I'd have done it too, if not for those meddling kids!

So, I'm 45 and I've always played video games since Pong. The youngest of my two sons is 15 and said to me on Sunday, let's race time trial ghosts (I put one on, he beats it, I beat him and so forth). He chooses El Capitan with the Dodge Viper Race Car and soft tyres (arcade time trial). I put a ghost on and he takes about 4 laps to beat it. I spend the next 30 laps trying to beat it but keep screwing up though it is obviously beatable.

He has to go out and asks for another go before he does. TWO LAPS AND HE BEATS IT AGAIN! It's a very good lap and I give up, but later decide to have another go.

42 laps later I beat it! I am happy.

Son comes home. "Did you beat it?"

"Yes," I reply smuggly.

He sits down and 3 laps later he beats it by about 3 seconds. :scared:

I am humiliated....again. :guilty:

Wow that is cool...that is a good Father son thing to do! keep it up...buy the kid the dfp(Driving force Pro)! or better yet get 2! Then you both can enjoy racing together....after reading your post....don't bet allowance on races...unless you want to give money to your son. 👍 :dopey:

Hehe, DFP and Playseat in place, dking. Dispite my post, it was great fun and is somthing we often do for a change, but he invaribably ends up with a time that I can't beat.

 I heard somewhere that kids (these days) have learned how to play console-based games from such an early age, the muscles in their hands, and neural pathways in their brains are actually different to 'grown-ups', making them biologically superior at computer games... that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!

The ghost race idea is a great one 👍 ... not least because 2-player races can get quite dirty.... my only advice is to find a circuit or two and a car or two that you really like, and practice like hell, and then pretend it was a spur of the moment selection... :sly: Good luck...

Can I be your son? I need the playseat :sly:

The lap time is 1.31.841 (arcade mode, no alterations apart from soft tyres), if anyone is interested. Dunno how good that is in the whole scheme of things

El Capitan (Normal) using the Dodge Viper Race Car (1,000,000 credits).

All son places used up I'm afraid, dking :) Besides, you'd only be another brat to kick my ass at GT4 ;)

He can humiliate me at Unreal Tournament 2004 (on LAN) too, so I can well believe it.

My dad annihilates me whenever we rally (which isn't often, I've had the game two days), usually on Grand Canyon. He's never played a game before beyond Solitaire, but I can't get anywhere near him on the GC. He used to rally for real in Clubman events, but since we're using the DualShock controllers (don't really want a DFP), that can't be a factor. I suspect he may have been playing it when I was at work over the weekend.

Mind you, I blitz him at road racing.

Do you race?

Hmmm, that's funny because my son has been having trouble with the medium and hard rallys while I have finished all the special condition races. I'll challenge him to a rally next time ;)

Well we do it in Arcade mode. I haven't had it long enough to A) unlock Amalfi, Chaminoix, Ice Arena or Cathedral I and B) get some decent cars.

But I know he'll want that old Mitsubishi Rally car driven by Andrew Cowan - he used to drive an identical car.

Talking of medling kids.Has anyone experienced their wife/partner letting their 5 year old let loose on GT4 whilst being at work. Thus finding on return that he has bought and modded about 20 cars leaving me with hardly any money left because of the auto-save thing.......Damn kids!

He he he, I race my uncle cause he thinks he's awesome. But, i always kick his ass. I reckon that the older people, who i am assuming are safe, responsible drivers, bring their driving skills to the track. I see it with my dad, he avoids the ripple strips. The key is to be ruthless, and even if you are trying to, u probably aren't. And you can always drive dirty, like on the grass. It helps.

Oh, I do all that, he just does it better. :indiff:

I could see where I could beat him, but it's getting it all together for that killer lap where I fall down  To begin with, I was better than him in the first half of the lap, and he was better in the second. Now he is better in the whole thing :guilty:

I'm not so sure that young people have better hand muscles. But perhaps my time practicing musical instruments has minimized this difference. However, I have noticed that it takes me a long time to make sense out of what is shown on the screen and learn the maps so I can react in virtual 3-D space. I tend to agree with the improved neural pathway theory. I imagine this leading to interesting careers in remote space contruction and exploration (learn to deal with lag, it may come in handy later).

At 43 I find that eye strain will limit my potential gaming skills. I just can't put in the hours needed to compete toe to toe with younger eyes. However, anytime I can apply strategy I can gain an advantage. I've been gaming so long with my 24 year old son that I have no new strategies to trick him with, and he no longer has the time to play video games 24 hours a day; stalemate. We prefer to team up and play online.

All you father and sons need to have a look at the WRS (see my signature) ... it's a weekly race series, very much like the "race the ghost" thing outlined above and there are already several father-and-son teams in there ... and, yes, the weekly rivalry between them is always fun to watch!!!

Glad to see that there are plenty of us oldies on here, I'm 48 myself, bought the game myself, so my lads have to ask me if they want to play it :)

     - Pesky kids...

This is the coolest thread - it's great to hear about father's and sons' playing together.
It goes to show that gaming definatly can be a family activity and that it's not just a kids sport after all eh... :)

How long do I have to wait till my son is going to be a competitor?

He does practice though (will turn 2 this month)

So, is there a father out there that is beaten by a really young kid?

My girlfriend started whoopin my times by a second or two till I learned manual. How embarrassing is that?! She rubbed it in my face hard too.

Thats cool, racing with your son. My dad thinks the PS turns people into zombies and my brother only likes football games AND all my friends are CRAP at GT4. Im sooo lonely, so lonely......... :(
and i dont have a girlfriend to race against. Im sooo lonely, so lonely......... :(

I don't have any kids yet (no time to try with GT4  ), but I am 38 and I am a teacher and I am the GT4 king of my high school (I think that might be sad in some way). First to get 100% and king of the school in A-Spec. My best friend (he's 37) plays all the time with his two sons. GT4- bridging the generation gap!

45 this year and I to bought it, so my oldest son (12) has to ask. He's not bad with the pad but he's toast with the wheel and n2 tyres :)

congrats on your son! 👍 I (turning 42 this summer) just had my first baby as well, my son was born 4 weeks ago tomorrow! :)
I hope he will become the same petrol head as his dad! But no pressure of course..
I think its great to see different generations having friendly competitions with each other. 👍 ......so gaming can be social, Mr. Psychoanalyst...... 💡

Same way here... sadly.

💡 Hey ive got an idea, lets start a club and all feel sorry for ourselves for not having a girl to have kids with and not having kids to race with. :(

I'm 34, and have a four year old son. (Well, he's four in two months. Around when his brother is due to be born actually.) He can't really handle racing games. He's played GT4 twice.

First time: 2 player race at Nurburgring. I drive off. He stays there doing donuts on the grid. Made for a fun replay:)

Second time: Smashing up a Toyota Prius at Suzuka East. I had done an economy run, and he wanted a go. So he kept driving across the gravel because he likes the noise. He also likes the screen shake when you crash:)

He ADORES the intro. He also loves the "failure song". AKA, Yello's "Oh Yeah". And the replays.:)

Luckily, for now, I am the GT king in my house:)

You should have mentioned something about adjusting his allowance depending on the outcome of the race. Him thinking about that might have dulled his urge to win.

^^LOL. I have no friends who like GT4... or friends period. ;) I blame Kazunori Yamauchi.
