Hi, GTPlanet.

For those of you who may not know my tastes in gaming, I don't really care for online play. I mean, you have to connect online, look for someone online to play against, and then try to play as long as you can for the duration of the match. Plus, I don't think I can deal with multiplayer options involving more than one person with another PS2. I mean, to me, just because a game supports more than 2 players via phone line or broadband doesn't mean the game will be highly a favorite like most of what "X-Play" shows. For example, you got games like Topspin, Planetside, Final Fantasy XI, and stuff. All of which have online play. And I mean, just because of the online element doesn't make a game all that good. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution was a kick-ass game even though you can only challenge people to a 2-player game in the house.

So it brings me to this. If Polyphony Digital released an online-only game (a PC example: Half-Life CounterStrike), would it sell well, or would it be a fiasco (total failure)? I'll start.

I'm not pulling any punches, but I will pretend that I am really into online gaming and that I love to play games against people around Houston and around the world. This "Gran Turismo Online" game would be different. Instead of a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) and a team-based shooter, this is... a racing game. But this is a wonderful one at that. I can imagine racing Grand Valley or New York with five of my buddies. We're all racing like crazy, but as we know, to go to a race, you have to go online. Perchance, online leauges can be forged, even with custom-made leauges that may allow many typesof car to race. For example, drivetrain, aspiration, tuning, and even racing cars. Five races? Seven races? Ten races? Can be configured. Who knows? Maybe some race tracks may be exclusive to this game, which will make some people want to have them in GT5.

But to me, the only PS2 game I have that has online capabilities is "NCAA Football 2004." In this game, you can most likely take college rivalries online. I mean, for example. LaBounti mentioned he is an Ohio State fan, so if he had the game, he could challenge someone who represented Michigan for the classic Ohio State/Michigan game. Or maybe he could play for Illibuck (forgot the rival team for this game). But, if there was a GT exclusive to online play, it will mean that online charges will apply, and it will probably mean that if you wanted to go racing, it would be like me playing "Counterstrike." I'd have to log on to play.

Do you think an online-exclusive version of GT would be a wonderful idea or a fiasco?

Online Only i think wouldn't sell half as much as a offline GT game.
I personally wouldn't like it if it were online only but i would still get it.

I don't like the idea of online only as much as I don't like the idea as offline only, but it wouldn't be a disaster. If there was a GT Online and a stand alone offline GT I would go for the online one as long as the game progress was as well structured as the single player game. As for online charges, thats no problem for me, I already have broadband and Sony don't charge for use of PS2 online so it's just a case of getting my isp to setup a PS2 connection which I think will only be a fiver more per month which is hardly bank busting. And logging on to play a game isn't a problem either, you have to log on to visit this site which everyone here manges with minimum fuss.

It will be stupid if you ask me, because it will not be as maintream as other GT games of the past. Besides only the very few who have online capability. And it would be very expensive for people who use this capablity (monthly fees and charges) every time you play GT, especially on those long endurance races, which will equal to more $$$$$$ extra than playing alone.

Online gaming is a great idea to interact other players and gamers, but for those who can't afford it (like me), it will be plain stupid, PD will lose a lot of $$$$$$$.

You say it will be expensive, but it won't, going online is cheap now, at least it's cheap over here, I can get my PS2 online for an extra £5 per month for unlimited use.

Cheap over here? I can't even get broadband where I live so theres no hope of me playing even GT4 online.

I think it's still far too early to be talking about online-only Gran Turismo games, in fact online-only games in general.

Wait until the majority of gamers have access to cheap, fast internet connections and only then might it be financially viable for games companies to release online exclusives.

Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later... :)

Yep, it's cheap £15 per month for unlimited access, I wouldn't call that expensive.

£15 per month is fine if you live in a city and can actually make use of it...

Broadband is by no means available to all yet.

I guess you just get used to everyone around you having it when your in a big city.

Lucky for you Brits out there. Here in the US, having something online can cost right aboutmore than US$30 a month then add a broadband (necessary for PS2) will add more $$$$ for your headache. :grumpy:

I'd really like to put online capability to my ver 1 PS2, but way too ****** expensive.

In sweden they get the best connections, not sure what the max is but I've read about 10mb/s speeds.

Japan has pretty awesome connections, similar to Sweden by the seems of things. Apparently 1 in 4 houses have 10mb/s or more, can't remember the exact figure. 1 in 10 UK homes have broadband, with the average being 512kb/s or less! We suck.

The thing is, the UK isn't that bad, it's just one or two other places are fantastic, were better than loads of places for internet connections.

John, you mentioned VF4 evo, the best fighting game out. Just thought I'd say well done, have a cookie. Shame VF4 evo aint online, I'd like to kick your ass on it :)

online only GT would be pointless, GT4 has online play anyway.

Yeah i guess. I have too many problems with this country.

If GT4 was online only then they wouldn't be getting $130 from me for the game.

As i've said countless times, broadband is far too expensive for low income families like mine. :(

Yeah sorry haven't commented on the actual topic yet:

Online only for GT4 would suck imo. By all means, if it can be done well, an online GT game would probably be pretty good, but not GT4 and not until (as everyone seems to agree) broadband becomes more widely available and cheaper.

Yeah online only GT would be crap.

I mean with Midtown Madness 2 (laugh if you want:p ) online play was SO awsome!!!

I loved racing around the cities with my friends but somtimes I just wanted to drive around in a relaxed fashion by myself some times :)

You need both!!!!:)

VF4 Evolution? Kicking my ass? Not when I sick Kage on you!

Any more about an online-only GT? To me, I thought Counterstrike would be cool until I learned it was online-only. Just imagine what such a scenario would do for GT...

Lag would suck. I'd hate to be racing online and have it keep skipping. And then not being able to go back to offline play without lag would suck even more.

Why would you have to pay an extra £5 per month? If you have a router you can have as many connections as you want, or you could even share your connection with ICS through your pc.

There is already a MMO Racing Game out. Its by Genki and its called Shutoko Battle Online. Its only available in Japan (i tried to play it when it came out last summer but everything was in Japanese) and its basically like Tokyo Extreme Racer except online.

Of course I never really liked the physics in the Genki games so a Gran Turismo Online game would be the greatest game in the world. I would probably sell my soul to play a Gran Turismo Online game.

Online only GT Game wouldn't be very good in my opinion.
Like I said in another thread the only part about online I'm looking foward to is getting the hard drive and (hopefully) downloading cars, tracks and features like additional wheels .

I'm not too technical with all this kind of thing, do you know any sites that offer info on all this?
