Hi, GTPlanet.
For those of you who may not know my tastes in gaming, I don't really care for online play. I mean, you have to connect online, look for someone online to play against, and then try to play as long as you can for the duration of the match. Plus, I don't think I can deal with multiplayer options involving more than one person with another PS2. I mean, to me, just because a game supports more than 2 players via phone line or broadband doesn't mean the game will be highly a favorite like most of what "X-Play" shows. For example, you got games like Topspin, Planetside, Final Fantasy XI, and stuff. All of which have online play. And I mean, just because of the online element doesn't make a game all that good. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution was a kick-ass game even though you can only challenge people to a 2-player game in the house.
So it brings me to this. If Polyphony Digital released an online-only game (a PC example: Half-Life CounterStrike), would it sell well, or would it be a fiasco (total failure)? I'll start.
I'm not pulling any punches, but I will pretend that I am really into online gaming and that I love to play games against people around Houston and around the world. This "Gran Turismo Online" game would be different. Instead of a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) and a team-based shooter, this is... a racing game. But this is a wonderful one at that. I can imagine racing Grand Valley or New York with five of my buddies. We're all racing like crazy, but as we know, to go to a race, you have to go online. Perchance, online leauges can be forged, even with custom-made leauges that may allow many typesof car to race. For example, drivetrain, aspiration, tuning, and even racing cars. Five races? Seven races? Ten races? Can be configured. Who knows? Maybe some race tracks may be exclusive to this game, which will make some people want to have them in GT5.
But to me, the only PS2 game I have that has online capabilities is "NCAA Football 2004." In this game, you can most likely take college rivalries online. I mean, for example. LaBounti mentioned he is an Ohio State fan, so if he had the game, he could challenge someone who represented Michigan for the classic Ohio State/Michigan game. Or maybe he could play for Illibuck (forgot the rival team for this game). But, if there was a GT exclusive to online play, it will mean that online charges will apply, and it will probably mean that if you wanted to go racing, it would be like me playing "Counterstrike." I'd have to log on to play.
Do you think an online-exclusive version of GT would be a wonderful idea or a fiasco?
