How many cars has GT sold?

I was wondering how many of you, or people you know, have been influenced by a GT game to buy a car they wouldn't have bought otherwise.

When GT1 came out, I was looking for a car to buy, and as a result of playing the game, I bought myself a '91 Prelude VTEC. I would have never even known about the 'lude if it wasn't for GT.

I think this is interesting as it adds a whole new layer to the game developing process and to the dynamics of licensing; many manufacturers are already using custom GT versions to test drive and show off their cars.

Let's hear your experiences.

i always fancied a skyline before i started playing GT games and G3 and 4 made me want one more, shame, even after i get my license itll be a good 5 years before i have a chance at getting insurance on one

The will have been a few people that have been influenced. But as of yet I wouldnt be able to insure the car that I want from the game. That would be either the Lotus Elise, Toyota Supra or a modified Lexus IS200. The Elise would stay standard but the Supra or IS200 wouldnt.

And by then they will be of 10 years old. It just isnt fair, and look at the new skyline, rear wheel drive, they've killed it!

I didn't think they had a '91 VTEC Prelude, thought those started in '92? Does your car have pop up headlights, or is it the next generations styling?

Well it hasn't affected the purchase of my next car although its got to be said I'd be less likely to buy a skyline in the future than before GT. I knew about skylines before, but now thanks to GTs constant overkill I'm a bit sick of em. Although I still like R32s. Same deal with Evos really, although they look too 'bad boy' for me anyway.

I found the exact same thing as you T5-R. When i first got GT2 i loved the r33 and r34 but now i only like the r32. I'll be old enough to start taking lessons in about 7 months and thanks to gt i've pretty much set my mind on a yellow Honda Civic SiR (EQ). If you want to see what i mean click 'my dream car' in my sig.

I doubt very many cars have been sold because of the game, most people play the game because they can't afford the real thing. Those that may have the money'll probably realise that you'd very rarely be able to drive like you do in the game and if you did, your license wouldn't last long. Also, when it comes to actually spending ten of thousands of pounds/dollars I expect people start to look at more practical issues - size, reliability etc.

Personally, I went the other way, I got the game because I wanted to drive the equivalent of my car stupidly! However, I'm starting to think it's not included - Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i '97 - '00. I've had a few searches and couldn't find where it is, so I'm just hoping it'll turn up at some point :scared:

I bought my car (98 Subaru Impreza RS 2.5) back in 98 and most people thought I'd gotten it because of how good the WRX was in the first game. And nobody ever thought of Subaru's as a performance car back then. (around here at least) Funny thing is, I didn't even have a PS1 back then. Shortly afterwards though I had played GT on a friends and of course I was wishing for the turbo.

92 was the first year that the VTEC engines were used in the Preludes (Engine codes H22A1 & H22).

Sold my 'pop-up' Prelude in May last year due to needing a vehicle with more seats (4 kids now). Gutting wasn't the word for it :( :( :(

No, gutted is the word!

Haha yeah. I thought it was ratehr clever of BMW to put their E90 in the game so that ppl had a chance to ''test drive'' them before they actually hit the market. Same with the M5.

Yea- Subaru was NOT known for performance until GT brought attention to the WRX. The local dealer had a 2000 Impreza RS with all the crap (decals, shortshift, exhaust that banged on the body).

Salesperson said they have to be careful who test drove it and that I didn't look like a 'video game kid'. Ha.

Now GT4 has me on the hunt for an old ALFA GTA!

When I first play GT ...I was thinking, are all these cars real?I didn't know many cars(I'm from Mexico)We only have the "BUG" :ouch: ...not really. Then there is this Mitsubishi Lancer Evo...5 years later I'm still saving money.Maybe some day I will afford it.For now I'll just keep playing the game.but if it wasn't for GT I wouldn't know about many great cars ! 👍

While I do have to say that my love for Subaru's has increased somewhat to the GT series, I grew up learning and loving them before the series debuted.

I do really want to get myself a Lancer 1600 now though. Its fun to drive in GT4.

If it was possible i would buy the ZZII, but that will remain a dream

did know it before GT2 or was it 3

I bought a Focus RS which was one oif the best cars in GT concept Tokyo-Geneva :) easily beating the Honda CTR and ITR....

Too bad they really screwed it up in gt4..don't even use it,too much wheelspin and weight is all wrong..this pisses me off I rather not even think about the RS now :( maybe I'll try to make it useable but is going to needs a lot of work sadly
I hate you PD :grumpy:
they screwed up a lot of "road" cars I think in this GT4, the evo8 MR is a loooooottt better in reality I would really want one now and it certainly will be my next car.
Actually now that I know them the "best Motoring international" videos are what will make me buy my next car not GT4, again too much car have weird handling when others are accurate like the Honda CTR....

If it wasn't for Gran Turismo i probably wouldn't be such a massive Nissan Skyline fan like i currently am. :) My Skyline website.

