Please pardon a nearly eight year member making a horrid thread title.

Prelude to the nightmare:

I pre-ordered GT5, as I had been waiting for it, like many of you, since I peeled the cellophane off of my copy of GT4.

In the days when the PSN was down, I was stuck at level 19 and couldn't get to 20 to save my life. Every avenue I tried for the classic racing car championship was an embarrassment. The Countach was slaughtered, the Camaro with the Racing modification was outclassed. OUt of Desperation, I tried the Trans-Cammer. Epic Fail. (But failure never sounded so glorious)

In a fit of mania, with few credits remaining and a bunch of useless vehicles, I deleted my file and decided to start anew. Besides, the previous file was more or less an exercise in winning by massively outgunning the competition. I needed to challenge myself.

But a twelve year Gran Turismo veteran has come to an unfortunate realization:

I suck.

I started with a Miata of some sort, and things were swell for the first few races.

But no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to even get silver on all of the lowly A license tests. I've wasted four hours trying to get just silver the last four A license tests. I didn't even get gold on all of the B license tests!

I don't understand it. I was somehow able to to gold the blasted thing on GT2, GT3, and GT4. And every time I am defeated.

I apparently cannot get a Hommel Berlinette around Le Mans to save my life.
My real life ride, a Subaru Legacy, has in-game road manners I would expect out of a Chevy Suburban.

I'm trying to get back into this game, I really am. Something just isn't clicking. The test with the Peugeot on the A license has taken two hours of my life and what seems to be a significant portion of the padding on my thumb.

Does anyone have any pointers for someone who is apparently a total hack to get back to basics in this game? I don't seem to be learning much from the license tests. That could be a problem.

Here's my garage:

'95 Mazda Roadster 1.8
'03 Subaru Legacy B4 2.0 GT (ok, my real car is an '09 with the NA 2.5 and the four speed that Moses carried down Sinai before people even had a concept of history)
'87 Mugen Motul Civic
'98 Hommel Berlinette
'03 Mazda something or other concept (FF)
Daihatsu OFC-1
Mazda Demio 1.3
And a Vitz of some sort.

I really want to give this game another chance. Any suggestions? Maybe I'm in the wrong state of mind.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
High-Test

Sounds like you're using a DS3, save some cash and buy a steering wheel. The experience alone is worth it. It feels better, you want to play more. When I get stuck, I watch the example afew times to see what I can improve. Also be relaxed, it makes for a better experience and you'll drive better. Good Luck, stay positive and that Mugen Civic is a great car.

This actually sounds a lot like me going from A-spec to online......
Anyways, the key is practice. I recommend choosing one of you current cars and learning it through and through. Learn how to tune it, learn how to drive it like a boss, and learn how to beat competition that is stronger then you with it.
What tended to happen with me is that I would try a lot of different cars, thinking that I would find one that was better for me then the rest. What it really comes down to is that you need to make yourself good with a car, and the best way to do that is to just rinse and repeat. Plus, an underpowered car can beat overwhelming odds if you tune it and drive it right, so you could end up going through 3 or more categories with a good deal of practice.
What I'm saying is that you need to master a car. A lot of skills transfer over, especially if the cars are the same general type (I.e. High center-of-gravity, lots of understeer, etc.)

I personally am going to do this exact thing with a Ford GT tomorrow. I've been slipping on my skills :dopey: Master a car, and WIN!!!

Get a Steering Wheel! Soooo much better

Honestly, I think the problem is mostly in your head. You are slowly defeating yourself. Rather then seeing the glass half full, you are seeing it near empty. A positive mind set goes along way, and instant results are not always to be. Once, the mind is in the right frame, then you go on to figuring out what exactly it is your doing wrong.

No matter what you do, whether you play guitar or play drums, you have to start slow. You worry about the speed later. Do your tests slowly and get the right idea in your mind and worry about "The Gold" after you have got what your supposed to be doing.

Go on youtube, and look at how others achieved their results and break those down slowly and then try and recreate it yourself.

Speaking as one who has not got all golds, I find the license tests boring and repetitive and not worth my time. But I did force myself to get at least silver on all, and wound up with gold on most.

The key to ME getting through them (without alien talent) was to slow down and look up.

I have a habit of braking too late and looking at the road directly in front of the car. I have to force myself to slow down (brake earlier) and look up (keep my eyes up and focussed farther down the track).

