Hey, that's a really good idea. That would help me learn alot on whatengine parts do and everything. I just can't wait to learn more about car engines and be able to fix breakdowns and install parts. :)

I can do most stuff that just involves bolting stuff together. I don't have the shop to do it, though. I've done simple electrical stuff like installing a tach, for instance, as well.

Fabrication and the like are beyond me, though, but I'm good at fabricating parts for models, so I figure I won't be too bad at doing it in large scale.

I know nothing compare to some of you guys. I do know alittle but not much. I am learning everyday by reading forums and magizines, that is how i learn.

I know NOTHING! :(

hey speedkrazy620 you should just get an old lawn mower engine. try getting a four stroke one though. thats how i started to get into some engines.

I've been thinking about doing that, but do you know of any good books or manuals to help me get started with it? Thanks alot. PM me if you don't mind.

the best manual is just get out your tools and go at it.
do it slowly and carefully and taking note of where and how everything goes. engines arnt really that complicated and its only a mower engine so if you make a mistake dont worry about it. if you were to build an engine properly then you would need to know the specs, clearances and torque settings. but dont worry about them on a mower engine intill youve learnt the basics

Oh ya and also, I was thinking about setting up a spot in my basement to do this. Is this more of an outdoor project? I wasn't sure if I should do it indoors because of the oil/gasoline.

if its a 4 stroke engine (recomended) drain the oil prior to taking it to your basement.
if it 2 stroke there is no oil so you just take it too your basement straight away.
it still may stink abit, and you will stilll get oily hands.
BTW 2 stroke is easier, but 4 stroke is like car engines

from a mower, but 4 stroke mower engine will be harder to find. maybe get a small car engine like a 3 cylinder diahatsu engine or something. although that will still be a fair bit bigger than a mower engine.
i dont know where you will find these motors, maybe a mower shop or for the car engine a wreaking yard

I dont think I can fit a large engine like that in my basement, but i think i'll start with a regular 2 stroke, and see how that goes. But what's the smallest 4 stroke I can find?

you can get very small 4 strokes but they are harder to find. i have seen a 4 stroke for RC cars, whipper snippers, mowers etc

I'm looking all over the internet right now. Can't fine any. I've found this really small Honda engine, but it looked so nice i'd be afraid to touch it. lol

I don't know a howling fart about cars. And that is starting to be a real problem, because my wife just persuaded me, that we need one. So I'm walking around at the dealers saying, hmm and right and kicking the tires. :D

That's a reason why I wanna learn early

you never stop learning, but if you know the basics you can do most things
