What kind of sport is drifting, running around a course burning the tires off? Its not even hardly a competition. Can someone make an event for me leaving skid marks on a bicycle? Of course, I really don't mean that, I have enough respect for people that enjoy it.

seriously though, i'm pretty sure that in the 70's or early 80's mario andretti drove a lotus around central park, but pretty much everyone in the city was not about even that street closure.

I live close to the site of the track on staten island and everyone's in arms about the traffic that will cause, and like kensei says, we're practically jersey. They'd never close down manhattan; traffic sucks without a street closure and 100k people and their cars to help.

I say bring back Bridgehampton! And put it in GT5..

Hey now. Don't start dissin' dog sled racing. The hardest working athletes on the planet are sled dogs. No really, I saw it on a scientific tv show awhile back. The measured oxygen in the blood by some means. Olympic sprinters had a reading of 60, race horses had 150 or so, and sled dogs had 240. Oh yes, I blinded you with science.

I agree with you on the street racing aspect, and up until a couple of years ago, I also enjoyed watching F1 more than I did Nascar. Things really changed for me last year when Schumacher/Barrichello/Ferrari won just about everything. The only F1 race that I liked last year was Monaco, when Schumacher tried to bog things down in the tunnel, got nailed, and crashed out. I stopped watching after the next race, when Schumacher won again.

I didn't like parades as a kid, and as I've matured, I realize that I don't like 1-½ hour long parades, no matter how fast the cars are. Nascar is more interesting to me than F1 at this point in my life because as they say, 'rubbing is racing'. There are some drivers that I root for, but there are more drivers, arrogant types like Tony Stewart and Rusty Wallace, that I root against. Anyway, that's my 2¢ worth.

Don't forget that NASCAR doesn't race on ovals alone. They do have a couple road course races each year. The Busch Series is going down to Mexico City for the first time in 2 weeks, while Nextel Cup goes to Infineon Raceway (which is in GT4) in June, and both of them go to Watkins Glen in August.

nascar is a lot of fun to watch for the last 20 laps or so....otherwise it's mondo boring.

f1 is funner to watch from the beginning and throughout most of the race if it's close.

I was talking to my downstairs neighbor about the upcoming Daytona 500 race, and the topic came around to road races. I told her that I would much rather watch a road race than a oval race -- too boring on the latter.

Anyway, she started telling me that Dale Earhardt Jr., was asked to race a course marked out on the streets of NY. My mind started racing as to the implications. She told me that part of his course took him past the Rockefeller Center. During his racing (about 10 laps or so), he blew out 2 windows on the NBC building too!

By now, I am frothing at the mouth!! She gets done telling me about this -- and I ask her where she found out about it. She went on to tell me that she read it possibly at NASCAR.com, or maybe somewhere else on the web. At this point I couldn't control my excitement anymore -- I tell here that GT4 is introducing a NY Road Course. I told her the general layout is Washington Circle --> Time Square --> 42nd St., -->then making it's way over towards Rockefeller Center and up to SE Central Park, then back over to Washington Circle.

She went on further to tell me, that he was asked to do this as if he were running a regular road course (like Watkins Glenn, in upstate NY), and that he was just doing it for a test.

As I sat there pondering the possibilities, it started to make logical sense, that he MAY HAVE BEEN doing it for GT4. Think about it, a real race car driver is asked to run a road course on the streets of NY, run it like he would any other road course -- and it just happens to take him past Time Square AND Rockefeller Center. To me, all of these things add up to it. She is going to do some digging (as well as I am) and see if we can confirm any of it. Look at the map in the Wallpaper section of this site, and pull up the NYC track -- then blow it up to see the street names -- too many similarities to pass out of hand!

If they do more of that, they will gain more respect. To those of us that are not into NASCAR, it's those ovals that bores us to death. "Redneck" part bugs me a little, but I know many NASCAR fans who aren't rednecks(maybe 50/50 ratio). Personally, if I saw NASCAR on TV, and they were racing on something other than ovals, I'd check it out.

A lot of people diss NASCAR because they really don't understand what's going on. The same can be said for F1, hell... for lawnmower racing if you want to stretch it.

I used to think NASCAR was pretty boring, but then I actually sat down and watched a few races. The racing is one part, but there are some pretty cool stories to follow with the drivers, the tracks, etc. There is a HUGE amount of strategy going on when you see them "race around in a boring circle". The strategy is almost as cool as the racing itself. ...and as for being from Georgia or the south giving you the "right" to make comments... considering that a LOT of the top drivers are from California now, I don't think that holds water.

