Hi there I was recently speaking to a friend I have'nt seen in a while and he told me that his white, 1994 R33 GTS turbo type M manual is for sale at £4,000 with 30,000 miles on the clock, full service history and completely un-modified except for CAT1 alarm/tracker. It would be a nice toy for the summer so Im considering if to buy it or not but I have very little knowlede regarding Skyline's. I was just curious is there any common problems that the R33's have that I should know about? and also is there any tricks to getting more performance out of these or will I have to pour big money into it for more power? Any help you guys could give me would be appreciated.
Cheers

£4000 sounds like a great price for that, seeing how low the mileage is and with the service history. I don't know much about the car, but fellow forum user VIPERGTSR01 should know what to look for seeing as he owns a simmilar car. Also I don't think it's too difficult to get decent power gains with some small mods.

Thinking about it, I would have bought that like a shot if I was able to afford the insurance for it.

£4000, 30,000miles? Bargain! I wouldn't hesitate.

There isn't many common problems with them except they were tuned by factory for Japanese fuel so taking it to a tuner for a check up of of any detonation is not a bad idea. They can have other small problems like idle hunting or stalling problems due to dirty MAF or AIC, but thats rare, easy fixed and with only 30k on the clock highly doubtful.

Some rust spots can form near the boot/trunk seals where water should drain out but if water had been sitting due to parking the car downwards on sloped driveway can cause spots to form. I have also heard of possible rust spots on the seal panel where people add aftermarket sideskirts which when not properly fitted cause water to get trapped. When checking it out be aware that factory standard R33's have non-gloss paint in the engine bay and under trunk carpets, if they are gloss this is a great indicator that the car has been damaged and/or repainted, and check all seams for standard factory looking sealant to be sure it hasnt been someones accident.

As for performance they do respond very well to mild modifications like full exhaust, cold air intake, intercooler, increase boost and make pretty much as much power as you want with further mods.

But as for tricks, removing the standard electronic two stage boost controller will increase boost to still a safe 10psi and will allow the boost to come on much earlier, but always make sure the engine is not detonating/pinging with further mods, if so get it tuned. A guy on Skylines Australia forum managed to get his GTS25t running 12's down the 1/4 mile with only minor modifications (standard internals, standard turbo, street tyres)

Also if you have a bad batch of fuel the computer may automatically retard the ignition timing to some degree, it will not advance the timing back once you get better fuel so a periodic computer reset often helps performance.

If the engine is tuned properly they engines are very safe (many driving around here with 550hp on standard internals) and the standard drivetrain is extremely strong capable of a safe 700hp.

I highly doubt you would be dissapointed with it, you should have great fun.

BTW if you give me the VIN number of the Skyline I can check it up in the Nissan Database which will inform you of its standard features, exact build date, colour etc.

Yeah thats one thing thats worth doing, with the JDM turbo MR2's they reprogram the ecu to work with uk petrol. Well mainly just shell optimax because it's the closest thing to the fuel they get in japan.

I'm just wondering if the car might be a uk spec model, oh wait no it's a 1994 year car and Nissan pretty much started selling them here in like 98.

Wern't only GTR's sold in the UK officially?

I used to see non GTR 34 chassis cars in a nissan dealership showroom a few years ago. I dunno I kinda assumed that maybe they did the same for the R33, unless they were imported by nissan themselves or something.

I know Nissan also sold a limited number of R33 GTR's in the UK, not too long before they offered R34 GTR.

Being a skyline enthusiast, i know alot bout them. Skylines are well built car, not alot of problems with them. With that kinda miles, of coarse its a bargin, but being a series 1. No doubt it'll be a import, not one sold in UK offically.
The engine is extremly reliable, knowing a persons who had one for 4 years, they never had a problem, only mildly modified.
Best place to start mods, is exhasut, airfilter and boost controller/bleed valve.

Larger front mount intercooler would be a good idea before the bleed valve, but keep it 10psi or below with the stock one IC should be fine.

Even when a Larger front mount intercooler is installed its best to keep the boost under 1bar (14.7psi) due to the factory turbo ceramic exhaust wheel. Rebuild the turbo with steel wheel and boost away. :)

(Remember first sign of pre-ignition/detonation take it to the tuner to get rid of it)

Thanks for all the help and info guys, i really appreciate it 👍 Im going to look at it sometime this weekend so I'll let you know how I get on. My mate is in a bit of a rush to sell it so hopefuly if I can knock him down in price a bit I can put the savings into making it look like this....

Holy crap, are those actual nismo/rays (I think) wheels? Because i've heard that they cost a bucketload.

Also Grrr it's a fake GT-R, if you get it get rid of the GT-R logo. It always annoys me when people try and make their car look like something it's not, especially when it's already a damn nice car anyway.

The guy a few blocks away from me owns a R34 GT-S and he's also rebadged it with GT-R bits.

The picture he posted is what he wants it to look like, not the actual car.

The car pictured is a GT-R so removing the badge would be silly :D

Jay you should know by now that I don't read other peoples posts, I just like to look at pretty pictures. :dopey:

Aren't those Nismo wheels expensive though?

Yeah, very expensive and rare.

Thats a GTR, no way its a GTS, look at the front quater panels, but sitcks out, as well as the rear guard, and the nismo rims are proberly 18 by 10s inch nismo didnt design rims likt those for GTS, and look at the seats, their stock gtr seats!!!!!
Its ethier got somthing really wrong with the car to be worth that much, or the the thats not the right picture. Show us some more pics, and include a pik of the engine to confirm that its a GTS, as i speculate.
