How does GTPlanet feel about Hot Wheels?

I'm almost getting jealous... but at the same time impressed. Are there some Bburago cars in the mix there, or is it mainly Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars? I thought I saw a Peugeot.

About half of my collection mainly from 1988-1997... and some as late as 2005. I still look for really good models.

I count some 40+ Matchbox's that I recognise down to the paint scheme. I don't actually recognise any Hot Wheels brand in that picture, but maybe I'm just being picky.

In my younger years I was a serious Matchbox collector, and still have some 1000+ stashed away in the loft (attic) somewhere. However the quality of the models went seriously downhill when they were bought out in the 1990's and I stopped buying - except for some very nice 50th aniversary models from 2002.

More recently I have been buying selected Hot Wheels brand cars - mostly modified classics with a few concept cars & tuners thrown in. I must have 150+ of these still in their boxes (blister packs). I'd say the quality of these is similar to the quality of the Matcbox 'superfast' series from the 1970's to 1990's. Anything else, especially obscure Chinese brands just looks and feels cheap and nasty in comparason.

Most of those are Matchbox, mixed up with some Hot Wheels, Siku and Majorette models. No Bburagos in that shot. The most recognizable Hot Wheels ones are the metallic blue Indy racer and the similarly coloured Funny Car on the front row - very good looking cars. Also the yellow Indy car, the white Lamborghini Countach (between the BMW 325 and the Trans Am) and the bright green hot rod in the back row are Hot Wheels.

Matchbox always was the main brand here so that has had a bit of an influence of the selection. The Matchbox NASCAR cars are probably my favourites, it took quite a bit of searching to get them.

Based on the wheels alone, I count three hotwheels for sure but I'm curious about the white Lamborghini. I recognize those wheels but I'm not sure it they are Hotwheels or Matchbox. And I remember that majorette brand. I have a few of their cars, my favorite being that Morgan they made.

I dont know why, but yesterday I spent $3 on this. :/ It's 1:18 and it's in yellow.

Oh god, I remember those wheels like it was just yesterday. Out of all your collection I have the red Alfa, Hotwheels Indy car, Dodge Viper, Ferrari Testarossa (with the same decal), and the London bus (which i unfortunately peeled the stickers off :()

The most interesting out of your collection in my opinion is the ice cream dune buggy. Nice wide wheels, It has to be a majorette, isn't it?

I have those wheels on a Corvette. I believe that is Majorette, but I'm not sure.

I used to collect Hot Wheels cars, but eventually grew out of it. A shoebox full were opened and played with, then displayed in a case, before being boxed and stored along with a suitcase full of unopened ones.

I'm actually thinking of starting that up. I'll probably go and buy a bunch over Christmas. And I don't think my collection is quite up to what Greycap has. I wouldn't be surprised if I had more in number, but his are in great condition. I'll have to post a pic at some point.

It really feels like it was yesterday... I had a good laugh when I realized that I own a PS3 but still like looking at these little toy cars! My most unfortunate thing is playing with the blue Hot Wheels Indy racer a bit too much, the axles are bent nowadays. :(

EDIT - Not as badly as it seemed! Rolls still flawlessly, and straight as an arrow. Only the rear wing has a small dent in the paint, otherwise it's in great condition. :)

The dune buggy is a Majorette indeed, oddly enough it's one of the "just for the laugh" cars among many "serious" ones I've collected.

Well, if we counted numbers only I could bring at least around 30+ more to the battle but these were the ones worth showing to the world. :p

That makes sense. I was wondering how you could have lived through childhood and kept those in such great condition, with only that school bus getting beat up:drool:.

Oh, no, it's not like you may think... many of those in the picture are the ones I liked the most. It's just that they've spent their life indoors, bent axles and paint chips are pretty much the worst thing that can happen in such conditions. The ones I didn't show are mainly of poor quality, plastic Matchbox and Majorette replicas bought for very cheap prices.

