I've had the game about 6 months now and still cant see how to play online..unless it's only for B-Sp:guilty:ec which I have no interest in..any ideas please?

online play is the greatest part. at your GT home screen click on open lobby and find a race that you are looking for.

Make sure you are playing gt mode, not arcade. Then find the "open lobby" button. I only play online. Its so much more fun.

thanks but I am dumb, where is 'Open Lobby'. Also, is there any security risk cuz as far as I know people can see my 'Home Page' which I'm guessing means they see what I see when I switch the game on..?

the open lobby tab is on the top left of the screen

also the only things people can see is your stats, trophies, and if you are currently playing in a game...

also there is no security risk

Dont be silly, when people see your home page they dont actually see what you are seeing. It simply means that they can see into your home through your tv while your playing. So make sure to clean up a bit before you play, and put some pants on for christs sake.

Umm, guys I think the problem here is that OP hasn't signed up to PSN. If he's not seeing 'Open Lobby' on his home screen then that's a pretty sure sign.

So shidoshi_rob you need to get connected to PSN and be signed in before starting GT5.

There's threads here on GTPlanet telling how to go through the sign in process.

:D   :scared:   :D

Ahem... Anyway, yes the problem could be that the OP hasn't signed up for PSN.
Perhaps is not even connected to the internet??? That doesn't happen automatically.
You must connect a cat network cable from the PS3 to the internet router.
You can also do it with a wireless router - but that's not as stable a connection.

I mean this may seem obvious to some people, but not everyone's as tech savvy as my elderly mother, for example. Who is, as it happens, pretty tech savvy. She lives in a gated community of seniors, and from what I gather, she helps a lot of people figure out their computers & such. The stories she has told me about people (even 10 years younger than her), not understanding technological things... Trust me, it's not simple or obvious to everyone. Not everyone grew up with this sort of thing, for example.

Great comments, thanks everyone.

@smokedogg cheers mate, I will do that, embarrassing how thick I am!

@boshuter oh yeah Sony are tops for security, ask any hacker ;)

@Mio_Col & watermelonounch - I am online and have an account, I just didnt know what button to push to launch online racing. I'm 38 but gadgets have never really interested me. Laughable thing is I am not thick, I work as a Freelance Designer and can do anything in Photoshop - just not on the PS3..now where was the 'On' button again? :)

Right, I'll give it a go after work, look forward to meeting you all online (shidoshi_rob)

If your new to online I recommend joining a shuffle room first to get a feel for how things work. There's no messing about with changing hp/weight/tyre restrictions; Everyone just presses 'goto track' and it automatically gives you a random car from the game.
Also when you join the online part there is a useful help guide, click the question mark on the left.

Okay that's good then, but just to be clear you do need to 'Sign In' to PSN before starting GT5. If you haven't seen the open lobby symbol then you're not signed in.

Also you can set the PS3 to autosign in.

Okay I looked for a video showing how . . . this was the best I could find. turn the volume down or something, it's just music no instructions. But the short segment that starts at 50 seconds shows the Open Lobby being used. How to select and setup your own room.

This is totally understandable!!
It completely depends on what you're used to, or what things you've needed to know.
The PS3 is not the most well laid out design, in fact.
And the GT Life home page, IMHO, is not well designed. It looks pretty, but it's not the most obvious or clear.

That's very good advice.
When it comes to Pub Lobbies - things can be very confusing.
Shuffle races are straight forward, and you don't have to worry about knowing "all the tricks" to the restrictions & tuning of cars for mechanical advantage.
Another good way to start is with NASCARS - if you're into that.

And of course, just get involved in some organized races here on GTP. The organized races are by far the best experiences for your time spent.
