In-car view

Back in 2002, when I was still playing GT2, I used chase 2 view. I tried to use the in-car view but it always screwed me up so I stopped.

But when I got GT3 the default setting was in-car, so I went with it, and am still going with it. In fact, chase view is hard to take anymore. And I have a theory as to why...

In GT2 you have two guages, both in the lower right. In GT3 they are centered and the same size. The symetry of the view is the trick. Everything is balanced and the middle of the car is simple to see... right between the guages. GT2 was lop-sided and confusing, counter-intuitive. But GT3's is a breeze.

Whad'ya think? Which view did you use, do you use, and do you think my theory holds any water?

P.S. Some people apparently have pretty strong feelings about this as this quote from a GT2 thread shows:

Tell me, when you drive a real car, do you also get out of the fu..ing car and drive it while standing 5 feet behind????
This is a wuss forum!

In PS1 days I used to use chase, because the cars look good and I liked to see them, but I kinda grew out of that and I use the inside view now...that guy in the quote is a bit of a tosser though, people can use what view they like.

That person would probably have a fit about anything he disagreed with. Just seems like that type.
I always use the in-car view whenever available. The only exception to that is Monster Truck Madness (which we play at work over the network) because A) the constant bobbing makes me motion sick, and B) the programming is so poor that you always hit stuff that is miles off-camera.

That being said, I wish GT3's POV was a little more realistic and varied by car. I wouldn't need custom interiors for every car, but I'd like to see a suggestion of the windshield frame and hood of the car you're driving.

I use in car view as well. I love games that show you the hood and stuff. Its a great feeling to be actully in the car and feel/see the bodyroll and to have a dirty winshield. Gt3's view is like under the front bumper, but it works. Hopefully GT4 will have more in car view detail.

Being able to see car details from inside would be ideal, even better than two superimposed, although centered, guages.

I'm probably the only one who likes the out of car view.
The in car view is good and I could probably get used to it if I put in the time.
The reason I prefer the outside view is simply that I can see how the car is reacting to my input. Are the tires smoking? Back off the brakes. Am I leaning to the outside of the turn? Back off the gas a bit. I also feel it gives me a little more time to react to what the car is doing.

That's why I used to use it, too. But for some reason in-car seems more intuitive now. I can interpret the movement better and it feels more natural. But In GT2 it was impossible for me. I even went back and tested it and I still have to use chase view there.

P.S. GT2's graphics totally suck when you get used to GT3. It's really hard to look at.

Why not a camera view from the roof? You know like you see on TV coverage of the camera right above the windscreen.

One reason why I switched from out car view was because in GT2 you had an extra one that zoomed out even more and you could see more of the track. In gt3 they only have a close up and it is sometimes hard to see things (especially if your trying to see over the wing of the ESCUDO)...

Same as you MileFile. I always used chase view in GT1 and GT2 because it was the only way I good see the car sliding around.

In GT3 I use in-car view. maybe it's the better graphics resolution, or maybe some new algorithm somewhere, but I can tell what the car is doing without actually seeing the car now.

Yeah thats why I use in car view. If they had a second view behind the car it would be much easier. I also find that I can do better times with in car view and if it wasnt for the two gauges in the middle, I would probally be using the out of car view. Hopefully in GT4 they will have a fuel gauge as well as the true interior.

i usually use in-car, since it's more realistic and i find it easier to drive. however, i will use the case view if i'm whipping a race and just want to watch the car or do something stupid.

I used to use "third person" view as I call it..but I grew out of that, since I want it to feel more realistic ya know,so I switched to "first person" and it helps make the gameplay a whole lot better ya know

You're not alone . Some races I use the in-car view , cuz sometimes the back of the car us wayyyy high . You can't see tha road . About the ESCUDO , I gotta agree .

I think the in-car view is more informative than the chase cam view. It may just be me but I always found that that moment between car turning and screen turning on the chase cam was way too vague, it's much easier to place and control the car from in-car.
I do like to watch the shafts of light bouncing of the bodywork around deepforest though, we need an in car camera that shows at least the bonnet (or HOOD as you Yanks call it) of the car.

I agree...the chase view never works for me cuz when you try to turn, the screen doesnt move at all, but the car kinda shifts its direction. I always use in-car view for racing games...its just more realistic. as for checking to see if the tires are smokin and stuff like that, its fairly easy to tell if your cars understeering or oversteering just by the "feel" of it...plus you can always use the rear view to check if you're smoking the tires too much.

I use both In-view and Chase-view. I use in-view when i am serious about winning, but if not I use the chase. Why? Because I get some eyecandy too. Very nice if you are drifting.

I use the in-car view I think, its not the birds-eye one... so it must be in-car because with chase view, you can see teh drift, so you countersteer.. to much!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. Chase view causes me to oversteer and over correct and pretty much over-do everything.

I have noticed that when your in an f1 car using the first person you will actually hear the wind on your helmet.

Ive also noticed that the height of the in car view changes based on the car your using.

Has anyone noticed this stuff? If not go check it out.

yep in car view is what i use.
Same reasons as most of u, external view is to close etc..

I try occassionally with external view but it usually ends with me over-countering some oversteer and facing in the wrong direction :D
