Oh my gosh ... *wipes tear away*. I just finished ICO at 1:35 in the morning, and I must say that was the most emotional game I have ever played.

I don't really know how to describe it, which is why I suppose no one has given me a good enough description in order to purchase before now. Everyone just says, "Wow dude, yeah that's a good game." Sorry, but I don't make a $50 purchase on that line.

The game play is similar to Tomb Raider. However, there are no weapons other than a stick and a couple of swords. You have no health gauge and nothing can strike you and kill you. There are only two ways to lose the game ... fall from a very high place to solid ground, or allow Yorda to be captured.

Yorda is this girl you find early in the game. The two of you do not share a common language. But you find out that it will take the two of you working together to survive.

Where are you, what are you doing? Well, you've been imprissoned because you are a boy with horns. Pretty racist eh? And you find Yorda in a cage as well. And there are these mean black shadow creatures trying to take her away - but you don't let them. And a bond is created between our two characters. Yorda can not do all the tricks that ICO can, so as ICO you must create paths for Yorda so that she can come along with you. These are the puzzles, and the basis of the game. You encounter a LOT of puzzles while trying to escape from the island castle that you are imprissoned on. Very subtly Yorda becomes more trustworthy of ICO. She begins to be a bit more daring, and more intelligent in her actions. Initially she panics when the smokey shadow creatures come for her, but she learns that ICO is going to protect her. Oddly enough, I became attached to both of the characters in their struggle to survive.

The sounds in this game are really interesting. There isn't a whole lot of music, and the sound effects are pretty slim because there really isn't a whole lot going on. You can hear pebbles and dirt being kicked around, and when you beat something with a stick or sword it sounds like you're beating something with a stick or sword. When you fall, or Yorda falls, the characters make fairly accurate 'pain sounds' and body thumps. But they just kept the sound very simplified.

The Land: Oh my gosh! Yeah the game is old, and the textures could be a whole lot higher quality, but the game is still incredible. The design of the castle, the island, and the way the two interact is amazing. I found myself running along endless stone causeways, my mouth hanging open, as the camera angle would rotate around ICO and Yorda showing the landscape to me. Un-****ing-believable. I think the majority of us are familiar with Halo. You know that feeling you had the first time you saw the Warthogs driving around the island and the ocean stretched out on one side and the cliffs rose high above you on the other? Yeah, like that. I think I said it outloud - I'll say it again, un-****ing-believable.

I think the game was just about the right length. I could beat it in probably five or six sittings. My "saved game time" was right about six and a half hours, which I triple for actual 'sitting time'. So it was right about a 20 hour game, which is about right for that style of play. (Gran Turismo 3 is about a kajillion hour game, but definitely a different kind of game). I think they quote Halo as a 20 hour game on a standard difficulty.

Visuals:
According to release date - 9.5/10
According to today's standards - 7/10

Audio:
Environmental Sounds - 9.5/10
Music - 9/10

Story - 8/10

Player Captivation - 14.3/10 (I'm telling you, it's amazing.)

The boys at Penny-Arcade had good things to say as well --
2001 / 07 / 23
2001 / 09 / 28

And I think the strips are both funny, and accurate One and Two

Overall: 9.7 / 10 (I don't know if that actually computes, but I think this game is incredible.)

Excellent review, but I disagree with the graphics. The graphics in ICO, IMO, have yet to be beaten. Not even Halo or MGS2 can beat the graphics that are displayed in ICO.

Dude, when was the last time you took a look at it? It's really not all that great. I mean, it's pretty, but it's more the sureal environment that makes it seem to be so beautiful. The textures are ok, and the movements are pretty good - but I've definitely seen better.

I love Ico, it's one of my favorite games of all time. My take on the graphics is that, artistically speaking they are the pinnacle of what the industry has to offer. Technically speaking, there are lots of games that surpass it, but very few give you the same sense of awe when looking at it.

Exactly - it's sort of a low resolution approach, with the artistry pulling in the big money.

A comparison, sometimes black and white is more beautiful than color. It depends on what the subject is, and how you point your camera. The makers of Ico chose an excelent subject, and used their camera to a whole new level of expertise.

How odd - I just picked up this game. I had been thinking about a review, but I hadn't finished the game yet.

It is good, tho.

Another interesting perspective in the game can be found here. This was the review that convinced me to hunt down and buy the game. :)

Good review, i will have to go out and rent this one for a spin. :)

Like I said in the review, it's probably 20 hours of sitting at the TV playing the game. So if you get a 5 day renter, you should be able to get through it in a weekend - but you'll have little time for anything else.

3 days max in my town ;)

I'll go about 5 hours into it, then return it.

Oh dude, the best part is toward the end. The game only gets better as you go along.

If you're into a "quick fix" this isn't really your game. It's like a little story book that you're driving. How many people start a book with the intention of not finishing it? Or pop in a movie and expect to stop after about 30 minutes? This is a game you HAVE to finish, or you won't enjoy it.

Oh ok. So then i'll take it over three weekends then. Should be finished by then. :)

10 hrs per day is possible. Wake up at 6, eat, start at 7, go till 12. have lunch, then go back until 1-6PM. Same for the next day. :P

I couldn't imagine doing that on any game. You need mental breaks just to let your mind rest. Especially puzzle games - sometimes it helps to think about something else for a while and then come back to it fresh.

If you're planning on renting it to beat it, the time it takes you could probably buy it for that price. Then when you're done sell it to a used game store. You end up coming out ahead of what it would cost to rent, and you are garounteed a non-scratched disk and a manual.

Manual's come with a 10$ fee for rental, but the 10$ is returned when you return the game. I think that three weekends (about 24$) is way cheaper than the 100$ price tag though ;).

Oh, i was kind of joking about doing it in one weekend... more than two hours without an hour rest gives me headaches.

Well, keep in mind he's a Sydney boy. It's about a 2:1 conversion so he's looking at $60 AUD for a new Ico, which we pay $30 USD. But I'm sure he can find a used one or even some kind of a deal on it. I'm surprised Sony hasn't sent it to the "Greatest Hits" collection yet.

I don't think it sold well at all, and GH titles need to be big sellers.

That's a good point, Tom.

ICO 2 - could we be so lucky? There's all kinds of talk on the `Net about it, but no real information from Sony. I'm hoping real hard they release it with support for the network adaptor and the hard drive and have downloadable stories. I'd pay $10 or so for more adventures.

I just bought this game and its INCREDIBLE! It's so beautiful, challenging but not frustrating (IMO) and... well its just so cool. 9.967 out of 10

This has become a very hard game to find, i have not seen it new or second hand outside of ebay (and i have checked alot).

Every store i go to and ask them they regretfully tell me that they don't have it, then they go on for the next 10 minutes about what an awesome game it is.

Supposedly Sony are working on a sequel. *shrug* I'll believe it when I see it.

The game finally made it to "greatest hits" stature I believe. I bought mine for $30, though I'm pretty sure it was at Best Buy (large electronics shop) for $20. I was peeved because I thought they were done producing them a little over a year ago.

If it's about to go platinum in Aus someone tell me soon because im planning on spending up to $100 getting it on ebay.

limited release everywhere so worth every cent. The deepest and most captivating gaming experience I have had. I’m in love with Yorda.

Here is the official Sony page for "Wanda and the Colossus".
It's in japanese but you don't need to understand to appreciate the pictures. I didn't check if they have more than on ign.

BTW, the european cover for Ico was different from the US one it seems. It also featured a few bonus pictures printed on cardboard.
