Is the impreza any good. I am looking for a regular impreza, mainly the second generations. I am leaning on this, but i am also considering a mazda 3. The deciding factor is if the impreza can take regular fuel. Does it?

Why would the deciding factor be regular fuel? The tanks are probably what, 15 gallons? That's a $3.00 difference when filling it up completely.

But the difference between the price of premium fuel and regular fuel is negligible in the grand scheme of everything you have to pay for with a car.

The 2011 Impreza 2.5 has a 16.9 gallon, so if it did burn premium it would cost $3.38 more to fill it up, so instead of paying $54 to fill it up when it was completely empty it would be $57. With a combined mpg of 23mpg you could drive go 388 miles on one tank.

The Mazda3 has a 15.9 gallon tank and gets 24mpg combined, so if it did burn premium it would cost $3.18 more to fille it up, so instead of paying $51 it would be $54. With a combined mpg of 24mpg you could drive 381.6 miles on one tank.

Assuming you drive 12,000 miles per year like the average American, the Subaru would require 31 fill ups. That's $1,674 on regular and $1,764 on premium, a grand total of $90 more per year to run 93 over 87. Looking at the Mazda, you'd need 31 fill ups as well. That's $1,581 for regular and $1,674 for premium, a difference of $93.

That's $90 over the course of a year, which is nothing when you factor in what maintenance costs on a car per year. Basically you are kvetshing over nothing when it comes to premium vs. regular. Just buy the car you like better and skip out on buying two pops, three bags of chips, three candy bars, or a magazine every week and you'll easily make up for the fuel difference.

With that said, I'd buy the Mazda3, it's probably a better car.

Generally speaking, you can.

It's just not particularly good for those tuned for 91/3 octane and should be avoided absolutely whenever possible.

I would generally come to the same conclusion. In terms of modern small cars, the Mazda 3 is arguably the pinnacle of at least the past generation or so. The car was screwed together rather tightly, the suspension was sorted out wonderfully, and the MZR was a sweetheart of an engine. As a bonus, the fuel economy as I recall was a fair bit better, and even if you do spring for the smaller 2.0L, it is still a properly good engine.

Compared to any Impreza, I'd rather have the 3i with the 2.0L. Compare a 3s to the Subaru, and you'd have to be a pillock to make that choice.

I personally would say that Impreza =/= STi, but yes. I'd have the Mazda instead of looking like a yob with little taste or understanding of automobiles.

Uggh why do people always buy Impreza's in sliver? That's all I can find, I want one in blue or black.

What size of trunk would an Impreza have? Would i be able to fit a 40x20x20 inch soft hockey bag in it?

Your hockey bag is a little over 9cu/ft. It should fit, but you might have to have it at an angle or something.

I'd probably have to take the leg pads out (see my avatar for an example) and put them in the back seat I guess.

Ha we only see blue ones over here, complete with the gold wheels, bonnet hump and valve blow-off. Can hear one coming, yep its a scooby!

If the seats are 60/40 you could probably leave the 40 side down all the time. I have a hard time believing your stuff wouldn't fit in the trunk though...

Hockey bags are pretty massive, especially if he's a goal tender as his avatar suggests. In a sedan I'd think it'd be difficult to squeeze a bag in there. A wagon would probably take it okay though.

You have no idea how many times I've tried to explain this point to people. I drive a GTP. I run premium. They flip out and consider my car, "too expensive" to own. They're lack of automotive maintenance causes them to loose more money than the difference in regular and premium. Ignorance. lul

I'm around hockey all the time. I think the only hard part would be getting it through the opening, but technically there's enough room. But even with a hatchback like a Focus he'd have to fold the seats down, but it would be easier to get it in there. (Focus' are whores! :sly: )

Don't premium grade fuels give better mileage by a noticeable amount over the lower grades?

The engine gives the best performance on whatever fuel it was tuned for.

Eric.

Well, according to the owner's manual for my turbo 135i, it says you can use 87 octane fuel in the car, however I don't choose to. I'd rather use 93.

As for the Impreza, I had an '06 and loved it. So much fun in the winter time (especially compared to my 135i). But to me it wasn't powerful enough, and the interior is very simple, so I went with the Bimmer. However, the aftermarket isn't too fond of the engine for the Impreza, they don't bother with it because they would rather tune the WRX or STi. But it can share many of the other parts with the WRX and STi.

Oh yeah, parts sharing will be important because I plan on tuning it.

Well keep in mind, the non-turbo Impreza has a different engine than the WRX and STi. The Impreza engine can be turbocharged, but cannot handle much boost. Most of the engine parts are CANNOT be shared between the Impreza and it's turbo siblings. However, suspension setup is damn near identical (at least they were on the 02-07 generations). Almost all of the cosmetic pieces are swappable.

Pretty sure you can get a supercharger for the 2.5. There is plenty of support for the Impreza unless you're looking to add a bit of b00st.