On the 31st of December last year i bought a turbo, 4WD R32 Nissan Skyline (GTS-4) and i absolutely love it to bits. It has the best interior, exterior, engine bay, sound (from the exhaust, not the stereo/CD player), handling, performance and everything else out of every single other car i've ever been in/driven.

I love Skylines so much that i'm starting to save up for a second Skyline (non turbo R32 GTS-25 coupe) and once i own that (hopefully before Christmas this year) the R32 GT-R will be next on the list. :D :) Eventually i will have three (or more) Skylines - before 2008 if all goes according to plan. :)

Unfortunately my current car has only ever been in Gran Turismo 2, and even then it was the coupe version. :(

Prior to GT4, I had narrowed my new car search down to the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Now, I am including the Subaru Legacy GT - thanks strictly to the game!

ps. Years ago - I tried to buy a new Datsun 2000 (Fairlady 2000), but I couldn't get a loan approved since I hadn't yet established my credit. What a shame. At least I get to drive one now - thanks to GT4.

Pete.

I bought a Focus RS...

All we get here in the states is the 170hp Zetec in the SVT. '04 was the last year and all FORD has now is the 150hp sedan. :yuck:

The ST170 in the game is close, but it's limited to 2 colors AND is only available in bluw and black. AND GT4 says it has 184hp. Hmmm...

But I'd get into much more trouble with the RS!

Ok heres my dream car and the BTCC has just confirmed it more then the Supra, Elise and IS200. Its the Honda Integra (Acura Integra for American car dealers). They have looked nice since Honda started making them and I had a shell of it for my remote control car I used to race. But now the Team Halfords/ Team Dynamics have changed from the Civic which they were racing last year to this years Integra. Its a damn shame that the makers of GT dont ever put the BTCC cars in there games.

BTCC = British Touring Car Championship.

What happened to the Ford Focus RS8?? A USA-only, Cammer-V8 engined, rear-wheel drive Focus, with more horses in the front than the works rally car??

I remember an article in a car mag, around the time that GT2 had come out, that mentioned 3 oil rig workers playing the game while on shift, then when their tour was up coming onshore and buying Aston Martin DB7s - because they loved them so much in the game.

GT has influenced me on what car i want to own, but like many of us it will be a while before i'll get insured on the car i want, Toyota Supra RZ 👍

Now that i am doing my research for my next car,i was intended either on Golf Gti,or the Ctr.So after buying the game,i went to arcade mode, took a CTR,and heard the sound of it.One of the most realistic sounds in the whole game,it is a complete recording, without any electronical intervals through the powerband. Then i was astonished from the way that the car was responding,so the first car that i bought was the CTR.I modified it with some suspension, lsd and some slicks, and i couldnt stop myself from turning around the laguna seca...Awesome turning,no understeer, exceptional sound, gearbox, accuracy, and well u get the point. So last week i took a (real) Ctr,for a test drive...Whoaaa........
PS:I dont need to mention that if u drive a Golf after the CTR,u will be completely dissapointed (from the steering, not the luxury...)...Type-R ,i am in love 👍

speak for yourself, those in the know have been aware of Subaru performance models a lot longer, always wanted a 1992 era Legacy 4cam turbo (207bhp) the car that Colin Mcrae first drove for them, they even did it as an estate ... you can pick these up in the UK for about £2k now , and the first impreza turbo's came out in 1994

IlfordDave,
My original comment was in regards to the U.S.A. I remember seeing Colin running the Legacy Back in the early 90's and A buddy of mine had a GL back in the 70's that was great for running around in. But the popularity of Subaru's jumped leaps and bounds here in the U.S. once the RS came out in 98. Coincidently about the same time GT was taking off. Then the WRX becoming available in the U.S. really boosted it in the (U.S.) publics eye.

Subaru performance models were a Favourite with the motoring press here in the UK from the early 1990's especially with the staff of the much missed "Performance Car" magazine.

The old Lombard RAC rally route used to pass near my school back then, saw them using one of the Estates pass by, it was running as a back up car ......

I agree that the GT series awakened an interest in many cars that were overlooked in some markets

Ditto- I forget ithe internet is international. :dunce:

The ONLY performance car Subaru US had in the early 90's was the SVX. Not much performance there. There were a few guys using Legacy 2.0 turbos in place of the 2.5 engines in the Impreza RS.

Now that Focus RS8... Ford Racing makes a kit to turn the Focus from FF to FR. No factory effort for a complete car.

edit- Performance Car is gone? Crap. The only mag I was willing to pay $6 for...

went years ago, I still have the last issue some where, it merged with "Car" magazine .... a bit off topic I know .... but was more like it was swallowed up and "Car" magazine continued on as it has always been, however some of the team from "Performance Car" started a new magazine called "Evo" a few years back, and this is very much in the came mould as "Performance Car" and is now a must read for me every month.

ps excuse any errors please its difficult to type at minute as I droped my bike on friday and have my left hand bandaged up
