How do you bring down a helicopter?

Anyone know the best area of the helicopters to shoot at to bring them down fast?

I think in San Andreas (and maybe Vice and GTA3?) you could shoot at the pilots head, or the base of the main rotor and bring them down with one shot.

In GTA4 i've never been able to see which side the pilot sits on. I generally just unload on the front but i've also tried hitting the base of the main rotors and also the smaller, rear rotors.
Aiming roughly at where the pilot sits, i've shot down one within 5-10 seconds but other times i've used up 300 rounds and still not brought it down.

Anyone know the best place to hit for sure?
 
Well if I was in a real life helicopter, i wouldnt want to be hit in the gonads but then again you cant really shoot them in a helicopter...
 
Try hitting the blades, esp. the rear. With the rear gone, the heli. will spin downward to a certain death.
 
The Maverick catches fire after 2-3 shots with a sniper rifle. Pilot also sits on the right side for the maverick and the left for the annihilator.

Does this actually work in the game though? I've been using the M4, haven't got a sniper rifle yet.

Also while i'm asking, is there a special spot to hit on the cars? Like the filler cap area in San Andreas?

I've lent my copy to a friend for the weekend and i'm watching the shootout in Heat. Torture :ouch:
 
I think the cockpit is the best area. It's easy to tell on multiplayer that this works, because I've been killed in the seat before without the heli actually being that damaged.
 
Or, obviously, if you have an RPG handy that always works swell. :dopey:
 
Got my R18 copy in the mail today so i'm making my way through the missions now. Bring on the rifles and rocket launchers :)
 
Yeah allways go for the cockpit, or drivers seat on cars, failing that take out the tyres

Not necessarily :P Someone did that to me today in an online game and the whole back end came off, the heli started spinning but I managed to guide it to an to crash land it and escape fine!
 
Another heli crashing tip - if you're in a dog fight, aim your whole heli at the tail of your opponent - a hard enough hit will break it straight off :D Found out by accident, honest...

I'm talking about the rotors alone. The heli. will start going in a circle downward.
