Hispania F111 Launch

That's the front wing from last years car isn't it? Is this just last years car in a new livery?

No, that's this years car. Apparently the new front end failed the crash tests, so they've had to bolt on last years front wing.

Not looking good for Mr. Kolles, is it? :p

Its the F110 wing on the F111 chassis. As SaberFire said, rumour is the F111 front wing failed FIA crash tests.
But HRT do have a brand new car, they couldn't run the F110 anyway as it did have a double diffuser. So its not possible for them to just run the F110.

That explains it then. I knew the front wing looked familiar, and I remember the one from the release images of this car being a lot more complex.

Yeah, it failed a crash test. They apparenty built a second wing and submitted it for testing, but there's been no word on whether or not is passed. The team requested permission to race regardless of the 107% rule, citing "special circumstances", so I'm willing to bet they felt they could have qualified with the new wing. After all, Liuzzi was only a second and a half adrift of the 107% margin, and considering that he was using an old front wing that would have compromised the aerodynamics, it's entirely coneivable that he, at least, could have qualified.

The new front wing is almost a complete copy of the BGP-001 front wing from 2009.

It is reasonable that this wing could shave off a second or so, but the other cars are just going to get faster and faster over the season, and I doubt HRT have the budget to aggressively develop their car.

I'm no expert but I can see many differences between the two front wings.
Edit: the brawn and hrt front wings that is.

Same. They're only vaguely similar. And Formula 1 aerodynamics are designed in such a way that the whole car works as one. What happens at the front end will have consequences at the back end, which is why the F110 wing is a bad idea on the F111 chassis.

Its because their chief designer is Paul White who previously worked with Honda ;).

Yeah, I was reading through a thread on F1T and I was actually somewhat surprised to see that they'd got Paul White somewhere down the line. Thinking about it, HRT doesn't actually have a *bad team, as such. Just really, really, really terrible planning and execution.

HRT have a decent technical team of Paul White and Geoff Willis, who are capable of designing a decent and reliable car (Willis is well known for helping to improve the reliability of the Red Bull cars when he was there).
Colin Kolles and his engineers from his LMS team are also a good team of people and are well organised. Without them, HRT wouldn't have made Bahrain last year.

HRT's weakness is their owners (Carabante and the other spanish investors) and their lack of bringing up the goods. They failed to secure the Toyota deal and they failed to keep up payments to Dallara (although that was a little admissable as that was more Campos' fault). They haven't managed to find decent sponsors beyond those brought by their pay drivers. This has prevented them from paying suppliers to produce and deliver parts on time and hence prevented Kolles from putting the cars together and running them in testing and practice.

I'm slightly surprised they haven't found many sponsors because while their 2010 season wasn't amazing, it was decent all things considered. By the end of the season they had gained time from a car that had no development on it - all setup work! Surely they could have convinced a few sponsors onboard from this, as there is a few positives to spin a decent story and interest sponsors. I'm not completely surprised though, as Lotus and Virgin rely on money from their owners and associated sponsors rather than any sponsors that have come onboard because of their performances.

So yeah, HRT are not that bad as a team. They are certainly not the worst team to grace the sport, they have already achieved more than many in the past.

Missed the bit of the race where it said what happened to HRT - shame they didn't make it in - but kindof glad to see that they're upholding the change in the laws!

C.

They'll really need to do a lot of work before they get to Malaysia, atleast keep up with the Virgins. The technical team is rather decent and can do a lot of work if given the necessary parts.

Oh well, the HRT team owners should be constantly reminded of this:

Teams always copy other successful designs, but that doesn't mean it will work. Like the above could be described as a simplified replica of the wing from the RB5.
