I have just come in possession of an older model PSP, and I'm thinking about hacking it to run homebrew. However, I know almost nothing about running PSP Homebrew, so I wonder if it is a wise move.

You see, I plan on using the PSP with my PS3 through Remote Play as well as playing some of the newer games like Vice City Stories and God of War, and I'm worried that hacking the PSP will prevent the use of those because they may require a higher firmware version.

So, should I do it?

If so, which custom firmware/homebrew hack should I look into?

If not, why not?

Note: It's a thick PSP running Firmware version 2.00, and I want it to work with a 60GB PS3.

hmmmm...if you do want to use a new firmware, use either dark alex's latest one(dunno whats it called) or the M33 3.71. They allow you to download games and i believe you have all the features in the official counterpart updates. Get a professional to do it. Don't try to do it yourself. Not a wise idea.

I reckon you should cause there is a tutorial of how to do the PSP hack at qj.net forums. you don't need professional help to do so cause I was on the same page as you the first time I did it. I followed the instruction and downgraded my PSP to 1.50 then I upgrade it to 3.40 OE-A. I don't recommend you use the latest 3.71 M33 as it's not as stable as the 3.40 OE-A. have fun with homebrewing!

Go for it...i didnt know much but i watched my dad and now it a cinch...just make sure whatever your trying to get on ur psp and whatever ur trying to hack make sure the thing your doing has an instruction guide. I follow step by step stuff or do it myself if i know how...i wouldnt waste money on a pro lol...psp is easy to hack.

Well, I've read through the guides on Homebrew at qj.net forums and I feel pretty confident that I can downgrade mine to 1.50 then upgrade it to 3.40 OE-A. Before I do that, though, I'd like to know if there's any way to uninstall 3.40 OE-A and go back to official firmware if new features are announced that has not been covered by the hacked firmware.

At the moment there should be a downgrader to that firmware...there is for most others.

I have succesfuuly down graded a few times.

All u need is the downgrader from 3.40 oea to 1.5 fw

It probbly is okay, but you will risk permanently bricking your psp, if it's just a spare, it's probably worth it if it's out of warranty. You can use your new one to use remote play. I'm not suggesting it though.

I got 2 psp's so i don't worry about bricking them although a few times i've needed to use recovery mode. I thought i bricked it but all i had to do was hold up power and press 'r' and go to exit and it all came back.

Well, I did it. I just bought a 2gb Memory Stick, downgraded to 1.5, and installed 3.40 OE-A. After that I proceeded to install several types of emulators. However, it seems that while NesterJ runs perfectly, Daedalus has messed up textures, and SNES9X and gpSP refuses to work at all.

Can anyone recommend good N64, GBA and SNES emulators that are usable on 3.40 OE-a?

I believe if you want remote play to work you need FW 3.5+. I may be wrong about that. im using 3.71 M33 (dark alex is m33) and never had it crash or not play anything. i dont know what extreme car is talking about. i have 2 psp iso's, nj neo geo and cps emulators, nester and wifisniffer on my psp and work without a problem. not to mention you need higher firmwares to run newer games.

congrats on the successful downgrade, it's a real nailbiter watching that thing downgrade :)

I just find out that it won't play my backed up game for example virtua tennis 3 and most of games aren't up to 3.71 yet

So I just purchased a new PSP 2000 (in ice silver) and am looking to hack it. I read something about needing a pandora battery. Can anyone give me some advice or point the way? Anyone here successfully installed homebrew on a new psp?

New meaning slim? I have done millions of homebrews on my thick psp and pandora battery? Never heard of it and iv'e never had to use one.

From reading some online tutorials, it seems the new slim psp runs 3.71 operating system or some such thing and it can't be downgraded. You need a pandora battery and another memory stick. But before I proceed to mess up my brand new psp I want to make sure I know exactly what I am to do.

I dont have my psp on me but i believe if u go to system settings or something it says the firmware version. Also you need at least a 1 gig memory stick. I have a 2gig and a 4gig.

yes once you turned your battery to pandora battery you can't use it anymore you need a fresh new battery from sony. There is no way you can mess up your PSP because if you got the wrong files in your memory stick then the pandora battery wouldn't run and to make a pandora you have to have a hacked PSP or you could buy them somewhere online. you can find the tutorial on how to hack psp slim on qj.net.

I know this thread is old but i am thinking about hacking mine to play ps1 games. First of all, It's only an old psp that's only use at the moment is watching videos and listening to music, and i plan on buying a new one soon so i'm not too worried about screwing up. It's on FW 3.80, is there anyway to get that down to 3.40 OE? If not, will i be able to play ps1 games on an M33 version? I am thinking about putting 3.90 or even 4.01 M33 on it, as long as i can run ps1 games off that version.

Just update to 4.01 M33-2. It will play most PS1 games without a problem. 👍 As long as you know what to do, then there should not be a problem. Even if you bricked your PSP, there is always a Pandora's battery to the rescue...... ;)

Yeah, but i don't want to brick it if i can help it, is it safe to just upgrade straight to 4.01 M33?

Well I'm not sure about that, but I think most people had no problem upgrading from 3.90 to 4.01. Just ask H3rmaN about all this things, since he also did help me on upgrading my PSP. 👍 But to me, if you follow the steps correctly, you should not have any problem bricking your PSP.....

Thanks for the help, do you know where i can find detailed instructions on how to do it? I just want to do it carefully. :nervous:

Your firmware should be high enough to be able to use the network update and be able to let it do it itself. I was on 3.90 m33 and did that and it sorted itself out, you may be better off doing that if you're unsure on what you're doing 👍

Pyrelli

Edit: I meant letting it update itself to 4.01 m33, I didn't make myself very clear. You may also need to be on at least 3.80 m33 update 2 to be able to do it.

I would, but my wifi card's broken and i get the internal error so i can't connect. I did some research and it said something about already having to be on 3.50 M33 or something. I would need to downgrade but there's no downgrader for 3.80 yet, so i might just wait. Thanks for the help anyway guys. :)

You could use Dark Alex's Time Machine, it sounds like thats what you're looking for if you need to go back to a previous firmware.

Pyrelli

Thats where your wrong! There is a way, and it can downgrade ALL PSP's! Even the official 4.01 FW.

Yeah i know that one but i only have one battery, about the time machine, does that work with fat psp's? I googled it and everything said it installs 1.50 kernel on slim psp's.