Get back in the karts. Buy the DLC and play on kart space. Back to the roots of racing.

Slow is smooth, and smooth is FAST!

And remember... The CAR is HEAVY!!!

Get a wheel - G27 is a good choice.

This little licence test problem your having is no real big deal pal, I'm on a DS3 and right when I first started GT5 first day of release I probably got gold on about 1/4 of them since then I've gone back to have a break from racing doing one or two and seeing what new cars come up in the UCD, Now I've got golds on a good 3/4 at least, Getting there slowly just don't force it, The licences don't have bearing on the game really truth be told :).

So what I can't gold all the test either. I forget which one but all you have to do is drive on Tsukuba and make one turn and it's not very hard yet it's literally impossible for me to get gold. The closets I got was lets say gold was 1:45.500 I got 1:45.501 literally that close to it after hours of trying and I would of rather failed hard than come that close. I'm sure you have a controller. Just do all of the test and move on with the game. Try different peoples tunes for the cars to see what suits you best and look at other races ahead to see what the best choice of car is to buy that can get into the majority of races.

I find GT5 is harder to be fast with with a gamepad than GT4 was, I was genuinely fast in GT4 with the pad, not even close in most situations in GT5 (Oval racing is a nightmare with the DS3).

However, driving with a wheel can make a massive difference and i'm glad I decided to upgrade to one ready for GT5, especially in regards to feeling the car and being smooth. I highly recommend you purchase a wheel for the experience this game can give you. It is more than worth it 10 times over.

You won't regret it!

He's right.

that Mugen Civic is a great car.
And right again.

Seriously though, a wheel is really a good way to freshen things up. And no need to spend big bucks—buy a low end one or even better, a used good one. A wheel will increase your driving skill and precision in the game, but more importantly, it makes it more fun. Sounds like a wheel could shoot a little life back into you GT experience.

Also, it sounds like your really a 'completion' kind of guy: you seek joy out of overcoming the challenges the game presents (licenses, A-spec levels, etc.). Not banging on your philosophy, but maybe you'd like to try a different approach to the game. For example, I don't really get wrapped up in licenses and 100% gears and that. I just acquire the dough necessary to buy the cars I want to drive—then drive them! Just an easygoing, for-fun approach.

I can empathise with your situation. I suck too. Just that I used to suck big time and now things are better. I could not bronze my B licenses initially after many tries. I rage at the impossibility of driving the kart beginner, second race. I struggled 19min to drive Nordscheiffe in a Mazda Furai..with all aids on/race soft. First time around, I quit the Ring after 20mins+ as I do not know when the torment will end. Every bronze was an herculean effort worthy of a celebratory dance.
In short, I struggled a lot. Then I used overpowered cars all with race soft and SRF on/auto/all aids on to win races to get some confidence. Slowly, I took each aid off till all I have now is auto/abs 1/driving line. Then I reduce the upgrades bit by bit till I have just race soft. Then I reduce the tire grade slowly till stock or same as AI in seasonal. Then I went back to special events and licenses to check things out. Many tests, I get silver/gold on first few tries. Gold half of licenses by now and not trying too hard if I don't.
In short, come back to stuff that frustrates you later. Don't forget to have fun. When u return to some of the licenses/special events or tougher races like historic car, All stars, FGT later, you may find them easier.
Now I am trying to take driving line off (tho I dun follow them but they are important guides for me now) by doing endurance races without them. Next step is manual transmission then perhaps ABS off for older cars. Hopefully, one day, I can drive a yellowbird.

To gold licenses then taking off all aids is a must. Also, I find it easier having my sensitivity at 7.

I think persistence counts for a lot. I'm not particularly great at this game but I'm determined to get that platinum trophy and I'm slowly getting there (I'm also pretending that the Vettel special events don't exist). It's really satisfying to revisit licenses that I got a lousy bronze on before and now I can fairly easily get a gold. I've still got 14 more licenses to gold but at least it shows I've improved since my days of driving the Sunday Cup. There have been plenty of things that I've thought I will never win, such as the first Loeb rally challenge but after days and days of trying and retrying, the satisfaction of getting gold is like no other.

Just keep at it.

You shouldn't pay those license tests too much attention.
All of them (except the rally tests) have forced skid recovery force that makes most of the cars totally unrealistic to drive. I was forced to use the handbrake in many of the FR tests in order to achieve gold.
Enjoy the game, practice MR and FR with comfort tyres.
The licenses will be much easier after you've played the game for a while.

