is easy meat to a 4.2 litre V8 and under-average for a 10 year old car. As long as there's a full service history, you're laughing.

Volvo S70/V70 lot of car and luxury for the money. Better value than either an Audi or BMW. :)

BMW 5 series seem better value than 3 series. And 3 series is such a predictable choice...

I'd love an Audi A8 if it wasn't for the insurance cost.

I'd like an A8, but its just not the sensible choice now is it! Plus we aint gonna get it from private, its just easier to buy from a dealer.

Insurance would be ridiculous & mpg would be as bad if not worse than da Supra.

I think what 555 is after is an small executive.

If you want as new as possible however you could do much worse than a volvo or just get a focus.

The A8 will do 25mpg. As for buying from a dealer they are expensive. Any Car you see from autotrader you can slap on another 1 to 1.5 grand.

I go by this philiosophy when buying private. I'll give the car a thorough check over and then if after a week I do find somthing wrong with it, If I was silly enough to buty it there will be another person out there that will buy it.

Not much does go wrong with the A8 however. It was designed in the days in which the germans were having large executive wars and tehy made sure their flagship cars were immaculate.

BMW drivetrains can go forever. BMW electrical pieces don't. 100,000 miles is around the time that a BMW 5 and 7 series electric odometer goes, usually taking along most of the dashboard electricals. A 3 series, which isn't filled with that many electrical bits, is a far better choice than any other older BMW, but they are quite small inside (small enough that making it a sedan is hardly noticible in space gained).

A 3-series with its RWD is going to offer cramped leg room in the back, if thats where you are going to spend most of your time, you should persuade the one with the cheque book to get something a little bigger :sly:

No-one agrees with me on the S-Class?

I have to say I'm surprised.

I wont be spending any time in the back thank you! my short-ass mum will be in the back seats, not moi!

I'd like an Impreza! you try persuadin her 4 me then! lol

 I like you.

How old are you BTW?

Just like to say that you can pick up renault clio sports 172 for £4 grand.

Thank you! lol. Im 20 & im 6ft1. my mums 5ft1! ent know way she sits in the front wile i get to sit wit me knees up my ass! lol

Ent know way im getting another Clio, thats what i drive & the things blumin horrible! to cramped, heavy clutch & you cant tell what gear your in.

For those that sudgested the Volvo's, she seems interested in a Volvo, what is the best/fastest volvo estate to get??

I doubt you'd get that newer model for £4k...

The fastest Volvo estates for around £4k or under would be 850 T5s, old shape V70 T5s and some T-5R and R estates. Theres also an AWD 2.5 LPT 850/V70. If you were going for maximum luxury the V90 3.0 would probably be the best bet.

Okay, enough's enough. Stop it now. You're 20 years old. You can manage to type in English for our international members, surely?

It's in the Terms of Service:

ToS
  • No slang words that promote laziness, ie; "r", "u", "plz", etc.
  • Half decent grammar is expected. Use of capital letters starting sentences is looked upon favorably. Spelling half decently is also encouraged.

"Ent" is only a word when referring to the living trees in The Lord of the Rings. "Know" refers to things you have learned. "Wile" refers to wasting something (usually time) or having cunning. "Wit" is humour.

There is no way I'm getting another Clio, that's what I drive & the thing's blumin horrible! Too cramped, heavy clutch & you can't tell what gear you're in.

Now, I'm not asking you to type perfectly all the time - though it ought to be something you strive for it isn't particularly important, and the apostrophes and suchlike are really niceties rather than necessities - but please remember that GTPlanet isn't restricted to members from the UK familiar with your regional slang dialect.

Thank you - and I agree with you about the Clio. Read my review of it...

I is so soz dat i is typin wrong it ent my fault i wuz raized badly! :P

All i did was type "ent" you know what it means so what does it matter??

I think a volvo seems like a safe bet, although i keep seeing alot of nice Impreza's advertised. i would love one, but she's hard to persuad. Subaru's are built to last ent (sorry, aren't) they??
