Preferred Sizes: 17inch, 19 inch, 21 inch, 23 inch or 24 inch
Type of monitor: CRT, LCD or LED

Max Budget: £650

My friend recently bought a Hannspree HF225DPB 20" LCD Monitor. It actually looked quite nice after some calibration, and it only costs the equivalent of £85.

However, this is a low-end; if you want to get rid of those £650 then I recommend that you buy a 27" Apple cinema display in US dollars through PayPal. It costs £918 from apple, yet in the US it costs $1000, which is less than £650 at the current exchange rate. You can pay for that in pounds through PayPal (on eBay or amazon, etc), but unfortunately they only ship to the USA. However, you can get around this as well using a company called Bongo International. Especially since you are focusing on photography, the quality of this display can scarcely be matched. The resolution is 2560x1440, and it is the single brightest, most vibrant display I have ever seen and the contrast ratio is phenomenal. So... I'll stop and let you make up your own mind :D

Dell U2410. It's an IPS panel just like you find in the Apple Cinema Displays and having seen both of these you'd be a fool to choose the more expensive Apple monitor. Shop around and you'll find it much cheaper than direct from Dell, then with the spare cash buy a Spyder 3 to keep it calibrated. No point having a decent monitor if you don't keep it calibrated correctly.

I would second either a Dell U2x11 series or a Apple Cinema Display. In terms of color reproduction quality, those two are absolutely fantastic. There are some high end HP and NEC branded monitors that compete nicely too.

Purists say that CRT screens are still absolutely the best color reproducing screens. However, flat panels are starting to approach that color quality. When looking for a LCD monitor for your use, make sure to stay away from a TN screen. Their color is not that great.

Update

I have just ordered a Dell U2711.

My Final Thoughts:

I want to thank everyone, who posted up a suggestion.