I had the same problem when I first got the game I was at my girlfriends for her broadband lol to download my chromelines and stealth's. And only had the Ds3......I sucked!!! But when I got the game home and used the DFGT it was a different story.......I was a driving GOD! lmao Then I got Fibre optic broadband and I realised........I was just a mere mortal! lol Get yourself a wheel my friend It's well worth it, you honestly are missing out big time!

I did all the licenses because they were there, I got mostly bronze, some silver and a few golds. 1 or 2 goes at each and nothing more. Race online with your friends, nothing like a bit of human competition to sharpen your skills.
Oh and get a wheel :)

when i did my license i got silver on them and a few gold, went and tore into the game and went back when the ps3 was down, i found them so much easier to get gold on them, other than that peugeot one!! but after a few setup changes i nailed it and the rest were soon gold too. take your time watch your replays and check out the settings oh and turn off those driving aids.

Get a wheel(not entirely needed)
Learn to trail brake, and not always hold on the brake 100% so you are traveling more speed into the corners and remember to keep your inputs smooth.

Also to hep, turn off all aids, they will only make you slower.

Learn the braking points and the driving line of the tracks and learn the car you are using.

If you're using a DS3, I found switching to the right analog stick for gas/brake as opposed to the x/square system worked wonders. It took a little while to get used to it, but it gives you the opportunity to be so much smoother. GT5 is a lot harder with a DS3, since the cars are more sensitive and are more prone to oversteer and such. Believe me, after you give yourself time to get used to it, you'll be amazed at the difference 👍

I race in real life, so I don't k ow if this helps or not: be smooth theough the corners, and When braking, do it Schumacher style. Brake earlier, then later, later, until you overdrive the turn. Then just figure out what the latest braking point was when you where smooth through then corner. Help your car control too

^^ This (exept ABS:1) :dopey:👍

And a lot practice without the aids. The aids mostly holding you back from going fast & giving you a wrong feedback from the car.

I've had at the start as well problems. Repeated all license tests month ago on my 2nd account & oh boy, it was so easy. Got the most with the first try & all 60 done in 2 days. :)

But as a DS3 player I can say, for some licenses some aids are a help. F.e. for the slalom test active steering was indeed a help. :sly:

Exactly. :dopey:👍

For smoothness you have to use the pressure sensitive buttons (the right & left analog sticks, or L2 & R2). I for example use the left analog stick for steering & the right analog stick for braking (up) and accelating (down).

Some prefer to use the L2 button for braking & the R2 button for accelating. Each their own. Try different setups & you'll find out which is the best for you.

And if you want to be competitive online, the tune of your car is very important. Check my signature. :sly:

WAY TO GO FISHING FOR COMPLIMENTS CHRIS!!!

honestly the nerve of some people :sly:

I found that resisting the urge to try and only use cars you win very helpful, sometimes you just gotta spend spend spend.

gotta add you on psn didn't realize you had a ps3

Remember the car is heavy!
Nah honestly sometimes in life the harder you try the worse you are. When hot lapping in practice mode I'm flawless, when online however...
Try to relax or take a break. I would recommend that you get a wheel too. I use a DFGT, I can't imagine playing the game without it now. Going from a DS3 to wheel though requires a ton if patience, which really I don't think you have right now.
So think less, focus more, buy wheel, enjoy more. 👍

Focus more, relax man, relaxed you will be able to drive better, don't think to much about the pressure of the time to gold the events or to overtake a car, just drive smoothly.
And one important thing: Never give up!👍 Pratice makes perfect, im a DS3 user too, and i managed to learn a lot of things during this time(since the GT5 release), now my driving is a lot better than was before, and i can drive cars that i was not able to (Le Mans cars, F1).

If you can afford, get a wheel, trust me is a lot more fun than the DS3, i used a wheel on GT4 and it was great, too bad wheels are expensive(for PS3).

Cheers man :)

If you don't have racing wheel. Try changing the accelerate and brake buttons to the R and L triggers, it helps me a lot.

You just need to practice ;)
I have ds3 and im kicking butt!

That one gave me problems too. I kept getting close. But after an hour I finally "gave up" and watched the demo run. He took a completely different line. Instead of out-in-out he dived straight to the inside curb. I thought it was a bizarre but I gave it a shot and BAM. Gold.
