I want some opinions on Z06's.

Just for the info, there is also the 2001 Z06, and that version makes 385 hp (as opposed to 405)...

I recon I'd wait for the C6 Z07. I heard it'll be packin' 500 ponies :trouble:

And it'll also cost about twice as much as a current use Z06.

I know there's a 2001 model. It seems as though those are more prone to the steering colun lock failures, and bad valve seals. Plus, it's the first year of the car, and I'd like to avoid it.

I would wait for the C6, but I love the looks of the current C5 Z06's. And, like ShobThaBob said, a current used Z06 will cost less than half of what a C6 will.

The Mustang is America's muscle car (even though I love the Camaro a little more). The Corvette is America's sports car. Having proven itself at Le Mans and around places in-between, the ZO6 (I heard of a ZO6 in the past. Was there really a ZO6 in the past?). Unlike that bigmouth Kax from "Sports Car Revolution," who prefers cars in black, I'm more of a red guy.

I will admit, however, that black is a pretty hot color for a ZO6. The ZO6 on the outside is one of the last sexiest cars America has to offer. Take a look at this machine. The ZO6 is about as sexy as Viper_Maniac's busty avatar, if not more than that. The ZO6 weighs in at about maybe 3200 pounds, costs over 30,000, and can be a joy to drive. I'm not a driver, so I have no personal experience. But when you see one of these on the road, it is an eye-catcher. I'm not bashing tuner cars, but the ZO6 can get anyone's attention without flashy colors or trick spoilers. "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..." And there are 400+ ways to love it. That is, 400 hp and change of American power. Personally, I think this is a sports car that everyone can find something nice about it. If you don't like American cars, at least be impressed with its looks and style. Before the C6 kills it all, the ZO6 is like a sexy hottie that steps up to you and wants to know your name and stuff. When she leaves, you'll be wanting more of this foxy diva. But there's nothing feminine about the car's performance. It's a Sunday driver that can be taken to the strip or road course and own both of them. I'd personally say that the ZO6 has serious cool factor. If I wanted one, I'd want it in Torch Red or the color that red 50th Anniversary color. Why red? It's a fast color. It's an angel that deeply sinned and wants to raise Hell against any disbelievers. You dig, player?

Jeremy Clarkson hated it.

Jeremy Clarkson hates nearly every car that isnt britsh or europeon..... Exept the Ford GT

He liked the Holdens, and the Cadillac Escalade.
Well, technically, Richard Hammond liked it.

Ive seen vids of him bagging the Holden Monaro..... quite alot.

Someone who only likes cars that aren't British, much less European? I thought we only get domestic lovers in the States... anyhow, I'm impressed with the ZO6 in terms of performance and looks.

Thanks a ton for the reply, John. I was actually hoping you'd make an appearance in my thread. You always have a ton to say when it comes to cars, so I was hoping you'd give me your opinons of the Z.:p
I too have heard of a Z06 back in the day. Sometime in the 60's, I believe. Don't have a clue as to what it was like, though.

I'm glad you brought up the weight of the Z06. I've heard around 3100lb., but either way, it's weight is one of the main deciding factors for me. One of the main things I hate about the Cobra is the fact that it's a fat pig. She weighs in over 3,600lb. in full street trim, without fuel. So, with fuel, and me, she's just over 3,900lb. That's just ridiculous. I'd rather have a 420rwhp 3,100lb. Z06 than a 500rwhp 4,000lb Cobra anyday.

About the color. I've considered Torch Red, but I dunno. I never really have liked red cars. I would say I don't want something bright and flashy like red, but I currently am looking at Millenium Yellow Z06's.:odd: The car I really want is a Speedway White Z06 with the Mod red/black leather interior. Absolutely beautiful. Kind of reminds me of another car I used to have.:( I've considered silver, but it would remind me too much of the Cobra, and of a friend's Accord that I smashed into the back of a semi-truck breaking my nose, and cheek bone.:scared:

I am glad you feel that way, and then the Z06 is your perfect match. It is perfectly balanced, and not that much of an overweight pig like your Cobra. The Z06 has very good handling, and the straightaway are great. Overall, it is a very nice car; I have always respected the Z06 and always will. It is a great car Josh, and you had better not wreck it the first week you received it.

The Z06 will be killer on the drag strips! With the Z06, you will be able to destroy many cars on highway rolls. I have seen numerous video of the Z06 and you have to be crazy to be not impressed.

Although I am not really a domestic fan, ill take the Z06 over the Supra any day. You do not need many mods; your Z06 is already very fast stock.

Glad you chose the Z06 and hope you take care of it well.

By the way, is there any other car that you are considering?

I drive a low 11 second '03 Cobra. Chances are I'm not going to wreck a slower car.:p

I'm also looking foward to the Z06's strong(er) rear-end. The Cobra has a really weak IRS, and tends to break halfshafts like crazy. Any wheelhop, or too hard of a launch, and boom! My Cobra is an awesome car for highway rolls, but with the same power as the Cobra the Z06 would be outright badass.
By the way, is there any other car that you are considering?
Yes. A GTS Viper. It's no longer really a consideration, though. The power is about the only good thing I could think of that it has going for it - everything else I dislike.

Well just don't be careless.

So you seem to totally ruled out the Toyota Supra. Too bad, the Supra is a great car although its no Z06. I wouldnt get a viper, when I hear viper I imagine an old rich white guy.

Trying to make derogatory marks on people, Rollazn? Easy, now. I'm honored to talk the Corvette to you. I don't really like retractable lights, so if I had one, I'd try to find a light kit to replace the retractables. I'd want the lights to be like the C5R in the American Le Mans Series. I mean, that's what I'd do, not saying everyone should do it. If I wanted it to be a racer, I'd slap on some rear wing to aid in downforce and perhaps add a rollcage or something for rigidity. And of course, if I can get lighter body parts and modified suspension... wait. That's turning a ZO6 into a club racer. Anything to make Houston Area Chevy Dealers happy, I guess.

I like the Corvette even though I'm not diverse with American cars. If I had more money, I'd love to get a Corvette from the 1950s, or even a nice 60s Corvette. I'm trying not to look for Barrett-Jackson cars, but maybe a nice, used one that hasn't been abused too much in looks or performance.

The C6 could have had better lights. Maybe base them on the good old Sting Ray one with the non-retractable headlights. Then, just make them more modern. But enjoy the last of nicely-styled GM cars before the newer ones take wave.

:dopey: Well I did not intend on offending anybody, but its very rare that you see a teenager driving a viper. Most of the time I see a viper it is driven by older guys who are going threw their mid-life crisis.

Would it be better if I said, from my experence, people who own viper are usually older than 19! :)

Its better if I say viper are more commonly owned by older folks. Old rich folks. 👍

I know a 19 year old with a red GTS. He lives in Columbia, SC. His parents bought it for him, though. He's the only teen I've seen in person with a Viper for sure. Usually, the one's I see, are mid-to-late 20 year olds who have decent jobs.

And John, I agree about the headlights. I've seen some aftermarket stationary headlights, but they look kind of goofy. If I saw some that looked clean, I'd definitely consider them.

On a side note, right now I have a buyer ligned up for the Cobra. Guy named Ryan. He lives in Iowa, but I'll be meeting him in Kentucky which is halfway for both of us. Should be August 15th or 16th or so - as it's the most convenient date for us both. If he doesn't meet me there, I'm driving back and keeping the nice deposit he gave me.;) We're set on $26,000 which is effing cheap. The resale value of '03/04 Cobra's is absolutely PATHETIC! It makes me sick.:irked:

Anyhoo, me selling it this soon is a bad thing. I would like to wait until the C6 is out to get a C5 Z06, but if I sell the Cobra this soon there's little chance I can go that long without something fast. Whatever, though. At this point I'm just glad to get rid of the Cobra so I can stop paying $560+ a month for a car I haven't driven since May.

Jeremy Clarkson hated it.

Jeremy Clarkson is a dumbass who doesn't know a good car when he sees it. Has he even driven a Z06? He's an ignorant **** who doesn't like anything American...except the Viper and GT and even so he had to be stereotypical to the GT in the latest review, and even the director of TG was - what image does that give? Why does Clarkson buy a car which he is stereotypical towards? Must be to show off with! Clarkson is a crap journalist who should be shot.

The Z is an awesome car though, period.

26 K for an 11 second Cobra is crazy. That is such a steal if you think about it. I cannot believe you cannot get more than 26 K for a 03 Cobra. How much mile do you have on that thing!

I suggest (if you have not already) put it on a Mustang Cobra board. I am sure there are people that are willing to pay more than 26K for an 11-second Cobra.

Not everyone will like that much power though; it must be a gas- guzzler. If you, well, have a heavy foot ;).

