Not as alive as it was last year though, probably about 70% of what it was in December, but it is very active... unless you like driving Le Mans prototypes... they don't open too often anymore.

Of course right now it's summer in a great deal of players' regions. There's much more going on when it's wintertime in North America & Europe... when many of us are trapped indoors in evenings when it gets dark & cold outside early.

If you're looking to drag race in a game that has no 1/4 mile track, tree, lights or timing you can find that. If you're looking to race 1 lap races at the Nurb by throwing F1 qualifying tires on a 400hp street car, in many of the same cars night after night, it has that. If you're looking for competitive circuit racing on the many racing tracks in the game, racing that's clean and with some respect for other drivers, that's a lot harder to find.

Your best bet is to go to the Clubs and Leagues section and find a bunch of guys to race with that have an established club thing going.

This is basically what it boils down to, though I'd add NASCAR rooms to the list. There are non-GTP affiliated rooms with room hosts that consistently do wide varieties of PP and tracks races, but they are increasingly rare. If you aren't interested in joining/following a league I personally suggest searching for a room the old fashion way, and if you find one which is hosted nicely add the host to your friends list.

The overwhelming time (like, all but 10 races probably) I've spent in GT5 online has been in one PSN user's room who I met online and liked how he set up his rooms (gradually increasing PP and tire compounds, primarily in the 400-550pp range, generally with 8-12 cars) so I added him to my friend's list and just play whenever he's available; and my own rooms that I set up in a similar fashion to his.

Though many on here may take exception to the way I set it up (somebody on here even said it was “Awful”). You are likely to spend more on tires than on your car if you want to be competitive in my room.
I do set it up more arcade style. Lots of fun.
450pp, 425pp or 400pp
street legal cars, prototypes or tuners
no mics
no tire restrictions, penalties or damage
draft set to weak, and no boost
all aids allowed
I start around 9:30pm U.S. central time.
It is an open lobby, see my signature if interested.
I will post the room number later tonight.

No. Best you can do is run a connection test.
