How do you add to realism?

A game can get too realistic, it has to appeal to the guy who wants to adjust fuel/air mixtures on the fly, but it must also appeal to the 10 year old kid who wants to barge his way around a track any way he can. You'd end up with a 10 page options list.

No offense, but I see two problems with that.

A. Since when "must" the GT series appeal to 10-year-olds...?

B. Since when does a "Quick Race" button, a "Car Setup" button, and a "Realism" slider take up 10 pages...? And before you laugh at the idea of a realism slider, Mercedes Benz World Racing had one, and it worked rather well. Of course, even set to full "simulation," MBWR isn't the most realistic game out there, but then again, neither is GT...

When people talk about tyre pressures, fuel/air mix ratios, on-the-fly boost adjustability, etc, it will take more than a slider, maybe not 10 pages but I was making a point.
GT is a game, it's not going for a specific target audience of technical drivers only, of course they want it to appeal to ten year olds.

It's how I see GT also. GT is a game that can be enjoyed by the car fanatic that spends 5+ hours per day on GT and by the 10 year old player that just likes arcade mode every now and again.

In fact for a while now I've been thinking that in GT companies like Nismo and Opera should not only supply a very wide range of aftermarket visual and performance parts but also some "package deals". For example there could be a Sports, Semi-Racing and Racing "package deal" from Nismo and each automatically fits a number of aftermarket visual and performance parts. This allows some people to buy every individual part they require but also the casual gamer to just buy a particular set quicker and less in-depth.

The tire pressures, fuel/air mix ratios, on-the-fly boost adjustability, etc. would be accessed from the "Car Setup" button in the example I gave above, and have its own menu, just like the GT games already have it arranged. And, just like the GT games, you don't have to go into any of that to go racing. You can just go into arcade mode and zoom around a track in a stock car, or even "quick-tune" your car, in GT4. :)

My point is that realistic physics and tuning complexity do not have to eliminate accessibility. If someone wants to make use of the tuning, they'll do so. If not, they won't. Same goes for the realism of the physics, if something along the lines of a "realism slider" is put into place.

And stating "PD wants their game to appeal to 10-year-olds in order to garner more sales" and "Gran Turismo must appeal to 10-year-olds" is saying two different things. :)

I like to jerk my head back when I'm in a powerful car and I suddenly accelerate hard and lean forward when I'm braking
I got so into driving at the Ring on GT4 the other day that when I came into a hard braking zone I leaned my head back to counteract the braking forces, only to find myself looking up, realising I only need to do that in real life.

Hmm.....had that problem the other way around, couldn't really keep my heat straight while riding shotgun in an M5 on semi slicks through the Karusell :lol: (the first 3 laps anyway ;) )

I visited the Ring recently and was blown away by how bumpy the Karusell is in real life! :)

Yes, the compressions at Flugplatz, Fuchsröhre and Tiergarten are vrey very.....extreme (we were allowed to do full laps ;) ), especially the Fuchsröhre one, you can`t imagine it in the game, but in real life, it's fun fun fun :lol:

BTW, about the Karusell, I have a lap with Gan-san in a Honda S2000 (on the Best Motoring : Type R DVD) and he went through the Karusell with over 90 kmh  👍

Something I just started doing yesterday:

When I'm doing night races, I close the curtains and put out all the lights.

When the room is all lit up, I 've got problems with seeing everything clearly on my TV-screen. ( Only in night-races )
