Honda Cup Warmup Race
Honda Accord Euro-R '02 at Twin Ring Motegi - East Short Course

[As always, if anyone would like to volunteer to take a picture, it will go here :)]
Many thanks to LancerEvo7GSR for the picture!

Race Specifics

  • Arcade Mode Time Trial - hotlap
  • Power: 0% (216 HP)
  • Weight: -10% (1251 kg)
  • Tire Type: N3 (also known as Road or RD)
  • Driving aids and transmission mode are open.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times; rumble strips are part of the track; no contact with walls allowed at any time.
  • Please PM me your final time by Tuesday August 25 by 11:59 pm GMT (world clock).

Series Information and General Rules

  • All six races will be run in Arcade Mode and each will last one week, with a submission deadline of Tuesday at 11:59 PM GMT.
  • The cars used will be a variety of Hondas, mostly road cars on standard (N) tires, but with race cars appearing as well. Make sure you have all Hondas, used and new, unlocked in Arcade Mode, because few of the cars I will use are available from the beginning.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times; rumble strips are part of the track; no contact with walls allowed at any time.
  • Discussion of times in the race thread during the week will be limited to split times (T1, T2, etc.). Final times are not to be discussed and must be submitted to me by PM before the week's deadline.
  • Please save your best lap replay just in case I request proof, which is unlikely but possible. Generally, no proof will be necessary for the winner or for anyone else; however, I reserve the right to request a photo of a time if I am suspicious of it.
  • Each race will award points towards the overall championship standings to all who submit a clean lap/race time, with the winner receiving 10 points, second place 8, third place 6, and fourth on down each separated by 1 point (5, 4, 3, etc.). No points will be awarded to a non-submitting driver. You do not have to announce your participation in the championship beforehand: anyone may participate in a race and be counted into the championship points, even if you do not plan on running all the races; similarly, there is no obligation to participate in every race. The driver with the most points at the end of the six races will win the championship.

Given the general dislike of Twin Ring Motegi, of N tires, and of FF cars in general, this combo may look unappealing at first. However, I encourage you to try it for yourself, because this car handles very well for its drivetrain, the N3 tires are fairly grippy, and the East Course is vastly more fun than the full road course. There will be no points awarded for this race, but if you're interested, I encourage you to give it a try. It's really pretty addictive. :dopey: Have fun! :)

First run...good car to start this series with...:D

I'm glad you like it, raz. 👍 I was a little worried that you wouldn't like all of the races with N tires because you've said that you don't take well to them, but it seems that a car that handles nicely from the beginning can remedy that.

That said, the car's handling is a little "funny" - the four-wheel slide that comes from being too aggressive with the throttle and too noncommittal with the steering takes some getting used to, but it disappears when you take a good line and are committed with your inputs. Oddly, an awful lot of FF Hondas behave similarly, and I don't know why; it isn't realistic, although it does make them fun. :D Plus, this car and many other Hondas sound great, which always adds significantly to the enjoyment for me.

Will try to get in some laps this week. Work pretty hectic. Everyone check out Austin's Youtube videos. He's too modest to promote them. Loved the signature slide in the Bentley on S-15. Link at the bottom of post #1.

Congrats on your GTRP ranking. I should put all of my times in to give you some competition. I might crack the 300 mark. lol. We all should enter our times. Nice to see some names we would know.

edit: Put in those 5 laps. 41.65 - 1'16.922

I did see them...Very nice 👍 Congrats!
I have been doing some licenses as well, trying to beat Smallhorses' time. Shhhh don't tell him :D
Since I still have his save on my card.
I think he was only doing the times to get gold did not really go full out.
Now that I have the GTPR link I can work on my times a little more.

N Tyres or not I'm still participating...gotta learn right :banghead:

You guys really are too kind; considering how holl01 has the best time for every license on GTRP, the videos that I've made of license tests that he's uploaded as well really aren't worth watching, unless you want to see how a non-alien sets an okay time. Plus, I'm terrible at many of the tests for which I didn't make a video, especially the simplest ones: I gave a sincere effort on every license, but I'm way down on the start and stop tests (109th on B2 ) and on the ones that involve just a single, fast corner (e.g. A3 and A4). Plus, there's the odd one that just totally confounds me (57th on IB1 and 66th on IB12 :banghead:).

