How many active liquor licenses are in the United states.

Essentially how many bars/nightclubs/restaurants are there that serve liquor.

I can't find the answer anywhere.

You probably aren't going to either. I don't think that information is documented on the web, if at all. Why do you even need it?

I'm pretty sure it is published somewhere. Its a statistic in a very lucrative business. And I just need to know.

If any numbers are even published, you'll probably have to compile it yourself by searching through each state's liquor control board for the total licenses issued.

Liquor licenses are issued state by state, and various types exist. For example, Florida has three types. There is a beer & wine license, unlimited in number, which is for stores, bars, or restaurants, and of course only allows beer and wine, no hard liquor. Next up is a license for restaurants for on-premise consumption, unlimited in number, but the business must have 51% of sales as food. Finally there is the quota license, limited to one per 7500 population in each county. If you want one, you must purchase it from someone who no longer needs it or is willing to make some money giving it up, or entrer a drawing with the state for new licenses that may be allowed by population growth. Premises covered by these licenses include bars, package stores, and restaurants, with either on-premise consumption or package sales, and no requirement for other sales.

I can find no information on how many of the quota licenses there are, though.

I did find this site which seems to be a place that tracks availability of licenses, but maybe not toal numbers.

Why do you need to know? School report or something? Or do you just want to know, ie, you're curious?

I've not looked into it myself, but I'd think you'd have to look it up state by state or possibly town by town. I'd think they have to be public records. Start by asking someone in your local government.

And when you find the answer, post it somewhere to save somebody else the trouble of having to repeat the effort.
