I'm moaning. About the game? No. About the people.

It's gonna be a long post, and the last thing this place needs is a misery filled complaint thread. There's been hundreds of them and they never go well, but I'm to the point where I just have to have a good old moan. I am English after all, it's in our nature.

Is there such a thing as a good open lounge room online anymore? Are there such things as good people to race with any more that aren't hidden away in private lounges? Hardly. The only room I get any joy out of is the one McClarenDesign hosts, but unfortunately he's on for shorter amounts of time each passing week.

Sometimes I don't know why I persist in trying to find some decent racing in this game anymore. I want to play GT5, I want to have close competitive clean racing, but it's just seemingly impossible. Just tonight's example is one of, well, almost every single night.

I find it increasingly frustrating trying to find decent non-dirty shuffle, spec or below 500PP rooms that DO NOT have aids, Racing Softs or that absolutely God foresaken boost feature. To me, these added "features" have killed the online perspective of the game.

Eventually, I create my own rooms, stating that there will be no boost or aids of any form (including ABS at times), and/or that they are strictly clean. Often, I wait for half an hour with either situation occuring: Either no one joins at all, or less than 3 people will join and quit within 20 seconds of track time because no aids or Racing Softs are available, and they are simple incapable of keeping on the tarmac.

That is what happened to me tonight, only this time I waited for over an hour, with only one person showing up and quitting as soon as he realised that ABS was off. I gave up and joined a shuffle room that a friend of mine was in. The only aid available was ABS, so I was happy with that, albeit there were also only 3 other people. Regardless, after one race of me mostly cruising while the other people struggled, the host left. The new host instantly changed everything about the room - RS tires, unlimited PP, boost on strong and slipstream on strong. The amount of times people do this is incredibly disheartening, why do they destroy the only no aids shuffle room that's online? To top it off, the host started the race almost instantly, when he was the only driver on track. As expected, I insta-quitted.

After a 10 minute re-motivation, I followed my friend into another shuffle room which had some aids available, but I figured it would do. I waited as they finished their race on The Ring only to be instantly kicked out by the host with zero explanation.

So I go ahead and join yet another shuffle room, this time one with all the darn boost feature that everyone is so obsessed about having on, only to be instantly kicked by the host. This so far, has equalled to nearly 2 hours online with only one half arsed race managed.

On the other side, when I DO happen to find room with the restrictions I enjoy, everybody in the world believes they can outbrake you by divebombing and using you as a cushion around the corners. And this is in rooms titled "Clean or Kick". It doesn't matter if I compete in 12 races, starting from last place in all of them in an inferior car and STILL win every race by an embarrasing margine, everyone is determined they can outbrake you into every wretched corner.

Then there's the frustration of people spinning out in front of you and never ghosting (when penalties are on), giving you damage and a penalty. It almost always seems to happen to me rather than anybody else on the circuit.

The last complaint is the seemingly racist attitude the game has, as in, I wonder why I end up with cars up to 80pp less than what everyone else is given. It happens night after night. I once made a thread about this specifically, showing videos and images of my vehicle selection compared to everyone else in the room. It can be very annoying at times, but occasionally the only thing you can do is laugh about it. Here's a couple of examples, the first picture being of a race on Circuit De La Sarthe 2009 with no Chicanes at 500pp, the least punishing selection out of these few.

What does really annoy me though, are the people that boast "Wow, I beat Lewis Hamilton, he sucks" when they are in, for example a very recent race I had, a TVR Tuscan, while I was blessed with a Plymouth Superbird at Daytona Road Course. To add to my anger, this is also along with the all too common fact that the only reason that person won wass because they blocked me by swerving violently, saying it's a genuinely acceptable form of defending, and then proceeding to squash me into the wall if I managed to get side by side with them.

I'm fully aware that I look both elitest and like an arrogant cock, and I am in no way trying to insult people who use aids or enter aids assisted rooms. As I stated, I enjoy McClaren's room very much and it's a perfect challenge by running a tire grade or two lower than what's available. However, I guess the point I was trying to make is that non-aid rooms are seemingly non-existent, and the ones that are around, suck. If there are any people out there that enjoy spec, shuffle, low PP and kart racing with no aids, and can respect other drivers on track, please get in contact with me!

Does anybody else share my disappointment with the entire open lounge online aspect?

Thanks for the props. Sorry my schedule has been hectic.

Although it's rough, keep hosting, and befriend the decent racers you meet. I'm lucky that I found a great group that are willing to be humble and fun.

Also, try broadcasting on social media. Google+ has got me a fair amount of fun races, I can only imagine the others will too. Check #granturismo or #gt5.

Lastly, keep in mind that GT5 just dropped to $20... or quid.. This means more newer players. Be ready to teach, show patience to those willing to learn.

You could also try slowing down. I know your contract is up, but jesus, we can't even read your plates back here.

You could start by adding me, I never use any aids, no ABS, and SS tires usually the highest in my room. Most of the time my room is a no ABS practice room with CM tires up to 600pp. I race clean and fair, winning is second, fun is my priority. I'll send you FR.

Join the races hosted and organized by Watermelonpunch, she is a very nice, fair and dependable host. Here is a link to start with :

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=263457

I had great races so far with her as organizer, most of the racers who took part are clean and fair, no ramming, no silly attitude, just pure racing. Most of her race series are tuning prohibited with low pp cars that often neglected by most GTP racers. Some nice custom tracks and cool competition ideas too.

She often host low pp shuffle room as well. You could add her, join her group - MCRC and VCRC.

Cheers guys, I'll check those out!

I feel your pain my friend. I totally agree with everything you said about online racing. I quit going online way back in mid January for the very reasons, and more, that you have stated. I used to race NASCAR cars at Daytona and Indy mostly. Not bragging, but it got to the point that people were intentionally wrecking me just for the win. It was like I had a big damn target on my car. Tried other forms of racing and just ran into immature kids that didn't take racing seriously and would do anything to get the win. To me, it wasn't necessarily about the win, but the thrill of a good clean race. Impossible to find so I retired from online racing and just stick to time trial events and couldn't be happier. You may want to consider joining the WRS. I know alot of guys there and they are all good racers. Its really a great time and the people are really friendly. Nothing like any of the online drama you've been experiencing. Thats about the only alternative there is in my opinion. They have TT's and weekly races.

PLEASE, add me

ritabelu1020

I couldnt agree more. My router isn't the best, and the Internet cuts out a lot on my PS3, but if it doesn't, I'd love to have a clean hard realistic race with somebody who actually can drive without every assist on and Racing soft tires.

Thank you so much, I hope to see you on the track soon.

I'm afraid you're going to get that by having that at as user name, its a pretty big claim to make unless your real name is Lewis Hamilton and if it is I'd personally come up with somthing different.

I know 2 people called Michael Jackson and both where born before the "king of pop" but imagine calling your son that now :dopey: "enjoy the next ten years at school son :nervous: "

Every time I overtake somone I hear "dude that was sneaky" and dont even get me started on other games like Noobs On Duty.

It is a saddening reality my friend. This is never just the case for GT5, so many online communities have degenerated into this sort of rabble. Forza is much worse, while you can get into some sort of race in GT, Forza is complete devoid of a decent online community.

I just sold my Xbox, as the only game I'd play on it was Forza, and I got sick of the people on there who seem to have less of an understanding of racing than my grandmother.

I'm fully aware that I look both elitest and like an arrogant cock, .

No one's said that, Lewis; there's been nothing but sympathetic replies here. I would love to challenge you one-on-one -- matched cars, etc, etc, if only to battle, bugger the win - unfortunately I'm not online. Yet. Soon. PS3 in the dungeon, internet in the penthouse.
As McClaren says - look for like-minded people; that is what GTPlanet is for, and there are so many other ways to connect with the right crowd so that you could find the races, and racers, you can get the best of GT5 with.

Looking forward to whipping your ass one day ;)
Cheers,
Harry.

I feel your pain, hence I went out and got some decent friends. I have messed with the open lobbies in months.
It's a shame too, because it's so nice to race against strangers. Dare I say it becomes boring racing friends as it often produces nothing unexpected. You know their lines and the cars they frequent.

^ That's if the drifters show up, for once.

Lewis, while I'm never a fan of those ridiculous open lobbies, there are many better ways to enjoy GT5. Join a GTP Spec Series, or something.

There are plenty of options. GTMSA, WMA, Grand-Am (the next sanctioning body to form, I've heard,) geeky30, PURE & GTRRL all run great, organised series, if you can commit.

Open lobbies are for anyone & everyone. Most hosts only see 1/10th of the misconduct in their races; you can't kick or penalise anyone without seeing what happened. That's the simple flaw of Open Lobbies. Random people come, cause crashes, and brag about beating Lewis Hamilton, or that guy who beat an RX-7 in a Hyundai Accent. If you really want to have clean racing, you have to make it clean.

You don't want to know how many times a lap the average GT5 player spins in front of me, and swerves to block.

Man, do I feel your pain. Online now, is just a bunch of kids on Racing softs and all aids on.

If you feel like it, feel free to add me up. I'm a fairly experienced DS3 racer, on sports hard tires. :)

I thought I had bad luck in shuffle rooms :scared:

It's weird that the problem doesnt seem as prominent when you go on dirt tracks. Sure, the game might give one person a spec C STI and another person a 3000GT, but it's so much more balanced there it just doesnt seem like a problem. The Sirion shouldn't even be on the roster, what you have there is extraordinary bad luck.

People dislike no ABS rooms more so because the game keeps ABS 0 even after they leave rather than the fact they can't brake as they're used to. So if they do a full day of racing in a no ABS room, forget about a car they used in that room, then decide to use it later, they will be greeted with spinning out first corner.

It's weird that the problem doesnt seem as prominent when you go on dirt tracks.

This could be because dirt driving requires a specific skill & attracts rally enthusiasts who would naturally be more serious about racing...

Online rooms works like this: If there's only one or two people in the lobby, very few people wants to join. If there's 3-5 people then some might give it a try. If there's 6-10 people will generally join in a steady pace. If it's 11 or more everyone wants to get in there. And it's hard to find five people who wants to race without ABS at any given time, so getting past that 6 people barrier is gonna take a while. Once you're on the other side though it gets much easier.

When it's 1-5, people think: "This room is kind of empty. Hm, they're racing no ABS. Must be boring."
When it's 6-10, people think: "Hmm.... what's this? A no ABS lobby? Sounds interesting, I might give it a go."
When it's 11+, people think: "Wow! A no ABS lobby! This is so cool, I've been waiting for this for ever!"

The online lobbies are extremely hit and miss, and generally full of morons. I try to keep hold of a good group of people when I actually encounter them but they are very few and far between, especially when I run drafting rooms. The vocal guys are generally very immature in their attitudes and I can only apologise for the idiot you encountered with me the other day, but I think when you have a username such as yours there is always going to be someone who'll take things too far.
Unfortunately those guys are also good draft runners, else there would have been hell to pay.

Sometimes I host a public room with Clean Fair in the title, while also disabling all aids including ABS and comfort tires only. Most of the people who joined were surprised with no ABS, and comfort tires. Some leaves, some stay in and race, some just complain then asking this and that. Not everyone can play without aids or using comfort tires, guess I have to be patient :)

never had these problems
i used to host free lobby on regular bases, sport softs and no abs and ppl would join, when i join other rooms theyre usually clean, or dirty but i dont care since (and im serious) everyone in free lobby is extremly slow, like reallly slow. cant remember last time i got beat in free lounge, became boring so i stopped hosting.
wining nurb by 1+ minute over 2 laps gets dull after a while

now i only host for friends, very fast friends (likes of zoky_cro, shane_uk, privatejoker ghostdriver, gurdiell etc.) and races are great and extremly clean
shame im now short on time and i can rarely host, but if u want to have some gd racing add me

This is certainly nothing new. Why are you racing in open lobbies anyway? Obviously you're quite talented, looks like you would race in a league with others at your skill level. No shortage of groups and leagues listed on GTP. Good luck.

@ Lewis_Hamilton_
If you want to have a good online experience, it just takes some work.
As you can see by the replies to your post, there are people who like to race the same way you do. I would bet there are thousands of drivers out there that like to race that way also.

Those 60 golds (I assume you have) on your license tests, that took work.
24 hour endurance races, That’s work.
Getting 100 % of the trophies, and 100% game progress, that takes work.

Why would online be any easier?

I started hosting out of frustration. I, like you, couldn’t find a clean room/host that wanted to race with the room settings I liked. I paid 36,000cr for those tires, and by god I was going to use them.

In the early days it was slow going. I only had a hand full of friends and I was lucky if the room even half filled up. But I worked to build and maintain a friend list of good drivers. It took months, but now when I start a lobby and send out invitations it only takes a few minutes for the room to start to fill with good clean racers.

I always host open lobbies, I find private lounges to be a bit claustrophobic. I still work to maintain a large friend list. Deleting old friends I don’t see anymore and adding new clean drivers. You can’t find new friends in a private lounge.

I’m sure if you ask McClarenDesign, or any other good host, they will tell you they didn’t start with room full of great drivers. They had to work for it.

This is why I only go to free roam servers, I hate racing online in just about any racing game, because they're all just a bunch of reckless a-holes who would probably suck behind the wheel of a real car.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

One of the reasons I started this thread was because I never found this a problem before, it's only been for this year, and as time goes on, it's increasingly worse. Before, I used to be able to find a good number of rooms with the settings I liked and they would normally be filled with decent and clean drivers. I also used to host my own rooms a lot, and it never took more than 5 minutes for my rooms to fill up to capacity.

My guess is that most of the core drivers have moved on to bigger and better things, whether that be regarding games or their personal life. What seems to be left is a far larger ratio of casual gamers who don't seperate GT from any other arcade racer. Most of the people I used to race with have left, and the ones that do still play GT5 hang around in rooms that very rarely appeal to me. Obviously the number of people online in this game has reduced significantly, that's only natural, but I never thought no aid, no boost, no RS rooms would die out completely.

My main appeal are shuffle rooms and spec rooms, follwed by low PP restrictions and karts. The PP level that appeals to me is mostly 350-450 and plenty of these rooms used to exist, now it's pretty much just 500-550pp at the Nurb, the Nurb, and only the Nurb, with RS's of course, and it's been this way for months. I myself don't see what there is to appreciate about this very popular combo, it feels like playing Wipeout. There's nothing wrong with Wipeout, but when I'm on GT5, I want to play GT5 if that makes any sense. I do wish PD left out some of these simulation destroying options - I know why they put them in, but it has become far too dominant in the open lounge scene.

The reason I prefer looking in the open lounge rather than organised events is due to what someone said earlier in this thread (XXI), it's nice to race against strangers. Like Forest Gump said, "you never know what you're gonna get". You could come across (and I have) some very decent racers and have some great battles, it's more satisfying knowing you are beating a much larger amount of people, and people are a lot less predictable than friends and event racers, as again like what was mentioned earlier, you get used to driving with the same people and know they're every move. I like have it mixed up with different people, it keeps things more exciting in my opinion.

My Niche is Recomended (or other completely stock) car racing.. That way it is all driver and no setup BS..
Karts, also all driver.
As well as Shuffle.
Anything type of racing that is all driver is my kind of race.

Exactly, that's what I enjoy most as well, being rewarded for your driving in a totally equal race. Shuffle obviously is a bit biased sometimes, but at least there's usually 2 or 3 other people with the same car as yourself. On occasion, I do enjoy some PP racing though, but again this is potentially damaged when it's the same 3 cars being used by everyone due to their dominance at certain PP levels. A little tweaking from PD could fix this up nicely (as could removing the GTR from the 500 shuffle base roster, and knocking the muscle cars down one notch on the shuffle base settings).

I think the bigger problem here is that you are not actually Lewis Hamilton. :sly:

Couldn't tell from racing him.

Try to keep up with him. I dare ya.