How do you afford these cars at 19? I have a feeling I'll be riding my bike for the rest of my life if I dont bring my grades up some. I agree with your choice between a supra, viper and z06 though, good choice... have fun with it :) (I still say get black, I bet you will wash it every other day for the first month :sly: :) after that your allowed to be lazy and let it get dirty, but only because a dirty z06 isnt slower then a clean one.... Or, since your lazy (as I am too) You could get white and never wash it, and eventuially you would get kind of a flat gray color...

I thought your dad bought the Cobra? Have you seen the lights on the Moroso C5? Those lights don't look too bad. http://www.morosoracing.com/photo_gallery.asp Scroll down aways. ;)

He did, but he didn't.:odd: He's been in Germany for 3 months, and when he called one day I asked him if he still wanted to buy the Cobra because he used to ask me nearly everyday f I'd sell it to him. He said yes, and agreed to pay me for it when he returned home from Germany, and in the mean time he would be taking over the payments. Recently I started thinking how ****ty that was of me to basically use my Dad like that just so I could get a different car. Even though he said he'd buy it, and I knew he really likes it, I knew deep down he didn't really want it. He was just doing it to make me happy. He felt uncomfortable with how fast it was - after he agreed to buy it he was asking me what could be done to slow it down some. Anyhow, I decided I'd rather find an actual buyer for the car even if that meant taking a bigger loss than I would have by selling it to my Dad.

And yes, I've seen those lights. They don't look too bad, but I wouldn't say they look too good either. They just look weird - probably because I'm so used to seeing pop-up's on Vettes.

I doubt he'll bail. I've told him every single detail about the car, he knows how young I am, he knows I'm the second owner, plus he's already given me a non-refundable deposit.

$26,000 is definately a great deal on a 460hp 11 second '03 Cobra. Especially one with 8,093.4 miles! I did put it on a Mustang site. Ryan is a member of the site, actually. What's funny is the people on the Mustang sites are not willing to pay as much for these cars as clueless people on eBay, and other places. The Mustang website people do their research, and know these cars have ****ty resale value. If I were to eBay it I could get around $28,000 for it, probably, but I just want out of it ASAP. Ryan seems to be the quickest way out.

If you look around Mustang sites you'll see most of these cars go for $25k-27k. $22-23k if you can find one with 30,000+ miles.

The only thing I spend my money on is my car(s). My parents foot the bill for everything else - school, food, clothes, soon-to-be downtown Charleston apartment, etc. When I first got the Cobra I made a measely $8/hr working 40/hr weeks. $440/month went to payment, and $126/month went to insurance(insured under my Dad's name for obvious reasons). That's $566/month, and I only made like $1,000-$1,100/month. Now I make nearly $23/hr, and paying for them isn't ****.

Still haven't decided on a color. Now I'm considering blue.:irked: Now I've just got to choose between blue, red, white, or yellow.

Out of the showroom, the Z07 won't cost much more than the Z06, from what I've heard... It's the best of both worlds, a Corvette spanking new for less than $60,000 and enough power to own the Viper 👍

I have an 03 Cobra right now, and have three friends with modified ZO6's at various levels: Yellow (exhaust mods and lowered), Black (383 Stroker/heads/cam/exhaust), and a Torch red (bolt ons and a Magnasun Supercharger).

Before I address your origional question, there are a few things I'd like to comment on. #1, you don't have a low 11sec cobra with 460rwhp. My dyno numbers are 450rwhp/470rwtq so I know how they run. #2, you won't get 500RWHP with exhaust and a 100shot on a ZO6, sorry. The Supercharged Torch red put down 385rwhp with exhaust and bolton's, then put down 445rwhp/399rwtq after the supercharger instalation.

All that aside, the car itself is a great performer. It's low weight allowed my friends to run closer to me with significantly less horsepower. Before my friend put on his supercharger, he was right at my rear bumper at the end of the track (him at 385rwhp and me at 450rwhp), although both of us were on street tires. The difference would have been greater with sticky tires.

The main problem I have with the Vette (which you may not have), is the cost. Not just the cost of the car, but the cost of modifications are rediculous. My friend spent $7000 to go from 350rwhp to 385rwhp, then spent another $8000 on the supercharger (and odd parts) to get him to 445rwhp. As you already know, 450rwhp on a cobra is made for under $1000, AND his torque is STILL 70rwtq less.

For me, I would miss the low end torque because my Cobra is my daily driver. I don't know what it would be for you. If you have lots of cash to blow, then you'll not be bothered by any of the costs. Or, if you don't have lots of money, but can be happy with the stock performance of the ZO6, then you will still be fine. I think the ZO6 is a great car, and I can't see you not having fun in it, but it will be a different animal than your Cobra. If you plan to race the ZO6 at a road course, you will definately enjoy the brakes and suspension. If not, you're not really ever going to be pushing the car close enough to the limits to notice the difference. I have been to several autocross events with my friend's ZO6, and my times were actually a tad faster.

