IM - Full English or 'txt spk'?

What do you use in IMs?

I'll use full English as much as possible in emails, text messaging and IMs, it's just so much easier than having to decipher what's been said, simply because people are too lazy to type a few more letters, resulting in them portraying themselves in a bad way as I'm pretty sure the majority of people here who've spoken to people who use 'txt spk' find themselves placing them below that of people who type using full English, I know I do.
I do however use some abbreviations a lot, usually FTW/FTL but not LOL/ROFL etc. I also use emoticons in the form of =D/xD but this is simply in place of LOL/ROFL as I've steadily stopped using those over the past few years.

Full English. I always hated that "U" "R" "ROFL" "OMG"...it always bugged me for some reason
 
Full English although I do sometimes use txtspeak for comedic effect at times.
 
I pretty much use full english, punctation gets left off a bit though. I also type a lot of.................between my sentences, sorta breaks up my thoughts a bit. I use full english when texting also, unless I am trying to shorten my message to fit into one text message.

For IM's, I drop the capitals and periods. Other than that, I type like I would normally talk.

Basically the same here. I still use question marks, commas, and other other punctuation. And periods if I do have two sentences in one message.

I do ... here a lot on GTP and MSN, I just like it but I'm not sure why. It beats just bunching stuff together...
 
I use lazy grammar when I instant message. I get tripped up when typing with full grammar. Especially with the multiple people that I talk to at once. I don't benefit from typing perfectly in an instant message so why bother. Besides, most of the time I just make up for it by not misspelling a thing.

On another note. I absolutely hate when people type as if they were speaking ebonics. Since when d1d d1s Lo0k g0od?

Actually, it looks alright but is damn hard to read:ouch:. Typing that probably took longer than the rest of your post, it is such a pain just to type like a gangstah:yuck:.

To be honest it takes me longer to think then type all of the txt speak than to type in full English, so I find it totally pointless.

touch typing at 70 - 80wpm this is totally true.. I mean i dont use full capitals and periods but i type properly and spell as best i can at least..
 
For some inane reason, I selected that I mix in the poll, but in actual fact I don't, I insist on using full English. Perhaps because I rarely punctuate on IM. Incidentally I use perfect English to the best of my ability whilst text messaging.

Full english for me, I hate it when people I'm talking to use "txt" speak. It actually takes me a lot longer to figure out what they've actually said to me than normal writing.
 
Full english for me too, but for messaging I allow myself to drop the caps if I feel like it. And sometimes I also allow myself to be less pretentious and rigid about spelling, perhaps even slouching in my chair. Occasionally I'll message while slouching plus eating and/or scratching my butt, but I hardly ever incorporate nose scratching or cutting the cheese. Hey, you have to draw the line somewhere. lol

I know a different meaning for it to tell people pretty much to shut the hell up.

The saying is QFT = Quit 🤬 Talking. ;)

As to topic, on MSN I'm lazy as anything and will use the u, r, b, 2, 4 for ease of typing. Forums like this, it's a different story and use full english....or my unpolitically correct artistic interpretation of it. :p
 
Full English, always. And if you can't write full English to me, don't bother speaking to me, since it shows you can't really be bothered.
 
For me, there is no mixture of both. Or you use the full form, or it is all "txt spk". I don’t believe that there is anybody who "txt spk" every single word…or maybe I am wrong.

I personally use full English, by that I mean using capitals usually, and dropping the period. I know a handful of people who sometimes use the period too, but I find it kind of pointless personally.

Agreed with this, completely. Oddly enough when writing SMS's I always use the periods, perhaps I think of the messages more as letters while the instant messaging is likened to talking. Txt spk doesn't only look weird, it makes it pretty damn hard for a foreigner to read and thus I don't want to see it, so I won't bother others with it either.

Hm. What do you mean by "full English"? Do you mean always forming your sentences and thoughts without any slang, always being grammatically correct?

Because I think it's unnecessary when IMing. Everyone's manner of speaking changes when talking to a mate compared to maybe writing an essay - you use slang, you might phrase things differently, you might not say full and correct sentences.

You're just talking to them informally, and that's what IM basically is. I use "full English" here at GTP, though, because it's a bit more formal and less intimate than IM conversations. And it tends to led credibility to your posts.

I don't think that's quite the case. I mean I type pretty much how I speak - when I write something on here, it's not an essay, but essentially what would be coming out of my mouth. 'txt speak' is just needlessly missing out letters and words in order to be 'quicker'. It's not a different way of talking (as you say pretty much the same stuff eitherway), it's just a different way of communicating those words.

Same. Though in IM I drop capital letters. Text messages give you capitals automatically which is handy, so if anything my grammar is better in texts than it is when I use MSN or similar.

I fully despise text speak.
 
Full English. I used to not capitalize my words before I came upon forums a year and a half ago. Heck I don't even text because my parents raised me up without a cell phone.
 
On TV around a few weeks ago, they had a segment on 'txt spk'. A person was arguing with txt spk saying that "languages evolve over time, and txt spk will be the new, evolved language."

What does GTP think about this?

I think that the person arguing that hasn't ever had a linguistic class. Yes language evolves and adds new words, I mean who would have though blog, e-mail, even internet would be a household word 20 years ago. But text speak isn't going to take over. I mean I'm not going to send work e-mails by going "OMG u hve to c this awsome ring!!!11!"...errr however text speak goes.
