Boss-Barracuda
well like the title says i'm getting a job but it's somewhat interesting how i got it.

My mom works like a dog at her job (She's pretty much doing secretary work), but because she doesn't have a college education, she doesn't get payed as much as some of the people who are doing half the work she is. Needless to say, this makes her a very valuable person to her boss.

Well the situation came up that her job would be moving from right next to my school, to a couple towns over. Since i cannot drive and the buses don't come anywhere near my house (I'm on a zoning waver), she has to pick me up and drop me off. The problem being that she gets out of work at 4:30, my school day ends at 2:30, and she wouldn't have the time to drive all the way to my school, bring me home, and go back to work like before.

My boss pondered what to do, because she couldn't lose my mom, and came up with the idea of letting me work as a student intern in the building where my mom used to work. I'll be getting minimum wage (it's better than nothing) and be working 2 hours a day, 3 hours on Wednesday (I get out of school early on Wednesdays).

What does a student intern do you ask, practically nothing. All i will have to do is simple useless tasks such as shredding documents, copying documents, filing, and bringing things to other people around the building. Another cool thing is that I won't have to go to my last class for the first half of the year because you can earn a credit by going to your job. Because of that, I will be doing nothi... I mean working 3 1/2 hours a day for half a year.

PS3 here i come :D

Haha that's not a good way to begin at all...open up a savings account and save up for a car, trust me. I'm so glad i did that instead of buying meaningless crap, like $500 video game consoles with $60 games.

What's the minimum wage in your state?

I live in the same state you do, but i don't know. last time i checked minimum wage was close to $6.50

I was going to put "1966 Barracuda here i come", but PS3 sounded better. I really should save up because classic cars, especially the under the radar barracudas (1966-1969), seem to be gaining in price by the month :indiff:

The most current minimum wage here is actually $6.67 right now. It'll be going up soon in increments, because i'm fairly sure that Congress passed another minimum wage law and raised it to $7 or $7-something.

Ugh, unless you have a garage or something i wouldn't do it. Florida weather sucks for classic cars, way too much humidity. Unless you live in the north or something. I have a '73 Beetle and at the moment no money i'm willing to throw at it, so it's pretty much rusting there although i take it around from time to time.

It's not as bad as having a classic in the real north. The salt kills everything.

If i do end up getting a classic, I will make sure that i will be able to park it in the garage. I live in central Florida (A little north of Orlando in Eustis) so the humidity isn't as bad as where you live.

I hear that. Well, good luck with the job mate. 👍

Sounds like my first job that I had the summer before my Junior year of High School. I worked as a Medical Records Technician under my Mom, doing similar tasks to you... Although we were scanning and sorting documents in an office that was going from paper to electronic files, which wasn't much fun. But, getting $7 an hour for my first job, pretty much getting paid to sit around and listen to music while I did my work wasn't too bad... And the money added up quick since I didn't make enough to have taxes taken out.

Too bad on the minimum wage in Florida though. Ours is moving up to (or already did) $7.50 in Michigan, which helps those folks out on the bottom. That cash is good to have, and I hope you spend it well. I know that didn't always do so, and although I did end up buying my first car with it (1993 Volkswagen Fox), I also spent a lot of it on videogames and other stuff...

Back on topic: Its always good to have a job, and I hope you like it. Save up your money, don't spend it unless you have to, and you'll have enough for a PS3 (or that Barracuda) in no time.

===

Quick note on the Barracuda: Although many cars do rust up here in the Great-White-North, many more folks here in the Mid-West prize their American cars, and more often than not you can find them for pretty cheap. A quick search of the Barracuda market here in Michigan turned up a prime example, A 1967 Coupe with a slant-six for less than $13K.

Oddly enough, there was Barracuda that I nearly bought at one time when I was looking for my first car, a '66 with the slant-six if I recall. At that time (2003) the old lady only wanted $2500 for it, but I didn't feel like driving to Detroit to see it. They are really cool old cars, and IMO, I nearly prefer them with the six over the eights just to have something "different."

Nice one Diablo', sounds like a neat solution to the travel issue, you'll get some valuable experience out of it and the cash will come in very handy too. Much like yourself and Brad, one of my first proper jobs was doing much the same thing - it wasn't very interesting, mostly 'menial' tasks, but the experience of earning real money and having real responsibilities was very valuable - even though I didn't really appreciate it at the time. But even these so-called menial tasks still need to be done well - I've made enough screw-ups in my time to know why that is! Good luck, and whenever you get bored, just think about the money ;)

Thanks everyone :D

I've been wanting to get a job since i was 13. I knew I couldn't get one, but i still wondered what I should do. Even this summer, I couldn't think of anything that I would want to do for a job, other than stacking shelves at Lowes or something similar.

This job is a great opportunity for me, and allows me to say that i've finally got a job. It should really help out when i want certain little things too, because my family has to borrow money from our home equity to pay the bills, and there is little to no money for just random things.

Congrats on a job, its a good experience. Though that paperwork office job will get very boring, very fast. Have an Mp3 player and ask if they mind if you use it.

On the matter of what to save the money for, most certainly a car. More so because it sounds like you are going to need one sooner than later with the current situation. Do NOT get a nice classic, etc., as your first car. Get a cheap POS that you can trash, roll, kick, bounce off shopping carts, etc. Its way better as a first car because you won't be freaking out if something happens to, let alone the cheap to drive/insure/operate element as well, which is a huge deal at a young age.

Car > PS3. Just think about it - stay at home and play PS3, or go take friends out, etc?

I thought about that, and you do bring up a good point. I'd rather not get a classic and run the risk of crashing it, but on the other hand, i'd like to be able to afford a classic before my mid-life crisis

If i did get a classic, it wouldn't exactly be in good shape though. I wouldn't care if it had a slant 6 and was missing a lot of the interior, I'd just be happy to have the running body. Other than a classic, I was thinking about trying to find a v6 camaro or fox body mustang because you can get those pretty cheap.

And I was thinking a Tercel, which was my first car. It was a blast - completely gutless, tiny wheels, etc. But it weighed under 2000 lbs and got 40 MPG, which was nice. And it had a short wheel base and I did well autocrossing it. Kinda miss the thing still, as my Corolla is too nice to rally etc, and my MR2 is too picky about road surfaces setup the way it is.

It's good to see you've got a job Diablo. I'm also the same age as you but I've yet to get one. A year or so back I maintained high hopes to be able to continue my work on a Viper GTS-R, but most of my work was done during the pre-season preparation and work eventually disappeared (God I loved working on it though, regardless of the low wage. Still, you're a lot more enthusiastic than I am currently about acquiring a job (despite everyone else at 15 currently holding one). I guess it's because I don't have the time (2-5hrs homework per night and the necessity to acquire perfect scores during my next two years) and I haven't ever incurred and problems with money (Mobile phone's I've learnt are a rather foolish purchase at my age) or need to every buy things.

Nonetheless, you and the other people in this thread do raise a good point about the importance and enjoyment of investing and saving up for a first car. And in my opinion, assuming you're a car enthusiast of all shapes and sizes, I would purchase a classic car. Not in perfect, immaculate, or pristine condition mind you, but one that is a 'restorable' example you can enjoy working away on in the next few years. Apart from their relative simplicity and heritage they also usually have financial advantages in the form of road-tax exemptions and affordable insurance and, if picked wisely, are appreciating assets.

wow congrats man! I cant get my job until i turn 16 -_-. I still have half a year left before that happens.

Save the money you've earned in a bank to earn interest and buy something with more meaning(a car, etc) unless you've wanted a ps3 for a realllly realllllly long time

Muhahahaha NJ's minimum wage is 7.15:dopey:

But seriously good job. I once had a job, I worked a Dairy Queen for 2 months and I made well over 1000 dollars. But I was fired becasue the boss was a ho. But I am only 16 and I have a many opportunities like working at friendly's.

I just started a vacation job today.
not really interesting though, i have to put little pieces of chicken on a stick( don't know how it's called in english, it's for the BBQ)
But it pays enough. €9/hour after tax deduction (sp?)
Hopefully there'll be work enough for at least 3 weeks, so that i can earn at least €1000.
And that money isn't going to be spend on a car, it will be spend on a new pc.

Congrats, I just got my first job today aswell! I'm a general machinist/tool and die maker. It's full time, 42hrs a week and I'm getting $11hr! (Not too shabby for first job!)To compare, minimun wage where I live is $8hr. Mazda RX-7 here I come!

Here in Cali it's $7.50 :p

After I get a job at Speedzone (go-kart track), I will get a crappy old Toyota thing. I want a classic, but you guys have got points... I'll tune it, and try to get a better car for special ish occasions.

I just got myself a job at EB Games (Electronics Boutique), which is the biggest gaming store in Australia. $20 an hour, up to 40 hours a week. I'm pretty happy. :sly:

They're very big on salesmanship, and are quite professional. Business shirt, tie, black trousers, leather shoes. Something you wouldn't expect from a gaming store, but it's very sales and, also, management-oriented, so it's going to be a nice step for me.

This, however, is my fourth or fifth job. I just wanted to put it somewhere in writing, though. :D

I've been working at a supermarket since April this year (it is my highest paying job, $370NZD/week after tax) and have so far managed to save $2,200 towards my second Skyline (now i'm undecided whether to aim for a GT-R now or just buy a non turbo GTS-25 and then save for the R).

PS3 is unfortunately still way too expensive here, so may not buy one until next year now. One place is selling them for $1,199 and another place for $1,399. Want to get a 360 too but the one i want is still $800.

So the car gets most of my money now, GTS-4 needs an engine rebuild soon and that'll be $2,000+.

I still need to win Lotto. :( :D

Wow, EB pays $20 an hour?! Over here, they're laid back though, no uniform code at all. I think starting position would be minimum wage aswell.

20 Australian dollars = 17.01 U.S. dollars

Only two currencies in the world are higher than the USD, the Euro and the British Pound.

Still, they also have way more taxes in Australia... way more.

I just found out today that my swimming instructor from my competitive swim team is willing to hire me when i get my life guarding license for 12 bucks an hour which is realllll good since Ontario's minimum wage is 7.50. Too bad i still gotta wait for another half a year before i actually try and get the license -_-. Oh and its a part time job. 2 hours on saturday and sunday =D.

Well, $20AU converts to around $18.08. Which I still damn good pay.
Maybe if you still live at home. Once you leave the cocoon, life gets expensive...fast. That's about what my last job paid. It was plenty to pay the bills and buy a new toy here and there, but it was far from the Fabulous Life (of course I wasn't living in the cheapest city in the country, either). It's all relative, I suppose. If I'd made that much in high-school (although it's rather challenging to work 40 hours/week while in school), I would have worn a monocle and lit my cigars with $100 bills. And then my parents would have kicked me out of the house for being a pretentious ass.
