Hot Wheels and Matchbox Customizing Thread

Well I went ahead and put on some of the home print decals on my monster truck 'test bed' and they look pretty good. Question is... what to seal them on with?

The paper when printed is covered in a couple layers of acrylic gloss varnish, and the paint is mixed with Johnsons Klear.

Opinions please? And any feedback of course is always welcome :)

With so many planar panels, it shouldn't be too difficult to craft. Only tough part is how much I want to dump into making those wheels.

Good point but all that being said, such a thing wouldn't level the playing field in my country. RRs are rare in the UK.

Somehow I think Mexico for the most part only has Hot Wheels and Matchbox on the side, so it makes sense to just simply the rules by restricting it to what is most available. Like... if you guy had a contest with regional-based rules, it'd probably be limited to Matchbox and Majorettes only.

Funnily enough, it's actually HW who have the major market share over here.. There's MB and Majorette (both very limited selection of vehicle line-up), but HW mainline is what you'd find most over here, and i'm not sure whether we get $upers in the U.K anymore.. haven't come across one for over 9yrs. :grumpy:

Good point but all that being said, such a thing wouldn't level the playing field in my country (if HW specific contests took place over here in the U.K), as i imagine the more wealthy participants would go for real rider wheels, but those wheels are rare as rocking horse do-do over here..

Infact, HW don't even sell any special lines in the UK. To purchase those kind of wheels, it would have to be internationally.

Oh man I almost, almost want to show you the case where I keep my Real Rider tires :3 just to be mean lol.

No. A year ago or so a guy over here started selling sets of Real Rider axles. I don't have the slightest idea where he got them from... nor do I care. Well I do lol, but I wasn't gonna ask. I bought about 500 axle sets off him.
 
Yes. I've always wondered where did all those came from because I wasn't the only one by faaar that bought axle sets off him. Everyone I know now has hundreds of rubber tires to play with, literally. That is why you see so many "simple" wheel swaps from me, because I do have a lot of available axles to use.
 
i know I'm slightly off subject as its not pertaining to the hotwheels only discusion you guys are currently having...

but has anyone thought of usng slot car axles and tires? I'm sure you can get some HO tycos pretty cheap and easy reguardless of your location on the globe.

I have used them. The Nova Gasser I put together last year wears Aurora slot car axles in the rear, because they look like slot mags. Clickety:

Most of the stuff I've done has been painted by my friend Ahmed, with whom I do the Custom Diecast México blog. He and his dad run a bodyshop, so we have access to an infinite array of automotive paint and equipment, and the knowledge of his dad, as he also customizes cars and model kits and stuff. So most of the stuff you see comijng from me is painted with quality automotive paint and covered in urethane clear, hence the awesome finish on most of my customs.

I've painted a few myself with cheap rattlecan paint but they come nowhere near close to what Ahmed and his dad can do. In exchange, I've been the "designer" part of Custom Diecast México, producing the livery and custom tampos of many of the cars we've done. We've assembled a good team (:

Well, that's more a lack of time from my part. Ahmed and his dad have done stuff like that with epoxy, and I myself have one in the works done with epoxxy too, in the form of a custom fascia for a Ford Anglia that's already done. Still, there's a loooong way to go for me. I've never cut and joined two cars together for example.
 
I had several ideas lined up but school is in effect now. Once I get out and grab myself a real job, my weekends will be free.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll have to make a retirtement hobby out of this, as I have way way waaaaay more projects than I can handle now :lol:

Been down that route already. Bought some Fuchs wheels for a tomica Porsche (deeper dish than the standard jobbies), and for the most part they're great.. Unfortunately the tyres are'nt so great, they're quite a soft rubber and one of them has already split in half.. besides the tyre wall was too large for what i wanted to achieve. Though a bit of glue and they'll be used for something else (split window Samba). They weren't to easy too come by though, had to ship them from the U.S.

Yeah time is the main hold up for most people I would think. Was hoping to get some time this evening, but alas, family first. Still, some quality time with my son and the HW track was good fun :)

@Cano, thanks for the info. I have a friend who owns a body shop so I may have to call on his services if I can make some decent customs!

Well, here they are. @Emmcee might want to take a peek too, as well as, well, everyone else lol. I'm such a show off :lol:

These are all HW Real Riders of various models. The bag in the center slot holds the wasted axles I pry off restoration projects. Clickey:

And these are all the rest :lol: there's various brand axles in these, many of them rubber-tired, as well as HW basic plastic tires, some of them out of production by now like the 7 spokes and of course, the black walls and wide whites, and the redlines to boot. The most empty case holds the axles I've pried off recent projects, as well as some construction tires. Clickey:
