I know I'm new, but how does one become a Mod?

I was not saying it to tick you off, I was saying it as the honest truth, you never, ever seem to listen to anyone when they say things will change in the next 5 years, even 3. It will happen despite what you think.

Also, I know what you are doing and I don't know if it is just me but here I go (not meaning to be offensive at all).
Lately, within the last year the kids here at GTP (under 15 year olds) have decided that changing your text is cool, to be honest, I really don't think it is. It, again, doesn't make you any more superior and makes you look, I dunno, immature? (Not sure if thats the right word for it). Not to mention that bright colours go terribly on any reading background, including black and especially white and grey.

So...is mine stupider because I'm...14? It was for 1,000 posts, I mean maybe not big but mine's at least a better interpretation than the orange and/or CS font used by tlowr. Just making an easy point 'round here.

In mu opinion it doesnt matter what it looks like (although yours is easier), it is the fact that you have even bothered in what I think it is a 'rip off' of the famous Famine.

I have gone 4 and a half thousand posts without needing to use a colour for one of them, I don't see why it is so hard for you guys just to blend in and be normal instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. The colours attract attention while scrolling down a page which could lead people to think you are attention seeking immature little kids, which I know you are not.

Just putting my 2 cents in.

A more interesting question is what causes mods to get de-modded and how often it happens. Not that I think GTP needs to add or subtract from the mod group. Judging from response times on AUP violations, I think GTP has sufficient moderatorage (granted the report button is helpful).

Perhaps the first thing a 14 year old wishing to be a GTP mod might ask themselves is whether GTP actually needs another mod - and whether other members will appreciate it. Another question to ask yourself would be why on earth you actually want to be a moderator.

Well then...this has turned a little bit awkward. I'm not trying to rip Famine off, I wanted to do that I'd be in Indigo and I'd attempt to be a supergenius as he is. I don't find it annoying, in fact it actually helps me notice some members. Surely, sometimes it is out of hand, but I don't know, it's just a fun thing around here, I mean it doesn't attract a bad rep. Although in respectnfor you, I'll keep this post normal.

It's happened a few times...Two mods were banned: One for deleting posts he didn't agree with (back in late-2001), and another mod allowed another "standard" user to use his account to ban others indiscriminately.

Several others just stopped contributing at GTPlanet altogether, and effectively turned in their badges, with no penalty. I know some just asked Jordan to be standard members, others just seemed to publicly "fall off the 'Planet".

A bit like Superman II

I forgot to mention you lose your GTP-issued insurance card. So, we're told to avoid bar fights after de-modding.

I will say the worst part of being a moderator at GTP is that you have none of the same powers at other forums; you get used to moving threads, denying threads, banning idiots, et cetera. Instead, you have to act like a bit of a suck-up, because nobody likes a know-it-all to tries to use his police badge in another jurisdiction. This isn't a great deal of an issue at other GT forums, since most GTP mods have some cred at other places (and vice versa), but there's times I want to infract/ban total idiots at some car forums (which tend to have their share of loose and over-torqued dolts), but you're powerless.

So it's pretty much like, say, you're a policeman here in the States, but you go to Germany and you hate how you can't pull that drunk driver in front of you?

That's how I thought of it.

Others just seemed to "fall off the 'Planet"

So my theory of internet-al gravity was wrong? Damnit.

Give their names, please? 💡
Sorry for bump anyways. ;)

No.

Also I find it disturbing that, given this comment earlier in the thread

I'm not trying to rip Famine off

The image out of which I formed my avatar can now be found as GT_Prologue5's avatar...

As an Admin for a successful videogame site, I'll say that being a Moderator isnt all the glory you may think it is. If your doing it for the status symbol, then dont bother as you wont succeed. If your doing it cause you have a love for helping people, and the forum, then its in your future. I think a moderator is more about helping members and the site then punishing people and throwing your wait around.

The best way to get noticed is to be yourself, and not who you think the site wants you to be.

I tried posting in a colour for about 10 posts (It was blue if you are wondering) however got sick of it pretty quickly. As long as the colour is easily legible then I'm cool with it. Famine started it however the famous quote "Does someone who makes a really good chair owe money too everyone who has previously made a chair." kind of somes up my view to is it just ripping him off.

Yes, we are. Case in point: you.

There is no special sequence of things to do to become a moderator, no combination of criteria that will see the Powers That Be promote you. I recently got kicked upstairs, and I can honestly say that the invitation to join the mod squad came out of the blue. I wasn't aware the moderators were considering new members, much less that they were considering me as a new member. I've been here since 2004 - I was here for the release of GT4; yes, I'm that old - and in all that time, I cannot put my finger on one single episode or incident that would have suggested I had the potential to become a moderator. Hell, I've crossed swords with many a member in my time (and once even recently), so I was thinking I'd be one of the last people the moderators would consider.

In the end, you'll have to be a member of the forums for a while and generaly live up to the expectations of the community: intelligent posting, avoiding flame wars, keeping the AUP in mind and so on.

Well, although we may have our disagreements, you're mature with your posts, and wise, you're experienced(2004 is a long time ,so you would probably know how members are when a new game releases), and you show intelligence in your posts, and people everywhere have a lot of respect for you. All enough to be a mod.

...and while there were people with more posts and/or more time on GTP, they just picked you. Feeling lucky yet? :sly:

I wasn't referring to you.

I think Peter was pointing out that he's had disagreements with you, but you've always kept it above board.

You're opinionated, and there are times I've disagreed with you , but you manage to be remarkably civil in arguments, which makes you perfect to be a mod... the ability to keep a level head when the heat is on is just as important as the ability to not get into heated arguments in the first place.

There's a time and place for "nice" mods and a time and place for "tough" mods. Guys who aren't afraid to be up-front about things and tell people what's what. I think you'll do fine.

I'm surprised I'm here, as well... though I've been a mod on several other forums, I've once or twice opined (since 04, as well!) that I was happy not to be a mod on here, because this forum is a busy one, and the moderating standards are exacting... but I'm flattered to have been chosen, so I accepted. ;)
