Nothing bigger than the iPhone will feature the retina display for the foreseeable future (at least for another 5 odd years) because as people in the know have already calculated it is not currently possible to have a consumer device with a screen that size running that resolution.

I would put down a serious amount of money to bet that Apple will get 2x iPad displays before 2013. Here’s an article describing how Moore’s law has historically correlated with actual display technologies, and considering the jump in GPU power they made from iPad 1 to iPad 2 I don’t think that’s an insurmountable barrier. Also consider that they’ve hinted that they’ve just thrown billions of dollars at some technology that they expect will pay off in the future.

Anyway, I’m gonna pick up an iPad 2. I’ve realized now that I have a full-time job and I’m not in school anymore, my home computer gets very little actual work stuff done – it’s 99% an internet and TV machine. It works great for TV, but I’d rather do internet stuff on an iPad (especially since I’m an RSS junkie – I’m practically drooling at the prospect of using Flipboard and Reeder on an iPad).

Flipboard is a slick piece of kit. It's easily the best way of getting quick access to all your RSS social needs. 👍
 
I think the Ipad1 users will buy an Ipad 2 just because it is an Ipad and is the new must have.

I rather have a HP Slate, as it has Windows 7 on it and i can put anything on it that has good touch support.

Very much incorrect, not all iPad 1 users will buy a new iPad 2. I have an iPad 1 and use it as my main source of media and net consumption, I won't be buying an iPad 2 as I'm not foolish, from reports like Walt Mossberg and Engadget they all agree on one thing, if you own an iPad already unless you want mediocre camera facilities and a bit of a speed increase or the original iPad is too heavy then you might as well stay away as the iPad 2 isn't for you.

I will grant you though there are Apple geeks and fanboys out there that will buy the latest offering Apple dish out because it's Apple. :ouch: But most sane tech guys will wait for either two or more iterations of an Apple product before taking the inevitable upgrade plunge. But whitewashing all Apple fans and or Gadget fans with the same brush is a bit unfair.

Im getting one too.

I like Android as well, but nothing compares to iOS to how smooth it runs, never any hiccups or glitches as far as I know off. And the web browsing scrolling zooming smoothness is a big SOLD for me. Heck, my 3rd Gen Ipod touch runs way smoother over my brothers Google Nexus ONE phone. So I do not know why people say Andoroid is far far more superior. I really do not care for open system, All I need is a great web browser, youtube, mail, pics, videos and music. iPad 2 here I come!

No. I have an iPad 1, and I know others with an iPad 1, and none of us are considering getting an iPad 2.

With all the apps available on the iOS App Store, for most things out there, either one will be equally capable. Sure, having full Win7 on a tablet will give you a bit more flexibility, but for most people out there, it will only come down to the user interface, and less the programs that can be run on it.

I personally was expecting a more substantial change with the iPad2, and in the end, I just end up shrugging it off. The price is one of the stronger points for the iPad, I believe, as well as the strength of their Marketplace in terms of applications. However, it does not detract from the fact that I feel like iOS is broken and heavy-handed when compared to Android 3.0 or WebOS3, or the other general stigmas that one has to deal with when it comes to Apple products.

I'll likely be buying a Xoom or TouchPad over the iPad2. It has more to do with technology preferences and having products that are willing to take chances. With Apple, I'm not getting that.
 
The only issue with the Xoom is the iPad2 apparently has much better bench mark figures. I'm still waiting for all this tablet crap to settle out, as Apple isn't going to innovate crap now that they have a product, so I'll leave up to others. Quite curious to see a WebOS device and what RIM is working on.

Really depends on what you need to do, I'd say. I'd generally take my EVO 4G over an iPad any day of the week, since it has had flash for ages and so on. Touch screens aren't exactly conducive to typing.

True, but typing on a touch screen works well enough for web browsing. You won't be typing up an essay or anything, but then I'd also hate typing an essay on a netbook's tiny screen.

To me, the appeal of a tablet device like the iPad is that it's essentially a thin, lightweight PC perfect for enjoying media on. I don't think anyone buys a tablet for serious productivity needs, unless they're brain damaged.

