I guess this is the right thread for my question.

So I got one of these [CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory], but when I installed it my computer didn't recognize it, it just...froze. So then I tried taking out my old 512MB stick and just have the 1GB one by itself, but it still won't recognize it. Does anyone know why it's not working?

A friend told me it might have something to do with my motherboard. Here's what I'm working with:

its not good to try and mix and match memory. like that PC3200 with a PC2700.

I have a little over 4GB of ram.

Yeah, this is what I've heard. I was planning on tossing out the 512MB one and just have the 1GB stick in there (or maybe even add another 1GB)...that is, if I can get it to work.

Jesus, 4GB? That's crazy.

I guess no one knows why my RAM stick is not working. :(

why more than 4? Windows can only handle 4. Add to that the fact that windows makes extremely inefficient use of anything more than ~1.5-2 gigs

Matched pairs are your best friend. Get 2 sticks of identical ram and you'll get double the ram performance out of it since they'll run in dual channel mode... or something like that.
