I had so much fun playing Mario Kart 64, even thought it had this sort of boost enabled (last places get better items), that's what make the game fun, you go all the way through the circuit thinking "oh, ****, here comes the blue turtle", and you laugh about it - or get pissed off LOL. I also had much fun playing Cruisin' the World and USA, and the boost was obviously there. But those games are to have fun without worrying about anything else.
This is Gran Turismo we are talking about, you can't afford to call it The Real Driving simulator, when you get grip out of nowhere, or you loose it without really affect your driving techniques, you can brake and accelerate in the same spots while you are "boosted", but the seconds come alone without even notice you are going 10 seconds faster.