I'm interested on joining the Apple bandwagon with one of these. :p My Dad has one and it appeals to me, so just wondering if anyone has tried a new one to see if it's noticably lighter or more practical to take around with you compared to the old one. Otherwise I may just buy the old one off him. :)

Or I could just try one out in a store sometime. 3-4 week waiting list now though!
 
They have a WAP issue as well it seems just like the previous gen iPad and just like both my iphones.

It seems to be the trend with Apple and also to some extent every manufacturer in the world these days that the first batch are so rushed through production that they have many faults and poor workmanship. I remember people complaining about glue leaking out of the iPhone 4 screens as well as the much remembered aerial faults. The original iPad had overheating issues and now they have fixed that there are other problems! I very rarely buy anything at launch these days because of this.

Yeah I guess I'm taking a risk with the new iPad 2 whether it has any issues, but where did you hear there was overheating issues? My Dad bought one from launch and he said it's never even got hot, let alone overheat.

I'm hoping that because I have a HTC Desire that I can turn it into a WiFi hotspot and the iPad is turned, effectively, into a 3G iPad. I don't know if anyone knows if this will work? Major plus point for me if it does.

That's probably because there is no sun here in the UK :sly:, these were people using them outdoors in topical countries like on the beach in direct sunlight and after 15 mins or so an overheat warning would pop up and the device would shut down. Remember the front is black and glass so it only acts to amplify the heat like a greenhouse.

Just make sure you check your iPad 2 thoroughly at the store and particularly check for light leaking around the edge of the screen.

Welll, ^that happened to me when I was using it outdoors in California in the summer. Did you say they fixed that overheating problem, or is it just something I will have to deal with?
 
I have ordered a white one so it shouldn't be much of an issue. Even if it was tropical here in the UK. :p

I'm getting a black one and will probaly use it in the sun a bit. I'll probaly take it on holiday but will mainly use it out of the sun or in the evenings. Definately not using it by the pool, I've got a 2G touch for my basic app and WiFi usage out in the sun.

I agree. My dad recently invested into a touch screen computer, can't remember the specs, then he said he wanted to go buy an iPad. I told him to just sit the computer on his lap and plug it into the wall. It would offer him the accessibility of a computer and the portability of an iPad.
 
I've had my iPad 2 since day one and no technical issues. And yes I'm posting from it right now - my poor laptop has been relegated to just being a media server.

Same here, I've had mine since launch day and not had a single problem, I haven't even switched it off yet either, I just use the Smart Cover to put it to 'sleep'.
 
A small question for the more geared up than I am, the wife has been on at me for years to get her a laptop, but I can’t see her sitting with a laptop for more than 5 minutes.

Come the ipad II my son has the ipad, on seeing the ipad II wife says shell I have one of them instead, so my question is I know there are many sizes 16gb up to how ever many.

Am I right in saying apart from 3G they all do the same thing, as in all functions work pictures, video, Wi-Fi, GPS, and so on depending on what apps you have installed.

As she is not a big lover of the internet maybe an hour per week at best, I can’t see the need for 3G, all the other functions she may well get some use out of.

If you could help an aging out codger out with a nice clear reply yes this will work with this app, no this option will not work, even with the app I would appreciate it.

Had ours (the iPad 2 WiFi) since May and had not a single problem except for some turning sensor glitch. Very happy with it in fact but whenever I'm getting a tablet for myself, I'd probably get something else that enables you to transfer data through Bluetooth and ability to run Java applications.
 
Phillip, the difference between WiFi and 3G versions is not just the 3G. WiFi version also has no GPS. Other than that: identical.

But as long as the iPad is in a wi-fi zone then there is still 'location sevices', just not as precise as GPS.

As much as I would like to, but the iPad is shared with my dad so I don't think he would like it to be jailbreaked. My uncle has done it, but he's had some sort of problems which I believe might be from a faulty jailbreak process...

I'd rather keep it original though, less problems once I have some issues with it. Still, as I said I'm very happy with it 👍
