Hi,

I'm in the process of building a computer to be used just for sim racing (iRacing) and nothing else. I have all other parts ready to go (posted below) and can't decide on the GPU to get the resolution (5760x1080; max settings) and a minimum of 60fps. I will have the following items turned off...onscreen steering wheel, 2 pass shadows and higher detail in mirrors.

My budget is around $800US and with the below setup I am right around $690US.

Spec of the new build...
CPU: Core i5-3570k
Motherboard: Biostar H77MU3
RAM: Microcenter 401190
Video Card(s): Sapphire Tech 100355OCL 7850 2GB
OS/App HDD: SanDisk SDSSDHP-128G-G25
Storage HDD: Seagate ST500DM002
Power Supply: Corsair CX430M
Case: NZXT Source 210
CPU Cooler: Rosewill RCX-ZAIO-92

No overclocking is planned.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Geran Brown

I am an nVidia guy, first off I went with an i7. An i5 is all you need for iRacing so that's a great decision on your part. For the video I went with two GTX 670's in SLI mode. 5760x1080 and I am experimenting with various settings, ATM I have it capped at around 85 FPS and to be honest I see no difference in leaving it uncapped.

The only thing I turn off are the 2 shadows and of course the wheel and arms, high detail in the mirrors and everything else I leave on, maxed out. When it comes down to it you are seeing an equal amount of nVidia guys with ATI, IMO ATI had an edge until recently, nVidia has been coming out with some killer cards. I don't really think it matters which one you use, get a good card at a good deal, nVidia's new Titan cost a small fortune ATM and if I was rich perhaps.

I think you are on the right track, I usually get what my gut tells me to get, without overspending.

So far my build is within my budget of $800USD for the computer with about $40 left over. I really don't want to run Crossfire or SLI since I know iRacing isn't really compatible since their aren't any profiles from AMD or Nvidia.

I would definitely get a better power supply. At least a 500w
Understood...how's everything else look?

Make sure the monitors have Display ports or mini's. You don't want to need to use active adapters.

Because with a AMD card running triples you must have one active DisplayPort on one monitor. If you don't have one you will need an expensive DP adaptor. Which will give you a weak link in your video chain. They are subject to fail over time. Plus most newer monitors have the port built in.

Or I could just go with Nvidia and not have to worry about displayport of any kind and run DVI and/or hdmi.

What is your setup like and what frame rates are you getting (what's turned off and what's turned on at what quality)?

I'm running a solo 7970 3GB capped at 96 fps with all on except crowds and no steering wheel. I have everything else on and maxed. 3 x 27" Asus monitors. Just saying by not needing DP adapters you will have less problems.

Thanks mate! I think the 7850 will suffice on three 24" monitors. If not I can sell it and upgrade.
