Maximum respect if you get it painted/vinyl-d like this...

He's buying a big, posh, Jaaaag. It'll be a packet of pate fois gras, what.

I was thinking about this on the way into work this morning. We don't have any custard. And we object to foie gras on moral grounds. Will a bottle of Tanqueray Gin be acceptable?

Only if I never have to pay another Sky bill ever again. But the worst thing about that shot is the number of aero-destroying annoyance devices strapped to the roof!

Haha fair enough.

But which wheels did you opt for? Are they the ones in the pic above?

Psh, gin? How plebeian. You drive a big Jaaaagg now.

You're in Scotland, no? How about some bottle of scotch?

Thats quite beautiful... but...

Put any thought into parallel parking? It's quite long.

But still a lovely car. I'm highly jealous.

5.2 metres long, I think. I am teh awesome at parallel parking!

Only 8hrs until I get it. Probably not going to achieve much at work today.

Since even base Fords come with autopark these days, I'd expect the Jaaaaag to have a teleportation device.

Or a crew of Oompa Loompas who pop out, pick it up and carry it to the parking space.

Or it's just like parking a van, only with windows and sensors...

Had a nice time reading through this thread, I'd loved a Quattroporte though

Then again, I still prefer the Jaguar above the BMW. Good choice.

Did I mention I only judge after looks, sounds and image? I never drove or even sat in one of these, except, well, I've had a short but quick ride in the Quattroporte, I'm guessing that's why I prefer it :p

He's got a brand new car, looks like Jaguar, Its got leather seats(?), Its got a CD player(?)
/Feeder

Looks great!

Also, this is the LWB model, like mine.

I had a peer at the back row of an XJ L today, which I've not done before. Enough room to swing a poor person in the back.

Didn't get a chance to drive the SS today (they're popular at these Jag days, for some reason...) but had my first drive in the diesel, which is still rather lovely. Not as lovely as the supercharged V8, but still amusingly quick. Did have another go in an XFR. The AUP doesn't let me say what speed I accidentally managed...

Same unfortunate consequence as the STR then? Supercharged V8, but pressing the makefunnoisenow pedal for more than a fraction of a second generally ended up moving you a billion feet nearer the horizon - and the comfy somewhat dulled any sensation of speed.

Sorry occifer.

Well said and grats on the car! Very cool. 👍

I don't think that buying an M5 or an XJ SS is on any real level a "sensible" choice. But we talked over the notion of buying a sportscar, and it simply wouldn't get used. So we wanted something "ultimate", that could cart the family round, and which would get used. Your point about not getting up early to take an M5 for a backroad blast is valid, but then the M5 would get use in other occasions. It wouldn't be like a Caterham that required me to get up early to get any use at all.

So, let's explore the "ultimate" nature of that statement. What is it? Is it the big engine? The massive spec? The bragging rights? Is it that I want a really fast car, even though your points regarding the accessibility of that performance are valid? Sure, I'm not going to be able to explore the performance (inc handling) envelope of either car with any sort of regularity. But then, would I be able to if I bought a sportscar?

For me, buying an M5 or XJ SS is about having that arsenal of weaponry with me whenever I'm driving, should the opportunity to use it arise. It's not about finding myself on an empty country road in an E350 and then realising I brought the wrong car/too many children on this trip.

And it's about overtaking. A 530d is 300bhp. An M5 is 550bhp. That extra 250bhp turns short straights into overtaking opportunities in a way that a simple 0-60 benchmark can't fully convey.

But it's also about it being my family's 40th birthday present to me. I fully concede that there's no real rational explanation for it, and I don't really care about that.

Exactly that. Was following another car in the outside lane already doing "a rate of knots". They pulled into the middle lane and I squeezed the go pedal a little harder. Quickly found myself doing "a rate of knots" plus another thirty percent.

Same engine as GG's XJ, so I expect he'll find himself in the same situation on several occasions.

I'm intrigued to try the XFR-S they'll be bringing out shortly. You'd not think 50bhp on-paper would make much difference when you already have 500-odd, but the XKR-S feels an order of magnitude quicker than the "regular" XFR. The XFR-S will feel pretty ludicrous.

Some shots of the M5

Picked up the XJ today. Ran a few errands. 40-odd miles done.

I'm happy to say that it's everything I remember it being from the test drive. It looks superb, it's big enough that everyone's comfortable, the B&W stereo is (predictably) awesome, and it's every bit as calm and restful to drive as the M5 wasn't. And then, even though I'm running it in, a swift kick of the throttle brings the noise, and the pace.

I'm absolutely loving it.

They say an engine that is run in hard and fast benefits over a cossetted one...
