It's funny that you should say that, I was quite seriously thinking of getting a WRX wagon, they're a stupidly cheap way of gettin in on that turbo Subie action with practicality to boot, that or a normal 4 door.

But with so many horror stories of weak drive lines it's a bit of a risky move.

That's why I think you should have a look at third generation Legacy GT-Bs. Very quick, and pretty reliable as well.

Maybe I should just shut up about Subarus now.

Haha no that's quite alright, it could well be worth looking into.

My main concern however is just how cheap they all are, there's a twin turbo model for sale for just 2.5k.. still, I'll do more research over the next week as I salvage the good bits from the Maxima.

Found an auto 4 door skyline for 1k, automatic and NA but I can use my coupe

It's official, the R33's restoration to perfect mechanical condition with a total cost of $3,261 is complete

The final pieces of the puzzle were an O2 sensor, exhaust gasket and rocker cover gasket which were all completed last night.

The next step will be installing progressive springs and a new rear sway bar!

In other news the XR8 ute is my new daily driver and I'm moving house this week.. unfortunately the new house's driveway limits how low my car can go, as of now there's only a fist worth of clearance so I can only wind out 30mm or so.

Still, this house is located near Mt Tiger which saves me a 30 km journey every day to go driving there and it means I can have unlimited fibre Internet!

So this just happened...

That is my wheel nut... with my stud still inside it..

I lent my car to a friend for the day, no harm done I thought - the next day I needed to be in Auckland, 200 odd kilometers away so I figured I'd leave the night before and stay with a friend..

I live on a large hill now so the road to town is tight and winding - as I let off the throttle I heard a bizarre banging noise, so I stopped and rearranged my tools in the back - fixed! ... or not. 20 kilometers later I turn off my radio and let off the throttle and hear it again - at this point I think it's my differential so I pull over to inspect my car.

I lightly pull my wheel and discover it's loose, confused I get my lock nut key and attempt to tighten the bolt.. when the nut immediately falls off.... while still attached to the stud....

Moral of the story - never lend your car to anyone or it will come back with bizarre damage that you can't fathom how it happened

That really sucks dude. At least you took notice quickly and figured out what was going on. I don't think I could trust anyone with my car except my mom lol.

I think three weeks ago, I was reconnecting the wires on my driver side harness because some of the wires got unattached. Well I was sleepy that night and forgot to tighten my lug nuts. Was driving and was hearing this bizarre noise and figured out it was because I didn't tighten the lug nuts.

Thank God I didn't ignore and kept driving

Well that can't be common.

That sucks bro, luckily you found it quickly. 👍

Spooky, I was just in your 240 thread when you replied!

Yeah, at first I thought my diff had exploded because it was such a bizarre noise  thankfully it's nothing that serious

Too right! usually I have Moog's music blasting at full volume when driving =P so it was very I could notice it over my mad beats yo.. clearly don't have enough bass

So on the 2nd of next month there's a MightyCarMods meet in Auckland, I've been asked if I'll go by a good friend of mine and as much as I wanted to refuse she was most insistent....

So... now I'm taking my Skyline with its mismatching bonnet and quarter panels, massive fart can that can wake an entire neighbourhood with a ride height that could challenge some Foresters and rims that look abhorrent (even when the chrome is plastidipped) and parking it next to amazing pristine sports cars (If the McM videos are anything to go by) and then stand around awkwardly because I'm way to shy in person to go and approach people about their cars..

What a fun afternoon that's gonna be! perhaps I'll try and find a nice tree in the corner to park under in an attempt to hide my car so nobody notices me

I could bring my Accord with its big exhaust, peeling clearcoat and a poorly painted spoiler to make you feel better about your R33.

 Sounds like a plan =P

I've convinced my friend to come in his R33 we've been rebuilding for the past couple months so I might just hang around that and pretend I don't know who's mine is!

In other news, wheel stud has been replaced but in doing so I've discovered the only thing making my handbrake work was the amount of rust on the inside of the rear disc... so tomorrow I'm adjusting the cable travel so I can do more skids!

In a safe and controlled manner and environment.

Down the ex-neighbor's driveway?

Oh god you read my mind.. you know she tried one last time to claim that I was doing "wheelies" down the gravel road? absolutely unbelievable...

I found myself just aimlessly staring at my car so I thought I'd do something more productive and update this thread.

I had a great time at the MCM meet in Auckland and couldn't have asked for a better first experience!

I've been working on little things here and there, beating and painting panels and repairing small pieces of damaged trim - frankly the car is just about done as far as the small affordable stuff goes.

This is where the nasty stuff begins.. Transmission, Suspension, Bracing, Rims, Tyres..

I've also decided that I'm going to source a genuine JDM GT-R bumper and wing (Removing logos, naturally) before I take it to a paint booth.

I was going to try my hand at painting it on the drive way but.. I think I'll go to a professional booth and just see if they'll humour me and let me do it there if I buy the paint through them.

Anywho, car is still going strong and just clicked over 240K, here's to another 60!

I love the R33 GTR bumper, should look awesome 👍.

