I think thats complete and utter nonsense. I will never switch over to talking like an idiot. I don't want to spend time deciphering what you just said to me.

Full English. Even in text messages I use full English unless I'm stuck for character space.

Full English, for 3 reasons...
  1. It takes longer to figure out how to abbreviate everything.
  2. My cell phone spells out the rest of the word after I type in 2 or 3 of its letters.
  3. Merry Christmas!

I almost never IM. I do text a lot via my cell, and I use full words 98% of the time.
Of course my latest phone has a thousand character text field and even I rarely need that much room to speak my mind.

There is no excuse for txt spk anywhere. Not even in txt mssgs. I always use full words or correct contractions of them as txt spk srsly annys me...

I generally omit capitalization and periods when IMing. This makes me look like a dummy when IMing with Sage, who always uses perfect grammar and punctuation.
Talking to Sage is intimidating. One mistake with your grammar or punctuation and it's over.

As indicated by these two, I use “full English”, although the one concession to speed that I make is that if I’m only sending one sentence/clause, I sometimes drop the period.

And with T9, there’s little reason to not use full English when texting.

Quoted for Truth.
I will admit to using IMHO, and BTW more often than I probably should, but ONLY here, NEVER when texting.
Though we do use "Marco?" as a shortcut for "where are you, and more importantly when will you be home?"

I also get a "Status?" text at approximately the same time every day.
It means, "How close are you to done? When will you be home? IF you don't answer in 10 minutes or less, I WILL text again in more detail, and you had better be alive, well and in a position to answer the damn question!"

So, Full words that serve as "abbreviations."

Full Spanish, of course. One thing I do is enter in a chat, and if someone says something like "tlk 2 u ltr" I anwser "Are you hungry? You ate like 6 vowels."

I use a mix. Usually I type full English but don't bother to capitalize the I's and other little things like that. This applies only to Facebook, I don't text or IM.

:-)

I instant message (and text) the same way I type here -- full english with a dash of internet slang or sarcastic use of txt spk (in texts with friends, I call my place of work the "R-K'd"). I avoid many internet acronyms like LMAO or ROTFL like the plague, but have picked up the usage of "lol" in every colloquial form of communication, including speech.
