BOTH.we had a class, found out her IM name form a friend over summer, started taking on the net, been going "up" form there

she probably went with friends. My friend is wallowing in self pity, as UI stated above.

Go. If you see her, talk to her for a while. It sounds like you know her well enough that you don't need an opening line. In the middle of the conversation, mention that you were supposed to go with one of your friends, but he's a pain. Blow that part off like it doesn't matter. See how she reacts, then depending on what she says, casually ask her if she wants to go to the next game. If you think you can be bolder than that, mention that you were going to go to... say a movie tommorrow, ask her if she wants to come. If she says no, it doesn't matter, you were already going and it's no sweat to you. You need to remember that this girl is no cooler than you underneath. I wish that I had the body of knowledge I have now, when I was your age.
She's just as unsure as you are, a few well placed compliments, and when she goes home, if she thinks about something you said once, and it causes her to smile, you'll be the one she's on the IM saying PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