It's definitely a good idea using a professional's booth and equipment too. You'll have a great paint job and get to do it yourself. Thats a win-win! Assuming they let you do it that is

I agree, and I'd much prefer having the fog lights and indicator lower down rather than where they are on the GTS Skylines - but the key thing for me is that it doesn't trick anyone into thinking it's a GT-R. I'd hate for anyone to think I'm a liar.

So the GTR engraving on the wing will be filled in and the badge from the front grille removed 👍

I'm also tracking down some Nismo Clear Side Repeaters, the bicycle look isn't doing it for me

I used to be good friends with the son of a professional painter, I may drop by and call in a favour

We so excited, because it's Friday, Friday - despite being Tuesday.

Painting gear, check

Bucket seat, (Despite not needing one at all) check

And most important of all

Boost?

Check, oh how I've longed to check that one off.

And if you didn't read that title in the professors voice, I'm judging you extra hard right now.

I didn't realize it was an NA.

It'll look good once you sort the paint. 👍

 Turbocharged R33's go for 10 grand+ if they're a manual. I had the choice between 200 horse power and manual or 280 and auto for my price range. I chose the former.

Besides which, if I got one turbocharged from the factory I'd still end up spending bucket loads on supporting mods for more power so if I can start from a clean base I can buy what I need as I go and I get a nice choice of turbos (This one comes from an ex of my friend in Auckland that builds racing engines that are shipped around the world, this was surplus to requirement so my friend got it for me cheap. Going to be upgrading the internals in the next few weeks as I source all my supporting items)

I'm going to miss the immediate feeling of NA but, it's time to move on.

I thought you got lucky.

You'll have to visit your most favoritest person and do some "wheelies" with your mad turbo setup.

Nah, once the turbo goes on my dirt road shenanigans must come to an end. Too many of my friends have melted their turbos inhaling dust.

I still got lucky, manual R33 coupes (NA) still go for 5k - if they're going for less than that there's going to be some big issues.

Skylines are rather expensive here in NZ. I'm in the process of getting a CL1 Accord Euro R and I can get one for $8k and they're a much newer car with lower mileage.

Yeah.. I mean I don't have anything against Honda's, in fact I'd probably happily drive a civic (Though I'd die of shame if it was fitted with a fart can like my Skylines) but I never truly feel comfortable in a FWD car - there's just something about the idea of putting all your power through the same tyres that have to handle cornering as well that makes me feel uneasy.

But the Prelude and the Accord Euro R are really attractive looking cars 👍

I'm actually debating a Prelude or an AW11 for my new daily (because daily driving a car with a turbo that's capable of 300 KW seems pretty daft) but we'll see - I still fancy the Legacy/Imprezza wagons.

I wish I wasn't so indecisive.. not only do I have to pick another car but I've also got an unlimited colour pallet to pick from for painting my R33..

A year ago I would've said something similar to you, having owned and driven a RWD car for 3 years. But that's changed since I've had my Accord. FWDs can be a lot of fun when you drive them until you get wild torque steer (something an Euro R shouldn't suffer from  ). Although I'm still going to get a S2000 in the next couple of years to go in the garage with the Euro R.

I'd be inclined to say a BB9 Prelude would make a very good DD. I've driven a few and they're really quite nice, espicially if you're lucky enough to find a Type S.

There's a silver on black rims (akin to a Rays CE28N) R33 GTSt doing the rounds in Nelson that looks very nice, I'll see if I can get a photo of it next time I see it. 👍

I suppose my issue is that for the most part I've driven more economy oriented FWD cars, (Maxima, AE92, Civic, Bluebird, Sunny etc) but I haven't had a nice sporty (and manual) FWD car, so perhaps my view will change as I try new things.

Personally I'm more partial to the fourth gen preludes, there's something about the styling that just makes me feel good inside.

My step-uncle crashed his (4th gen prelude) on his way to pick me up from after school care.. he drove it under a bus..
So since it was just sitting in our garage I used to go and "drive" it when I was like 7

The next year I saw Fast and Furious 1, started driving the 69 Mini and became obsessed with cars ever since.

So the 4th gen prelude holds a special place in my heart for that reason - so I may pick one up for nostalgia's sake.

The Skyline sounds good! I do love Silver and black R33s, there's just such a simple beauty to them. I wouldn't do it myself though - I want my car to really pop, visually - to go with the power. Looking forward to the pics if you can manage it 👍

You'll have to take my Euro R for a spin when I get it (most likely buying in Auckland). 👍

Just make sure you get one with an H22A, no point in wasting time with any of the other Prelude's.

Paint it pink! It'll look daft but at least it'll pop.

Y'know, I was seriously considering Orange after being offered 8 litres of Ford Escort Orange.

Unfortunately.. the paint was dud =[ but I got really keen on the idea so I was gauging interest.

I decided to change my plans after my friend threatened to begin calling me the "Annoying Orange" if I paint it and keep my current exhaust set up

Orange could work. What about Active Red or Lightning Yellow (keeping within the same make)? I reckon a gloss red could look quite cool.

EDIT: What about Lime Rock Green from Honda? That would look awesome on a R33 and it'll be very unique.

Stop making this harder for me you monster!!

I do adore deep crimson reds, I saw one in Auckland and adored it~ but I think I need to just pick a colour and dedicate to it or I'll be forever changing my mind.

Just ask for some liters of Generic colour paint. It'll make the choice easy.
