I just resumed my White series. Just finished painting 3 cars. Need to clear coat it and then print out some tampos.
 
You guys have me looking forward to digging through my HWs from when I was a kid when I'm at my parents' next month. I had some pretty cool stuff. I looked briefly last time I was there and found a 250TR that would be a pretty cool resto candidate. There's a whole storage bin with a lot of cars buried in it so I'll have to see what's in there.
 
Forgot to mention this, but when i went in hobby lobby yesterday, i saw something while i was looking in the model car paint section called "decal bonder spray". I imagine for our Flintmobile competition were having, if i wanted to add the GTPlanet decal on it this what i would use to apply to it?:confused:

Question about what At1 brought up. When do you have to cut tabs for the axles? Is this done every time you want to remove axles?

Every damned time if you want to keep the axles in their stock lenght. With plastic bases, you just break the tabs with a cutter of with pliers, but with metal bases, taking the axles out is a pain in the ass, because you have to file away all-metal tabs. The Dremel and it's endless bits come in handy in these occasions.

Of course, you can also go the new axle route, but that means getting brass tubes and fabricating the axle entirely again. if you go that route you can simply cut the axle in half and retire it from the base, as you will be joining it again later on.

Firs print and cut the tampos, apply them, then clear them to protect them and integrate them to the car's paint, unless you want a matte look.

When you print out a custom decal on water-decal paper, you need to apply laquer to it so the ink from the printer will stick to the paper permanently. If you don't apply the laquer, the ink might dissolve with the water needed to apply the decals, or the ink could also "break" once it's dry and simply pop off the paper in little pieces. This has happened to me.

When you print the decals, you wait for them to dry completely, then apply a coat of transparent laquer on them to protect them and be able to manipulate them without destroying thre printing. I'd assume that's what the thing you mention is, but really, any transparent laquer will do. If matte finish, better.
 
Thanks so much Cano. Creating new axle's not something I want to get into, or even painting the cars at least at this time. But since my goal is to upgrade the modern mainline cars with real riders, and of course they almost always have plastic base, I should be OK.

Guys, how do you get the paint out of really small places?
Or, more specifically, from around the oil cooler of the Hakosuka GT-R.

Zac, use a box cutter knife, a sewing needle, anything sharp or pointy and scratch away. Getting paint out of nooks and tight crannies ain't nowhere near as bad as getting spray paint in.
 
Oh duh, I use needles when it's needed. I have no idea why that didn't dawn on me for this car. :dunce:

Where do you guys get brass tubes, and how do you make it work?

Yes, maybe not that very brand, but you need some kind of transparent laquer to put over the decal immediately after you've printed it, so it will be protected from the water necesary for applying the decal, and also from your greasy fingers when you manipulate it.

It says on there to use the dremel, but can I cut the tube with other type of cutters? I bought a corded drill today, with variable speed.
 
Wire cutters will just mash the end flat after you cut it. A fast moving tool is the only way to go.
Actually, you could probably use some type of small saw to cut them.
 
Either, doesn't really matter. Store will be cheaper obviously without the shipping. They always have coupons available though, so keep an eye out for that. They'll either be on their website, or they might have a flier in the store you can grab.

I know I have couple of coworkers who frequent the store. I'll ask them about it tomorrow. I know one of them brought in a flyer from them before. đź‘Ť
