How exactly does the ERS work in the LMP1 nissan nismo?

Just wondering because I payed zero attention to it during round 4 and I'm wondering if I could have been faster if I had known it were there and how to use it, I had no idea!!!

It's automatic, I believe. Releasing energy in 3rd gear and recovering it under braking.

It came in at a certain speed cant remember exactly but it actually started at the top end of 2nd so the way i always used it was early shift to 3rd to get the full boost. If you didnt you pumped electrical energy into the gear shift.

I never understood why they reserved that last burst. It doesn't really make any difference either at that speed.
