Hp touch pad is now $99 for the 16gb. I'm curious why anyone would want one now that hp killed it and there won't be any updates or Apps?

Apparently they are continuing software support, but I can't see any developers putting money into making apps for a device that is no longer sold.

How are they continuing software support?
I think webos updates.
For $99 it seems ok, but not sure what use it has now.

Mmm, just because its developers won't be putting anything into it doesn't mean it won't be a nice $99 portable web browser for the next couple years if you can't afford a full-priced tablet. Frankly, the majority of my iPad use is just for Safari and Reeder.

I was thinking about it for my mom. We would leave it upstairs for her to use it for web and email. But don't know who has it here.

My bedroom lamp just broke just after midnight. So I need a new one.

Touch pad?

I believe it will not have some of the functions other tablets have, like comparing the iPod touch to the iPhone or iPad.

I know my dad is interested in getting one of these, but I didn't know HP had killed it. I shall let him know.

Where is it $99? It's still around £400 in the UK so it might be worth importing.

The majority of my iPad use is GTP browsing. :p

And I'd buy it if I wanted a no-frills tablet for web browsing.

The TouchPad was really good but HP is just killing it. They dropped it to 99$ to pretty much get rid of it.

Also the Pre 3 launch is canceled, because, of course, they are discontinuing WebOS.

When i went to work i got one for 148 for the 32GB vesion.

Me being the geek that i am, I will see if i can get windows 7 to work on it.

Thing is its not all that good a deal because your buying into a dead OS which will pretty much be never updated and will have no app support further down the line.

If you don't mind though a just want a cheap device to do the basics then suppose its reasonable.

I bet in the UK we won't get the deal anyway (rip off as usual) and if they lower it it certainly won't be 60 quid ish! EDIT - Our sales price seems to be around £90 which is still double the US price.

Best value for a digital picture frame at the very least - IPS displays have nice colors and viewing angles.

My friend has picked up a couple of these for him to use for work, and I'm trying to pick up one for putting a digital portfolio on.

But since Team TouchDroid is trieing to add android O/S on to the touchpad, if can get it to work, best cheap tablet for those who got it, even if you get no warrenty support.

Honestly, I feel WebOS is better for the most part than Android. At least on tablets. It just works very well from what I've seen.

They were on sale here for £89 as of this morning. And completely sold out within an hour. :(

+1.

WebOS is a great OS. It also actually runs native code vs Javascript that unfortunately Android uses to run everything. The 3D gaming offerings on WebOS still kill anything that is on Android.

I too tired to pick up one of these but they sold in an hour.

The HP one is total fail it lasted for no time at all. Yes it may be cheap, but don't expect any updates or cool stuff. iPad and the HTC ones with android are only way to go

Cool opinion bro.

WebOS is really solid from the time I played around with it in the store.

I'm not saying it's bad it just won't last. iPad will constantly have new stuff and be integrated into the computers, apple tv, etc. The HP one I dont think there making them anymore so there obviously not going to spend lots of time on making new updates and stuff for something that will make them no money

For those of you that are wondering, the TouchPad got killed by HP partly because the developers got angry at the weak hardware (WebOS runs two times faster on the iPad) and partly because during the development, the entire company was messed up (from a business point). I just hope they open source it so I can run it on my Mac.

This will almost certainly be able to be loaded with the Android OS - hardware is hardware - I'd be surprised if this wasn't out already, actually.

.... Is it possible to put Linux or a Unix variant in it? If so, I'll be sold on it!

I think it could be possible. Try hacknmod or instructables, they might have something cracked on there.

The problem, as I've read it, is that due to it's discontinuation the developers are not willing to produce the apps for it as the client base will be relatively small. If there are not too many good apps for it then nobody will buy it (at full price) over an iPad which has plenty. It's a catch 22 scenario.

For the price, 89quid, I'd have one just as a mobile computing platform, and I'd get my office IT developers to write the apps I needed for me. :sly:

Edit: Here you go Submerged. How to install Ubuntu Linux on a HP Touchpad

Well WebOS runs off a linux kernal, so I can't see why not.
Main issue is the cpu, will linux have the ability to run on it.

Cheers about finding out on the Linux question.

I didn't get any of the tablets though... that was disappointing.

However it does highlight something interesting for businesses. It shows that there is a demand for tablet computing, once the price is low enough that people are willing to take a risk on it. I mean, nearly 500 quid for the iPad is far too much for what you get and the features.

$99 dollars in America and it gets sold out, even though the hardware and software is nowhere near as good as the iPad? Wow, there must be something there. Someone online commented on tablet computing being more of a Nintendo DS product than a luxury item as they are designed to be portable, used anywhere and be used by idiots. Therefore this would mean that if the tablet was at a relatively low price (100 dollars, lets say) then the middle to rich families wouldn't mind buying more than one of them to allow their kids to view webpages while in a communal room, rather than stuck behind a laptop or desktop computer away from the communal room.

Additionally, with the lower price of the HP tablet, its starting to take the customers away from the e-reader's market as well!

The touchpads hardware is better than the ipads

Ipad2 wifi has the following

1Ghz dual core Apple A5 CPU
512MB RAM
16, 32, 64GB SSD Storage
9.7" LCD @ 1024x768
Multi-touch touch screen
PowerVR SGX543MP GPU
headset controls
proximity and ambient light sensors
3-axis gyroscope
microphone
magnetometer
accelerometer
Video recording, VGA up to 30 frame/s with audio, VGA-quality still camera, 0.3 MP.
Video recording, 960×720 up to 30 frame/s with audio, 960×720 still camera with 5× digital zoom, 0.7 MP.
Capacitive touchscreen
Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n)
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

The touchpad has
1.2Ghz Qualcomm S3 APQ8060 CPU
1GB RAM
16 or 32GB SSD Stroage
9.7" LCD @ 1024x768
Multi-touch touch screen
Qualcomm Adreno 220 core CPU
Internal stereo speakers with Beats Audio
3.5mm stereo jack for headset / headphone / microphone
vibration motor
Capacitive Multi-touch screen
microphone
ambient light sensor
Accelerometer
Gyroscope
Magnetometer (compass)
1.3 MP HD front-facing

The touchpad has better hardware then the apple ipad so Biobunnys comment on the weak hardware is odd since it had 2x more ram, a faster cpu and HP encoruage homebrew apps, unlike apple where you need to jailbreak the ipad to install or even test them.

Hmmm, I need to try and find that original comment somewhere online that apparently stated that the designers of the software for the HP pad was a bit annoyed that the iPad hardware could run their system faster than the actual HP pad.

But then, what you've just said seemed to have totally contradicted that.....

err..nevermind

Although, I am shocked about the ipad being able to run WebOS better than the Touchpad could and from what I read, it seems like WebOS on the Touchpad was a botch job or sorts..

It is so much more than just pure CPU cycle speed. Remember the Pentium 4 vs Athlon/ Athlon 64 days? Pentium 4 usually had a higher CPU speed, so it MUST be faster than an AMD Athlon, right?