Regardless of your choice, I can't see you being unhappy in any of th echoices you're are trying to decide on. It all depends on how you intend to use the vehicle. The Viper, for example, is said to be a horrible daily driver. I have another friend who sold his GTS for a Supra because he didn't enjoy wrestling it around. Good luck on your choice. :D

The low 11 second timeslip is debatable IMO. It all really depends on the driver. With 460hp, and ET Streets, a good driver should definitely be able to bust out low 11 second slips. From what I've seen most people run like 11.8's with 460 and on DR's, but most of those people can't drive worth a damn. Also, when I say low 11 I mean more like 11.3 11.4 - which I guess is up there towards mid 11's.

A bolt-on + 100 shot Z06 may not be exactly 500rwhp, but it'll be damn close. Crazy Z06( I believe is his name) on Z06Vette dyno'ed 494/565 with exhaust, and a TNT 100 shot on his '03 Z06. With exhaust only I believe he dyno'ed 367/364, or somewhere close.

I feel bad for your friend if he seriously spent $7,000 to go from 350hp to 385. Hell, MTI offers a 475-485hp heads/cam package for $8,495! I knew Z06 mods were expensive, but damn... $7,000 for 35hp? I'd rather have a set of HRE's, and a 50 shot, or something, and still have a few hundred left over. I'll definitely miss the cheapness of modifying the Terminator. It was ridiculous the gains you could get with such little money spent.

The Z06 will be my weekend toy. I'd drive it daily, but like the Cobra, I'd be afraid someone would **** with it if I left it parked anywhere. I may get back into autocrossing once I get it, but we'll see. I would really like to see just how well it handles on a road course after reading, and hearing, so much about them.

I know the Z06 will be completely different than the Cobra. And I'll definitely miss all of the low end grunt of the Cobra. That's one reason I chose a Z06 over the Supra - it's got low end torque, and the Supra doesn't. I'll miss the 490-ish ft/lb at 2,500 or so RPM's that the Cobra had, but with the gearing, and lightness, of the Z06 it shouldn't be too bad. I'm really looking foward to it.

I appreciate your opinions on the subject, Lethalchem.

Haha, I just first saw pictures of that yellow Z on CCW 505A's yesterday over at Z06Vette. I believe that picture is from the new owner if I recall correctly.

Those are all beautiful cars. Is that your SB '03 I spy in the background?:) Got any hp#'s for the stroker Z06?

Blue Z06!

Corvette Commemorative Edition Z06 in Le Mans Blue Metallic. Limited availability. Price as shown $56,685.*

Have you considered that?

Either way get the Blue.

For some reason I really dislike the commemorative edition Z. I guess it's the stripes I'm not a huge fan of. I'm also not a huge fan of the price tag. I've seen used one's on eBay for $60,000 which is absolutely in****insane.

As of now I'm stuck on Millenium Yellow with Mod red interior.

Yup, that's Mark's old car. We're all in a car club together down here. I hadn't heard from him in awhile, so had to go there to find a pic for ya. Now I know why he hasn't been around, since he sold it!

Yeah, that's my Cobra in the Magnasun pic. :sly:

As for the stroked one, he's on ZO6vette too (Thomas), just as the red one is (Joe). Last I heard, Thomas was having some tuning bugs to work out, so it has yet to lay down an accurate run as far as I know.

In regards to the cost my friend paid, I added in labor costs, parts, ect to try and give you a realistic idea of what this stuff will cost. We all know we can take the expected price of something, then tack on a good chunk to the end by the time all is said and done. :guilty:

I just read on the article at Autoweek the new C6 will be priced at $44,245, $52,245.

"The Z51 package, though, was the ticket for the track. Hill said the C6 with the Z51 package will get you "three-fourths of the way to Z06 performance levels." Indeed, of the three suspension choices it offered the quickest turn-in, most grip and best brakes. The ride was harsher, but in no way was it unbearable. The C6's run-flat tires are new, developed to cut road noise and improve the car's ride. Neal also took part in the taping of our television show, AutoWeek on Speed at GM's Milford, Michigan, road course and on rural Michigan roads. Frost heaves and other road imperfections are more frequent than in Virginia, yet the Z51-equipped car was perfectly acceptable here as well."