NASCAR road races are fun to watch. They used to be kinda silly, because it was obvious that it was a "fish out of water" experience for most of the guys. Now... you've got guys like Robbie Gordon, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhart Jr, etc. Those guys *know* how to run a road corse. Hell, Boris Said, a famous BMW road racer... is now running a 10 race deal with NASCAR!

NASCAR doesn't have the technology that F1 does. By that, I mean they don't have the in-your-face technology. I'm sorry...but "launch control", computer-assisted paddle shifters... and constant telemetry streaming to the teams. ... technology is great stuff, but it almost seems that they've put so much into the cars that it's a computer battle rather than the drivers and the cars. You may mock NASCAR for it's "low-tech" approach, but they run carburated, push-rod engines that you gotta shift yourself.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's just a different form of racing. Don't knock it before you understand it. You may not like it, and that's fine... just please be a damn adult about it (or a pre-adult) and voice your opinions without flaming someone. Over the past 10 years I've watched message boards of all sorts, and there's a definite trend here. People are complete jerks to one another at the drop of a hat. Would you say it to them if they were standing right in front of you? Probably not. If you would, you're either a punk or just an asshole. The world needs neither.

C'mon guys. I know I'm no angel, but quit being jackasses. This is a good forum, and it's obvious that there are a LOT of Gran Turismo fans out there. Let's keep it about that and celebrate the differences we have.

If I remember correctly, it's FOX for the first half of the season and NBC for the 2nd.

With the amount of money that series generates you can be sure that it's broadcast on major networks. Gotta make sure Cleetus and Jethro can watch on their antenna down in Georgia.

I'll try to remember to check the TV schedule in June and August then. I'll also tell my friends who follows NASCAR to remind me, when those races are coming up.

I'm from Watkins Glen, I used to be a corner marshall there. NASCAR can be pretty fun there...get to see dudes like Boris and Ron Fellows run with them. I saw Ron Fellows completely OWN a Grand Nat'l race in '98. NASCAR is kind of a pain to work with cause a lot of them grew up cirlce racing and don't understand the course/flags/brakins zones etc. Its a great experience to stand right next to the track when all 36 cars blow by you on lap 1, can knock you right off your feet if you're not paying attn.

But I really love Sportscar Racing..Grand Am is my thing right now. But, nothing beats Can-Am from the 70's, and IMSA GTP from the 80's. Big Stock Cars are kinda cool and lound when they go by.....but nothing beats a Ferrari 333SP going by @ 200+ MPH with the rev limiter clicking.

I think IMSA used to come to Portland(OR). I never got to see them, but they had some of the coolest cars.

Ugh, I hate NASCAR ...

1) While it's untrue that "NASCAR requires no skill," the car setup is much more important to doing well in NASCAR than skill, IMO ... That being said, many LeMans champions haven't done too well in NASCAR (e.g. Ron Fellows) and vica versa (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) ...

2) Oval tracks are so boring ... I don't really enjoy watching a car go around in a big circle for 2 hours straight ...

3) NASCAR fans ...

It's just sickening ...
Finding crashes entertaining is one thing ... but to actually encourage and cheer crashes is another ...
Also, their anti-import beliefs and refusal to accept that a car with more torque isn't necessarily faster is quite frustrating to me ... Physics is their enemy

Nascar hasnt dissallowed any imports, there hasnt been any serious inquiery or a correct model propossed. The only thing even close to this is in the Nascar Truck series, and YES they do have toyota

I would think most of you that play GT are not just racing around a track and winning, you understand car setups and physics and the such...well that goes for ALL motorsports. I am a fan of all motorsports, and yeah NASCAR does get somewhat boring depending on the track. But it's a motorsport where inches count as well as HP. It takes as much skill to drive a NEXTEL CUP car as it does to drive a F1 car. I would think if you truly play GT for the experience you would give/have some respect for all motorsports.....I know I do! OK I hope that all made sense.

Well, i'm gonna jump in on this. I haven't read all the pages, but i read the first two and half of #3.

To all you who say Nascar is boring: Did you see the last 10 laps of the Daytona 500 this past Sunday? If you don't think that is exciting, then i don't know what's wrong with you. 4 lead changes in 9 laps. It was CRAZY!!

And correct me if i'm wrong, but how interesting can a sport be when 1 guy wins every championship? What's his name? Schumaker??? Now, i don't follow F1, and in America it would be pretty tuff even if i wanted to. But isn't F1 pretty predictable. Ferrari wins.....Schumaker wins........... isn't that how it goes????

And what i have seen of F1 is totally different than NASCAR, in F1 you don't have a group of 20 cars, 3 wide, all trying to fight for the same position.

i'm not trying to convince ya'll to like NASCAR, but at least respect it.
