I *finally* bought a new car.

I'll disagree in this particular instance. $4k won't buy you much in an Import but on a lazy V8 with an aftermarket that rivals the Civic it will buy more than you think. I happen to know that $4k on this particular engine will produce as much bhp as a 6psi forced induction device. Throwing on just this supercharger kit will not only put undesired strain on the aging engine but it won't work well with the stock injectors, exhaust, intake, and ECU. Unless this kit comes with the aformentioned equipment then its frankly worthless. The best thing this car could have is a top-end rebuild with some good NA tuning. I've delt with the the 4.6L V8, I'm fairly comfortable making my statement. 👍

My personal opinion is that forced induction should happen after at least a basic level of NA tuning. Your engine will thank you in return.

Awesome car MistaX. Mustangs are probly my faveorite car. Skrew the haters in here. Personally I want a 5.0 mustange preferably around a 91.

I completely agree. Ford's modular design leaves a lot to be desired until later in it's life, however the aftermarket has livened things up a bit. A good NA build-up wouldn't cost too much money, that is if you are looking to do it on the cheap. Jegs and Summit both have dedicated sections to the old 5.0L and the current 4.6L engines, and you are bound to find what you are looking for. As with most American V8s of the era, it is all about getting fresh-air in and the exhaust out, so IMO, the best things you can do are going to be what I mentioned before. In case we forgot:

- New air-intake (less than $400 in most cases, check Ford Racing)
- New Throttle body (should be less than $500-800, depends)
- Power Programmer (usually around $400)
- Header-to-muffler exhaust kit (I'm assuming the Flowmaster 40s didn't include the whole system as the previous owner should have done, usually a bit more than $500 for the whole kit)

That should be good for a little more than $2000, and should get you somewhere around an extra 60-80 or so BHP (I haven't kept up on Ford figures in a while...), as I would be looking to get the car as close as possible to 300 crank BHP, that is if you are looking for mods.

But even then, the car is fine stock. Sure, it isn't the fastest thing on the road, but it is a helluva lot of fun, and thats really all that matters...

Don't forget with a little more money you can get some injectors, pullies + belts, and some good heads. Those in conjuction with the things you mentioned could easily bring a +100~120bhp total gain. Suddenly your anemic 215bhp becomes more than the new '05-07 Mustang GT ('05-07 has 300bhp). And I suspect more than the new GT's 320lb.ft. torque output as well. :sly: 👍

Fellows, we're talking about John Bergin here... with the purchase of said car, he's actually too broke to a) insure it, and b) put gas in it.

So don't bother trying to come up with ways to make it faster... for now. :p

That $2K package is probably worth less than 40 hp at the wheels.

All the intake/exhaust tuning you can imagine will do nothing for the awful 2v heads. A power programmer is worth 15-20 hp tops.

Boost, on the other hand, effectively wipes out head inefficiencies.

c) doesn't even have the proper tools to change his own oil.

Let alone register it. We should start a pool on when he actually gets the car on the road. I come home for Spring Break on March 9 - $10 says he's not driving it by then.

I don't think anyone wants to bet against that since it's probably going to happen.

You two are saying the same thing just in two different ways, re-read what's quoted in bold. He's talking about CRANK bhp and you are talking hp to the WHEELS. That's two different measurements. Those mods WOULD give at least 60bhp at the CRANK, which would be around 45~50bhp to the WHEELS. So really you both are saying the same thing. Also, his recommended mods and my recommended mods would easily get it to 300bhp at the CRANK--which would be 250ish bhp assuming a conservative loss at the flywheel. But all that said and done, there is no point to even discuss this further as it probably is just a wasted chunk of bandwidth since he probably won't even do any of this according to everyone else here.

I'm planning an RB26DETT swap...

Right.

Current short list of things to do:
Fix the passenger side fog light. Bulb is shattered, fog light housing is dirty as hell. Housing has been removed along with the bulb, and is now sitting with a load of bleach in it. Just so I don't have to buy a new one.

Change the battery terminals:

Because corrosion and cracked cables are awesome.

Rip those stupid plastic badges off the back:

When I find a suitable way to remove the glue without fudging the paint.

Fix the drivers side mirror:

The plastic bit is cracked, looks stupid. Fixed when I get my repair manual from Amazon and hit up the local junkyard.

That'd be about it. Estimated total cost: <$50

It's only been 6 months! Have you no shame? And then to replace it with a Mustang?!?!

MistaX,
Congrats on the new ride!! I have always liked those Mustangs and I have even driven a few of them and had a blast. I am glad you went with the 5 speed. That makes it even more fun. :) 👍

Well, here we are on March 9, a good two months after Bergin bought the Mustang and, indeed, it's not on the road. In fact, I'll update you all: the tires are flat and recently he moved it into storage.

New wager: I come home for summer break on May 9 - $10 says he's not driving it by then, either.

The LEFT FRONT is indeed flat, due to whatever the hell is wrong with it.

Anyway it'll be insured in April. For sure. As I have less to pay off on the car, and can pay for both the car and insurance at the same time.

Pass and 'll?!?! Jesus, that was 4 years ago! You're so out of the loop it isn't even funny!

You've been bragging and boasting about this Mustang V8 monster of yours to me for weeks now....and you don't even have insurance on it!?

I might only have four feisty pistons, but at least I can drive my car legally.

GTFO----------->

Exactly.

Actually, he told me not that long ago, he drove it out of his driveway into his next door neighbor's driveway in the snow, of all times. Think: RWD and snow. You can imagine what happened. ;)