Refining times on license tests really is a fun way to play GT4 competitively even when there isn't really a competition, per se. You get to compare yourself with the best of the best, as well as with people you know (which does indeed make it more fun), and see how you rank. There will certainly be tests that stump you, and tests that pleasantly surprise you by how far up the leaderboard you are (for me, the second place on IA16 and third on B14).

Sorry, that's enough off-topic rambling. raz, I'm glad you're willing to give N tires a good effort, and the Hondas make it easy anyway by still having quite a bit of grip on them. I think you'll be surprised at how well you fare. 👍

I'm relatively satisfied with the time I have now in this race, but I could probably do a couple tenths better. I took the esses before T1 quite well, but I've done a few other corners a little better. I don't think I'll reach the barrier I hope to break, but I'm still discovering how to better drive this car, so who knows what could happen.

Edit: I tried to improve but couldn't. I think the time I have now is my final one, because I can only stay even with the ghost until the second ess section, where I can theoretically do a tenth better but never on a fast lap. And a tenth really isn't much to be concerned about.

Looks like a great combo, Austin. 👍 I'll give it a shot tomorrow, I've been driving at Motegi East a lot lately, so my splits might be half decent. Don't expect any competition though! I sincerely hope my favourite Honda will be in one of these races, too :D

My best time so far...weird how ff cars still can't find traction even with stickier tires, my honda irl sure doesn't act like that.:boggled:

Well, I think we all know that GT4 has many physics flaws, the total lack of traction in FFs being one of them. In this car, though, I don't think it's too bad. I'm sure that if you matted the throttle from a standstill in a 216 HP, 1251 kg FF road car with very soft street tires (about equivalent to N3s), the drive wheels would have no traction, just like in the game. The way the wheels slightly lose traction in second gear when at full throttle and turning doesn't seem so far off, either. But I agree that a car like the Integra Type R DC5 should have more traction rather than endlessly wheelspinning in second gear in a straight line.

Ran final laps today. Made small improvement. Submitted time. Enjoying the regular cars.

On a lighter note. Jumped into the 72 Life Step Van for a few laps. Worried that without TCS I might have some wheelspin. LOL. Funny how 3 decades can make you forget how bad the vans were back then. Only had to brake for the first turn after the start. Was able to coast/throttle through the rest, even the hairpin before the finish. Got it up to 64mph before the engine bogged down and dropped down to 61-62. Never got to drive the Step IRL. But the VW Van probably wasn't much different.

I can't do any better...

T1 - 39.062
T2 - 1'14.297...

But that's how my lap looks like...

I've had a go at this, splits are:

T1 38.607
T2 1'13.242

Losing it all in T1, but not sure where! God this is like golding all the licenses again, iritating but so addictive:banghead:

I went camping since Thursday, have not had a chance to improve...I can see I have lots of work tonight :D

Will up date later

I'm glad you like a break from race cars sometimes, too; I personally prefer road cars with N tires and slow race cars with R1 tires. Fast race cars have much less appeal to me, and I've always hated driving any car with grippy tires because their grip level goes far beyond that of any obtainable tire in reality.

The Step Van makes no sense to me because it looks too small to be called a van, and its 30 HP would barely move one person, let alone five or more. I also don't think the transmission makes any sense, because the car is awfully far up in the rev range in high gear no matter whether you're traveling 40 or 60 mph.

I can't do any better...

That's still a good lap. 👍 Remember that the idea is ultimately to learn how to drive the fastest lap you can, not to be the fastest of everyone.

I assure you that we all know what you mean. Hotlapping in FF cars is strangely addictive because the limit seems so easy to find, which applies to those featured in license tests, too. As for T1, the critical part is the fourth corner (the right-hand part of the ess), which you have to cut as much as possible. Missing the line slightly really hurts your time, and you have to make it as straight as possible to keep your speed up.

I suspect you will find a large improvement. There always seems to be more time to take!

Ahhh... I felt soo relief after you said that... yes gain confidence in yourself!!!

Thanks BTW mate...

Congratulations to InsaneRacer and ABud for the podium times, and to all participants. 👍 It's great to see this much interest in just a warmup race (although now I think I should have included it in a points-paying round!).

I will take a video of my lap sometime, perhaps tonight if I can. It's clean - barely!

I finally found the camera. I'm certain that my lap is clean at the right-hand ess turn (although only barely), as I checked thoroughly in Photomode as both the front and rear tire entered the rumble strip.

Nothing special in that turn. 👍

Good lap, but you could have been faster in a few areas. :trouble:
