Get a pick up truck. I mean me civic is nice and all but I think its time for a change. I want either an S-10 or a Dakota. I also like the Blazer Xtreme. Can I have your thoughts on this.

I don't really haul to much. But I want a change. I've had 2 cars now its time for a truck/suv. I'm tired of the same thing.

:rotfl:

Holdens aren't exactly popular here in America - maybe it's the extra cost in importing it.

Streetracer780: Hmmm...trucks are totally unsafe and personally I find two-door SUVs to be a total waste of money. Let me tell you about the features of the Toyota Matrix...;)

you don't want a pickup truck, a geo metro has more useable interior room than a chevy silverado extended cab. besides the seating position in trucks sucks.

Don't get an S-10.:yuck: You'd be going from a slow car, to an even slower truck.:nervous:

Get a Dodge Dakota R/T or older lightning.

Oooh, a Dakota R/T. Grunt to the max! Speaking of max, how about the Mitsubishi Mighty Max!? I remember in the early eighties that was the 'worst vehicle for sale in America' for like four years running.

Why don't you pick up a girl truck for under 5grand, then drop in a 350 and put rims on it? All new for around $10grand (that includes the truck)

If you can't do it, make friends with those who can :D I would help you, but of course I live up in Canada....

Or get a dakota, and drop in a 5.9 😈

Streetracer - I've almost always had exclusively trucks.

I've got a '97 Ranger right now. I'm back shopping for another truck and can't decide on going with the (much cheaper) Dakota R/T or drop the 40k on an SVT Lightning.

The R/T doesn't have nearly the same amount of speed/power, but it's still a BIG V8 that does have a beautiful rumble to it.

If you were thinking about an S-10, wait a year and the new one is coming out. This one using the same styling as the current Chevy Trailblazer and stuff.

Don't bother with the X-treme 'cause a) they have yet to put a decent engine in it and b) they've stuck on a million and 1 little plastic bits and taken away all the truck-ness of it.

But then again, you will likely just jam on some low profile tires, lower it all the way down and have to drive 5 mins out of your way on the way home to avoid manhole covers in the street.

j/k man. :)

That has to be the biggest freaking myth in automotive history. SUVs are compromise vehicles that try to do everything and end up doing nothing well at all.

My 10-year-old Dodge Caravan holds more, handles better, and rides better than any "Sport Utility", while giving at least 50-100% better fuel economy. Plus it costs next to nothing to maintain or insure, and it will last at least another 10 years since I only drive it when I need to haul a lot of stuff or people.

For the purchase price + operating costs of any popular SUV, you can buy a used minivan or pickup/cap that will actually be useful when you need "utility", PLUS you can buy a nice new daily driver that's actually comfortable and fun to drive.

And if you're talking about one of the luxury "utes" (an even sillier concept, if that's possible), you can buy a nice daily driver, a used pickup truck/van/ tow vehicle, and a used racecar/trailer to go autocrossing or do track days with.

1) I agree with the comments about being spoiled - UNLESS you've worked to earn most of the money yourself. I don't know the situation so I withold final judgement. But if you've been flexing mom & dad's checkbook, I suggest you try doing it on your own for a while. It's much more satisfying.

But if you're interested in a truck, I recommend a Dakota. DO NOT get the R/T. Even though it comes with the 360, it's only available with an automatic. A 318-powered Dakota Sport with a 5 speed, shortest final drive, and LSD will hand the R/T its butt on a platter.

hand the R/T its butt on a platter

True enough, the R/T certainly does not have great performance numbers.

What it does have is an image. It is a "muscle car" at heart... It has a big rumbly (that's a word I'm trying to get added to the dictionary ) V8, huge rubber (275's I believe?), sitting a little lower...

<shrug> It ain't always about speed. Part of it is also the image. Hell, look at how many Civics are out cruisin' around with a coffee-can sized muffler.... I don't think that's improving their performance any but it gives the look they want.

But, to each their own I s'pose. While the Dakota with the 4.7 litre has the R/T beat in a straight line, I'm not sure how well it'd do in the twisties (not that ANY truck short of a Lightning does all that well) but narrow, taller rubber on a raised suspension sure ain't gonna help you out on that one.

:D

Well, all that can be cured for about a thousand extra bucks (on the Dak Sport).

If you're actually considering spending $40 large on a Lightning, wait a bit and get the Ram SRT-10. With the aluminum version of the V-10 in it, a six-speed trans, and serious attention paid to handling, it's going to embarass the Lighting in a big way.

You can make fun things when the Viper is in your factory parts bin...

I haven't seen a whole lot of a write up on the SRT-10. If you stumble across a link, do me a favor and post it.

Hmm... I wonder if we should be in the Automotive forum discussing this?

Now, truth be told, I do really really like the style of the Ram, maybe even as much as the F150, the one thing I've never been cool with is the gas mileage on those. (Specifically the 5.9). I saw it rated as one of the worst gas-guzzlers among "common" cars on the road.

Geez, just when I thought I had narrowed my shopping down to 2 vehicles. Bah!

Yes I suppose we should be in the automotive forum - plus, we hijacked Streetracer's thread, to boot.

500 hp. 500 ft/lbs of torque. 5,000 lbs. 0-60 in 5 seconds, with a 1/4 mile ET under 13 seconds at over 100 mph.

Sounds good? Add 0.92g on the skidpad...

Sure it will. But ethanol was talking about spending $40k on an F-150 Lightning, and the SRT-10 Ram will dunk over it with ease.

FWIW, I don't like trucks much either.

Ok, that was just really lazy of me. A quick Google search turned up a ton of responses.

:D

Thanks for hunting it down as well...

I do feel bad about the thread hijacking - But, I'm bad for that. I get distracted too easily and get off on one tangent or another

Well yes My two cars have been a 1982 Celica POS and my Civic.

I'm liking the Dakota but the S-10 is easy to drop for not a lot of money. I've never seen a slammed Dakota.

I would never buy a Matrix!!!!!

I don't like the new ram but the older ones are nice.

I like the Blazer Xtreme just cause its already got ground effects on it and it pretty low. They aren't that bad. My cousin drives one and he loves it. He can go like 130 in it but he took the chip out.

Trucks are all easy to drop for no money. I can get you some links, or just go buy a copy of sport truck at a magazine shop. Don't let your mom see it. While it dosn't have full nudity, the bikinis contained therein, don't leave much to the imagination.:D

I disagree. Our dodge Durnago hauls anything we throw at it. We have used it hauling people, dogs (the main reason we got it) fencing lumber, rocks cement EVERYTHING! And when it is unloaded the 5.9 and parttime 4wd can destroy any civic that decides it wants to race you :)