Even my nice indoor ones are in pretty bad shape. Quite a few have axles so bent that the wheels don't roll or have half the pain missing.

And then there are the ones that I used to take outside where I made little cities in the dirt. I have no idea where most of those are right now, but I know that every so often I will go and dig something outside and find another car in the dirt. I showed those little guys no mercy.

I did buy hot wheels cars but also a lot more besides, maisto, burago and matchbox as well, matchbox and burago being my old faviroutes. I remember really wanting a particular hot wheels car when I was in primary school, BMW Z3 in silver. Maybe I will have to start collecting toy cars again:p

Dude hot wheels are awesome! Especially when you put little motors on them and face them towards a ramp!:dunce:👍

You can also get good money for them on ebay.

I'm still partial to buying the odd dinky Hot Wheels model now and again if it catches my eye. In fact my latest two are a Viper and an old Gen2 Corvette. The Viper I have a pic of below.

But since diecast collecting is a bit more of a serious hobby to me, I focus alot more on 1/18th scaled models, and I think I only have one Hot Wheels in that scale at the moment, a Dodge Viper CC Concept. HW tend to charge some silly prices for their Super Elite range of models.

IMHO there is a huge difference between 1/64 toy cars and 1/18 models. Comparing them is like comparing the newest Aston/Ferrari/Porsche to a used Lada/Skoda/Yugo - they are just in another league both in terms of quality and price. Now I am not taking a dig at you or ayone else, in fact I am happy to admit that I still buy lots of toys for myself, and I am in my 30's. Just this week I bought nearly a dozen more including this cute little Go Kart.

I may choose to keep it in its box, but most others would tear it open and go play with it on the floor or in the garden. Very few of the thousands of these produced will survive in great condition, highlighting another major difference between toys and models. How many people would go and play with their limited edition 1/18 model in the garden, ramp it down the stairs or crash it against another similar sized model? I know I treated my 1/64's like that and worse when I was a child, but now I choose to protect them as much as possible whilst still being able to put them out on display.

They were my favorite toy when I was little. I don't play with them anymore, but my collection has since doubled. I even have some of my most realistic ones on display, as well as some vintage redlines form '67-'69.

Car-less... i have the Go Kart also, just different design. It's an awesome little toy. lol

I've got a friend who collects them. He collects any type of model car on any scale in his den. Some impressive stuff, I usually prefer the real thing. :p

I used to do that with my 1:24ths. That was fun, especially once I found out that you could easily pull the bodies off.

Im guessing because a hotwheels car cost $1 whereas a good 1/18 will cost you around $100

I do wish 1/18's weren't so expensive though. Just think of how much you could have with explosives :trouble:

Got a Ferrari F50 the other day. The 1/64 scale models, when they don't look mutated, mutilated, or like ricers, are stunning. I have only been able to appreciate the F50's beauty in this size. However, the Ferrari badge was offset!

I have a purple convertible which looks absolutely stunning and a matchbox F50 that isn't quite so great. Hotwheels has made some amazing models though.

Yes, Hot Wheels tend to do it better, but to the credit of Matchbox, they went bankrupt in 1981.

I didn't even know a Ferrari F50 coupe existed until now; all I saw were convertibles.

Me and my brother had recently began a collecting spree of all the new Hotwheels cars (including many of the elusive 'Treasure Hunt' models) but we have somehow stopped again after collecting about 100 more left-in-packet.

The only thing that has changed is that now when I see somebody open the cardboard packaging I cringe in disgust.

I am kind of young, but most people would say someone my age wouldn't be playing with Hot Wheels anymore. Nope. I still have over 200, and my 17-year-old brother has about 100 or so. My dad has also recently got into it, and he has 8 cars. All three of us occasionally hold tournaments in our big basement, with a classic beat-the-other-guy-to-the-line category, and also a distance category where the car that travels the farthest before stopping wins. Those competitions are using the Hot Wheels orange tracks and some older ones specifically made for that sort of thing, but I also have old city streets and buildings that aren't sold anymore.

:-)
